leuly jump over fences. slide
through closmg doors Md hunt
down the bad guys.
But now, the Belgian
Malinois, who has spent 10
years of his life p.s an employee
of the Costa Mesa Police
Department. has a bad back
and sore feet
Nero ll. as the department
calls turn. ii ready to retire. says his handler, Det. Paul Dondero.
He succeeded the first Nero and
has been followed by younger
caru.ne Nero DI.
·Nero II ls 13 years old."
Dondero said. ·He has 91ven so
many yeMS of great service to
our department. Now he needs
to re1a.x in his twilight years.·
Nero came to Costci Mesa
from a breeder m Holland 10
years ago. He wa.s trying to pass
tests to gel mto Costa Me a's
canine team with three other
dogs. Dondero recalled '
•All the dogs that tested
were good dogs that were
trained for police work.· he said.
"But there was somethlng about
this dog. Something specull.
There was th.Ls spark between
us from the get-go.·

At that time. it was not
Dondero's dedslon to lielect his
dog, but he was ecstatic when
his supervisors picked his
choice. •
Nero has severol special
qualities. Dondero said.
•He just loves people o.nd
craves attention,• be said. "But.
when it's time to go to work.
he's all business.•

manded him to catch a bad guy
hidJng in the bushes, Nero did
It without hesitation. But when Dondero took him to elementary

Dondero was in the canine
unit slx years. He woa later
moved to the narcotia wlit u a
detective. Nero moved with
him. He went Crom catching
crooks to m1ffing and finding
drugs.
To \his day. Nero hu helped
recover more than S2 m11llon in
drug money, two tons of marl·
Juana, two tons of cocaine and
large quantities of heroin and
metbampbetamine.
ln his heyday, Nero was a
mercile11 canine who was
always reedy to work and never
gave up till bis master's orders
were carrted out. He got hurt a
few times -moments that
would leave Dondero'• heart
pounding with anxiety.

gate and a post as a car burglar
on t 9th Street tried to flee. But
the d09 slid through the gate
and grtpped the bad guy with
his mouth. Dondero said

teeth and had to undergo root
canal treatment and pot o few
stitches on his head, he said,
"But he was OK. He wo
tough."
Now th.at he Is ready to retire.
