YEAR IN REVIEW The memorable and not so memorable 2000 • EDn'OR'S NOTE: Once again, a year is coming to a close. It has been a year of blg news, some of it good, some of it not so good. The last 12 months have brought us the pas.sage of the Greenlight Initiative, a murder convic- tion against Steven Allen Abrams, the opening of the Farm Sports Complex and a silver medal for Newport Harbor High student Aaron Piersol. The Daily Pilot invites you to look back on 2000 as we begin a four-day package reflecting on the year that was. and look- ing forward to 2001. CATCHING AIR T hey are the stories that cause laughter or a raised eyebrow in the newsroom -and hopefully arotµid the breakfast table. They are the ones that get passed around, the must-reads for no other reason than to sat- isfy curiosity. To amuse you once again, the Daily Pilot presents the annual rundown of the shame- ful, the wretched, the strange, the funny and the very funny -the moments that are worth a second glance and the head- lines that gave you double takes. Dullious DISTINCTIONS IMlln It was a confusing time for the California Department of nans- pol"tation. Somehow, at some point, a sign identifying the Costa Mesa Freeway was taken down for some reason or another. In its place, workers put up a sign that read "Newport Freeway• -defi- nitely not what the freeway is named, as many Costa Mesa resi- dents would be quick to say. When the issue was brought to the attention of Caltrans, there was a bit of bureaucracy and con- fusion. But, to the credit of the state agency, a new, correct sign appeared a few-days later. Cloudy weather obscured a much-anticipated total lunar eclipse. Students in Orange Coas.t College's Astronomy Department had geared up for the moon's dis- appearing act by throwing a par- ty. They brought out several 28- pound telescopes for stargazers to use, but all they saw was a patch of orangy douds. Mark David Allen, at right, made local history and was crowned Newport Beach's all-time leader in arrests. Since 1985, Allen has amassed an astonishing number of public intoxication SEE DUBIOUS PAGE A6 SEAA HlllR I o.Al.Y fl.OT Blake Thorin, 13, takes fllght on his blcycle Tuesday afternoon at Fa.lrview Park in Costa Mesa. Their three daughters had come to their parents' home in Newport Beach from the far comers of the nation for the oecuion. But the golden wedding annivenuy didn't take place last night. Instead. the extended Wayne family and dozens of cl068 friends -including my wife and me -attended a very different kind of celebration Tuesday: the .. celebration of a rich and full and much too short life. Ellis Wayne suffered a fatal heart attack on the tennis court three days before Christmas. Ellis would have approved of his memorial. His home was packed to overllowing, the trib- utes were brief and eloquent, and it was all presided over by Rabbi Leonard Beerman, who had mar- ried E1Us and Vlviane SO years ago and drove down from Los Angeles to offer wisdom and comfort to all of us who mourned his sudden passing. The trlbutes to him from sever- al friends and the members of his immediate family were wonder- fully honest, which is possible only at an occasion such as this, when the speakers are not only comfortable with but truly Jove the person being eulogized. Ellli would have been amused and pleased by that. Newport Beach officials are urgmg residents to brace for the possibility of further growth. Newport Beach Councilman Gary Proctor, a 17-year airport commission- er who won a council seat m November, said the latest round of flight data is another reIDJDder to the city of the need to fight for llight restnc- tions now set to expire in 2005. And I sighed and theught, "Oh well" -and then sud- denly and wonderfully, the rabbi stood Ecclesiastes on its head by reading a poem called •A Man Doesn't Have Tune• by lsraeli poet Yehu- da Arruchai. It began: A man doesn't have tirn to have time for everything. He doesn't have seasons enough to have a season for every purpose. Ecclesiastes was wrong about t.Oat. And then as the rnbbi read the rest of this poem. it seemed as if our good and dear fnend who lived life so fully and so weU was telling us that life doesn't fall into the tidy patterns set forth by Ecclesiastes. Times overlap and gel confused and lre· quently tum out to be inade- quate. And so do seasons. So in view of this, he seemed to be saying, it would be wise and fruitful for those of us who seek both quality and quantity in life to start making the very best use we can of the time in which