F ifth~aders throughout the
district a.re getting ~ head
start on a subject some adults
still struggle with -balancing
their checkbooks.
Over the past month. the students
have been leam1ng benk:lng bas>cs,
including bow to write depostt slips,
read a registry and save money. A
collaborative effort between the
Newport-Mesa Unified School Dis·
b1ct and Downey Savings makes the
program poMible.
The program gives Downey -
established in Newport Beach m
197 5 -a chance to give back to
the community while pnMding
students with practial 1killl that
are often overlooked throughout
their educational careers. ·u you develop good habits
when you're young, then you'll
have good habits when you're
developed,• said Carrie Clark,
, ...
gonit
Newport-Mesa fifth-graders are learning what
to do with all-the money they'll eventually earn
of 1t, • Oark said.
Student Ramon Calderon SdJd
the financial tnfonnation he has
learned will come in handy wh n
he is older. Downey's field marketing manager.
The Banking Basics program
indudel a workbook to learn how to
save money. set goals and learn how
a checking account is used. Downey
also donated calculators to the
schools to help the students keep
track of their credits and debits.
At Wilson Elementary School in
Costa Mesa. Carol Redford has put
her own creative twist on the pro·
gram. giving students fake money
for savmg and spending. .
Redford said she always wanted
to esta~ a ban.king system in
her c1us and jumped at the oppor·
tunity to incorporate it into the
Downti"'y program. She created a list
of charges and debits that students
add to. Credits in their accounts
include accomplishments such as
projects completed on time and
random acts of kindness. Redford
..... ,
then charges them for things such
as their d«;sks and silly questions.
"I Jove the idea of charging
them for their desks.· Redford
wd. ·1 told them they co\lld actu·
ally lose their desks. and they wor·
ry about that someblnes. •
As Redford'• class lS a combma·
bon of fourth· and Wth-graders,
he wanted to ensure they all
grasped the bankmg concepts.
Their savvy fUWUldal acumen
made her proud.
•What lmpresHI me 11 their
excitement about banking and
their understanding of lbe debit·
credit process." Redford said.
On a recent visit to Redford's
classroom, Clark said she got •sort
of teary-eyect• seeing the banking
program in action.
"The kids all talked about the
things we wanted them to get out
"We get to know how to wnte
checks so when I grow up, I won't
have to ask people," Ramon s~ud
·And now I know how to save
money because sometun I JUSt
want lo waste it.•
Redford's tudents have been so
savvy that she has deoded to con·
tinue the program tor the f'i t of
the school year on her own and
plans to auction off fun items at th
end of the year.
Downey also sponsors an art
contest based on the program in
which the students will hove a
chance to wm certlbcat of
deposits for themselve and com·
puters for their school.

We are truly blessed to be a pan of this wonderful communiey.
We write a story about a young couple and their two young sons ... homeless and jobless,

results in job offers ... a temporary place to live and finaneial assistance. They now will
celebrate a holiday season like none they've ever had ... all becaUK of you. ~d tha~,s not

for ocher needy families.
This past year we've worked together to dean up ocean· and bay, suppon the arts,
recognize local firefighters and police officcn, aaailt seniors and develop after-school
programs for youth.
