known dS Greenlight.
And unless GreenlJght is chal-
lenged and overturned m court.
1t wtll be unpossible to blame
developers for bypassing Newl I
port Beach and looking to build
elsewhere -perhaps in Costa
Mesa.
After all, Greenlight chal-
lenges developers with the
daunting task of convmcing vot-
ers to top by the polls in a spe-
dal election to vote for a con-
struction project. Unless that pro-
ject offers residents peaaJ
incenbves, there's little reason to
bother voting. But if you're
strongly against something -
uch as a large project that will
add some cars to your alteady-
busy commute -you may be a
bit more adamant about voting
-and voting no.
The Koll expansion would
have been in practically the best
location for a large project in
Newport Beach -on the out·
skirts of the city near the airport
and away from the majority of
residents. And that leads to a
logical conclusion: U a project
can't win a Greenlight vote
there, what reason tS there to
think that voters would O K
development in the heart of the
city or along the water?
Just as they dJd last year
w hen they approved qreenlight,
Newport Beach voters have spo-
ken loudly and dearly. They
don't want large developments.
They don't want more traffic.
The community wants Green-
light and it's now time that
everyone, developers most of all.

Clearly, in its histoncal con-

should an individual's right to fly

Ultimately, this was a case of

The Confederate flag, so laden

Campbell looking
out for El Morro
llus 1S Ul response to the N ov.
6 article on the proposal by Rep.
John Compbell to do a set-aside
on the funds obtained from El
Morro to refurbish Crystal Cove
(·Plans for cove restoration
defended•). I don't mean to beat
a dead horse or throw my sour
grapes all over the pages of thJs
newspaper. I lived ot the cove for
J 1 years, pa.id $35,000 for my
house m 1970, and when I was
evicted, all I got wos the eviction
notice, not a cent.
Anyway. there's a great deol
of misunderstanding about the
cove end how we got ln there,
and forget that -scratch that.
My point is this. that on four sep-
arate occestons, Campbell
refused to meet wttb two other
representatives from the cove
and myself to hear our sugges·
lion that they take the ball a mil-
lion or so that we all contributed
in annual net, proliVrent. and do
a set-aside on that to refurbish
our cottages and open them up
to tbe public when the state was
ready to do It.
Well, Campbell reftised to

ruce senior held rep, and it
sounded like I was tallung to
someone from the Parks and
Recreation with the propaganda
line they were putll.Jlg up that
this ls to open the cove up to th
public.
Well. take a look ot the cove
now. Rangers and m&nt«>nance
people are going to occupy my
house and my neighbors' house .
The public access there IS worse
than it was when we wer there.
The very ldea of extending El
Morro's lease makes me want to
throw up. That's the most beauti-
ful spot on the coast, and 1t
offers the ees!est end more loqi-
cal cost-iillectJve way to move
out the tr41.lers and put in modu-
lar housing and open space for
the public.

budget problems, they're not
going to be ln there for a long

"We've tried to make It like
a little village.• Millett said.
•We have a toy store. we have
Grandma's house, we have a
Victorian mansion, we have
Edward's Cinema, we have a
church. we have a barn, we
have Pelican Hill Golf Course.
we have a quill shop ... It's
sort of a dreoml4nd."
Bonnie Brooling, store
manager of Sur La Thble in
Corona del Mar, says this is
tbe yellr ot the gingerbread.
·we sell about 15 ready-
made houses a week.· she
sakl. •I think a lot Of times
things go (away) year after
year, but there's really a resur-
gence of gingerbread. This
year it's 411 the talk.•
Millett says gingerbread
dough retains Its tradition
because even the smell ol it
tcreaml Chnsfmu,
• 1 gues it more European
because the Getman arid
Swiss all UM ginger,• he $4kl.
"It's all sort of the winter spice.
The Christmas spices. And it's
all in one dough •
And the art of ma.king gin·
gerbread houses is. Millett
prwes, infinitely variable ..
Bllt if you're making a sbn·
ple gingerbread house witbout
an elaborate Vlllage sprawling
beside It, start with paper
cutouts of how you want your
house to 'k>ok. Millet said.
Then roll your gingerbread
into sheets, bake it and let lt
cool. Use a paper stencil to
carve out your cutout shape
from the coo.led dough. .
To assemble the house,
Millet said to use royal Icing,
which ls a mixtwe of egg
whites, powdered ugar and
lemon juice. The icing will
harden and act like glue to
form the strength QC the house
as you meld the ed9es of
walls.