we are living. And not to worry about having a season for every purpose. Opt for a bit of indul- gence, especially in the form of something rich and lus- cious -chocolate. Cb0colate, once thought to be bad for one's health, now }\as redeeming benefits -in moderation, of course. Chocolate is also the central ingredient in director Lasse Hallstrom's most recent fable, ·chocolat. • Nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of France sits a mythical cobblestoned village. As in a fairy tale, the village appears timeless, unaffected by developments of the mod- em world. The puritanical lives of its residents are about to be uprooted when a myste- rious stranger and her daugh- ter anive to open a chocolate shop: a weighty temptation during LenL Adding the unusual ingre- dient of chili powder to her chocolates and possessing an intrinsic ability to revitalize others, Vianne (Juliette Binoche) entices imagina- tions, mends relationships • and spirits, ewes ailments, and even awakens passion in stale marriages. Viewed as a noncon- formist, Vianne poses a threat, especially to Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), the pompous sell-appointed mayor, who endeavors to run her out of his austere town- ship. Battling immorality boy- cotts, Vumne befriends her cranky land.lady, played by Judi Dench, and rescues an abused wife played by Lena Olin. It's not, until Roux, a gypsy "river rat" played by Johnny Depp, enters Vianne's life (an hour into the movie) that she recog- nizes the changes she must make for her own growth. Adapted from Joanne Har- ris' novel by Robert Nelson Jacobs, "Chocolat" is a light- hearted comedy with many hwnorous, laugh-out-loud vignettes, but unfortunately it's missing a few ingredients NEWPORT STONE & DESIGN CENTRE COMPLETE DESIGNER SHOWROOM ... toliUY ef!9ance IA ma-<k !Vfl""'al>le. ......... __ _ -•....WU.--· -·-.g,. .. .,.. ......... ,,, ........ ,....c..4oa •llodooolc .. ~·c:-..,. •ll_</..,,., --c..,. . ..._ .......... . _____ .......... ...._ to be a sat- isfying. winning recipe. It may curb the appetite- and•defi- nitely cre- ate crav- ings for Sees or Julie lowrOOC8 ·Godiva- but it's not a complete meal. Hallstrom typically embraces people in all their follles and strengths as seen in •My Ufe as a Dog,• •What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "The Cider House Rules.· In "Chocolat, • his embrace is fleeting, attribut- ing to the characters' lack of depth. A minor aspect or two is revealed when they are superficially introduced. And then we're rushed into the next scene. · The audience, although fond of the characters, doesn't experience a strong attach- ment and fails to embrace them. By using once-upon-a- time narration, we expect fantasy and not reality. When Vianne and her daughter arrive in bright red, hooded cloaks, a sharp contrast against the village's gray- hued backdrop, we expect them to create pandemoni- wn and not to conform. "Chocolat, • when accept- ed as a fairy tale, imparts the belief that it won't be believ- able, and in tum that thin characterizations should be accepted. However, we need rich, evolving characters who we can believe in. We anticipate that the ending will be hap- py, but we'd enjoy reveling in it just the same. Despite enjoying parts of "Cbocolat," it left me crav- ing. Not for seconds, but to sample something different. The previews to "Crouch- ing Tiger, Hidden Drdgon. were enticing. Dim sum, anyone? Oi:~ge Coast College long has been known as one of the most ambitious colle· ' giate drama programs in the nation, witb upward of 30 plays produced each year on the college's three stages. This year, Vanguard Univer- sity -formerly known as Southern California College -began to make its pres- ence felt as well. For sheer logistics, OCC was the dom- inant force, mounting some highly entertaining, involv- ing and enlightening pro- jects. But, while Vanguard staged only three shows, all were solid productions. At the top of the OCC heap was "1776," the musi- cal version of the founding of our country, splendidly directed by Alex Golson. A large and energetic ensem- ble cast skillfully negotiated the balance between bJ.s. torlcs and hyaterlca. Director John Perzacca, who's been a part of the OCC program for the past three decades, was respon- sible for the college's sec- ond-and third-ranked . shows of the year -Steve Martin's "Picasso at the Lapin Agile• and Paula Vogel's "The Mineola 'IWlns." The show crackled with zany wit and easily earned the runner-up spot on the OCC roster for the year.
