It goes lo £how the difficulty in maJcirtg decisions
In the dally budget meetmg It was predeter-

but the opUon.s for visuals weren't overflowing. We
was decided to run ii as the main art, even though about pictures sight unseen. -Sean HUI.,

mugs. They display their col-

which are engraved with
names and dates, on a small
tree on the dining room table.
They tie the mugs to the

satin ribbons. The effect is
charming.
I have a collection of ster-

When I was in high school my
mom started gtvmg me one
ornament every year

a wtule, I started collecbng on
my own. I love the older ones
that have developed a patina.
I think of them like people,

That year we played Fall

I display the shoes on the

a lot of color to the room and
are definitely a conversation

"Jerry Green put on a show ... " .
12 Sunday,. Dec:embw 16, 2001
One play
one shot,
one chance
Big shots are the di.ff erence
in UC Irvine's near-miss
on the Bruins' floor.
M aybe: just maybe ... UC
Irvine's Jerry Green could
have done things different
when he bad the ball and the
Anteaters were trailing by a point
with less than 30 seconds left during
a nonconlerence men's basketball
game against UCLA at Pauley
Pavilion Saturday.
Maybe, just maybe ...
He could have passed the ball to a
ready and waiting St.anislav Zuzak.
Maybe, just maybe ...
Green was being just a tad selfish.
Or WdS he? ·
·Jerry Is not a selfish player.• UCI
Cooch Pat Douglass said. "But he
tnes to carry the team on bis bade. I
hke a k.id that doesn't disappear
when tt's on the line. He wants the
Amara Aguilar
COWGES
last shot and if
anything he tried
too hard, but he
made some key
buckets for the
whole game.·
Green dribbled
the ball as the
precious seconds
on the clock tidced
away with UCl
trailing, 75-74.
The moment
had finally come.
The clutch
moment that
allows star players
to shine. It was what Green bad been
wa.iting for. Seconds seemed like an
etemJty as UCJ's priJe and joy took
the final shot of the game over two
UCLA players reaching for the sky.
The Dall went wide of the basket
and just like that it was over for UCI.
One play. one shot, one chance.
One player's spUt-second choice.
Was it the right one?
'J • tt would have been ruce if that
last shot had gone down,· Douglass
!>aJd. ·u we are going to have the ball
with three seconds to go and Jerry
has a chance to4wtn it on a roll. I'll
take that any day.·
"T'he issue here lsn't that Green
.1 didn't make the shot, it's that he
wanted the ball. Why shouldn't he?
He had already scored a game-high
27 pomts. However, Zuzak was also
on a hot scortng streak against
UCLA and a case could be made that
maybe Green should have passed the
ball.
Could've? Would've? Should've?
Zuzak. a 6-foot-10 sophomore
forward, did score a career-high 22
points tn the game.
Maybe, Just maybe he would have
made the flnal shot to win the game
for the Anteaters. He was certainly
capable. not to mention open.
Green. a seruor as well as last
year's Big West Player of the Year,
trusted his i.n.stinct.s and be can't be
blamed for that. He had confidence in
his game. Zuza.k had no regrets on
how the last play unraveled.
"(Green) took a shot.• Zuzak said.
"It was all right. I think it was a shot
he can m11ke. He took a shot be
takes. so I think that was all right.•
Zuzak was open. but said he dJdn't

Rkhard Dunn
OMY Pit.OT
LOS ANGELES -Sophomore forward
Stanislav Zuzak was open for a three-pointer as
the UC Irvine men's basketball team w.orked for
the last shot to stun UCLA and win Saturday on
the hallowed Ooor at Pauley Pavilion.
An upset victory here over the 17th-ranked
Bruins and It's a deflnlng moment for UCI
Coach Pat Douglass in his five yeatS wtlh the
Anteaters. AM1111 , 7•
And, in senior All-American point guard UCLA 75
Jerry Green. wbo entered the week as the
nation's filth-leading scorer. the 'Eaters had
the ball in the right bands.
Then. at the buzzer, It was one of Green's patented hots -a
runner -bul it didn't fall and UCLA escaped with a 75-74 non-
conlerence win before 7,379 fans.
·we bad a great chance to beat UCLA at UCLA,· Zuzak
said. ·eut I think it was a really great game. We hould've won
that game ... we lost a big chance.•
Green's shot missed everything except po ibly graung the
backboard on its way out or bounds as time expired and UCLA
Coach Steve Lavin breathed a heavy --------
sign of relief. UCLA avoided another "We had a
upset (1t lost to Pepperdlne on Nov. 28).
"It would have been nlce-U that last
shot had gone down.• said Oougla s.
whose team (5-4). which opens 819 West
Conference play next week, led most of
the second half. including Wlth 1 :25 left.
•Jerry Green did display his talents
and I thought he played a great floor
game. a much better floor game than he
has been playing and still, at the same
time, was able to score (a game-high 27
points) .•
Thanks to 6-foot-11 center Dan
Gadzuric's last-minute contributions on
offense and defense, the Br\UnS beat UCI
for the second year in a row (last year the
Bruins won, 65·60. agamsl a future 25-5
team and Big West champlon1.
Gadzuric, who missed an easy two-
handed dunk in the first haU. made a
similar one with 1 :04 remairung. then
great chance
to beat UCLA
at UCLA. But I
think it was a
really great
game. We
should've won
that gam1e ...
we lost a big
chance ... "
Stanlslav Zu:zak
UC Irvine sophomore
altered Green's one-handed runner m the closmg seconds to
preserve the win.
• •Jerry Green put on a show.• Lavin Sdld. ~He played bke a
Wooden Award candidate and an All-Amencan and a player who
might get drafted in the NBA. We didn't have any answer for him
in the second hail.
"Obviously we were very fortunate to be able to win this
basketball game_aga.inst UCl. (The 'Eaters) really played better
basketball than we dJd for the ftrst 36 minutes, then in the last four
minutes we were able to make some big shots and some bag free
throws.·
Alter several timeouts, Green bad the ball on the final play at
the top of the key. After UCLA's Rlco Htn switched off Green.
Gadzuric moved in oo the 6-3 Irvine tar, who forced an off·
balance shot.
•r was just trying to play real tight defense and not let tum at
least have an easy shot.• said Gadzunc, who bad ven points and
three rebounds in 29 rrunutes.
Green. who also had five rebounds, two assists. two teals and
eight turnovers, said Douglass called a high screen for him
·1 was supposed to penetrate and take the shot,· Green M1d
• 1 tried to do what I nonnally do -throw up the ball. but 1t dtdn 't
go in thls time.
·we came in and played well. We could have easily been
blown out here. but we were in it all the way to the end and I Uunk
we gained some confidence from this game.•
The Anteaters, who have lost three straight. shot 75~ in the
tee0nd half (15 of 20) and outrebounded the Bruins, 30·23
•Teams we're supposed to beat by a fair margin, we don't.·

This is our community. We live and work here and want
tO ·make a difference. Recently, we started discussing
· amo,ng ourselves what we could do to contribute to our
neighborh~ We believe education is the biggest single
factor necessary for a successful future for our children.
So, we're putting our money where it counts. For every
car sold at any Harbor Blvd. of Cars dealership, we will
donate a substantial amount to the Newport-Mesa School
District So far, we've donated $150,000 this year! Weve
just begun to make a difference in o~ ndghborhood,
and you can too ...
