Anatomy of a golf swing
As we ~ in 2002. Mesa Verde Country Oub men's dub
champion ¥\d two-time Jones Cup PMtJ<1pant Pete 0 ley
(Newport Be.ch) has offered a deKrtpttOn of the perfect
golf swing. ,
·everyone c:..n leam to· play golf Once a pla~ ~
m.tttered the grip and S1ance, •II he hcH to bear in mind, 1n
the brief tw<He<ond mtenral 1t takes to swing. is to keep .. the
left elbow pointed tn toward the left hip and the right arm
loose and closer to the body tha1n tM left
·Then take the club head past h•s right knff, then break
the wrkU at JUSt the right instant while the left arm rs still
traveling S1raight back from t~ ball and the right arm stays
g~ to the body. then I~ the h1ps c.o~ around m a
perfect circle ·
•Meanwhile, ~ryth1ng is mucked up unless the weight 1s
60% on the left foot and 40~ on the right and not an
ounce more or less At Just the right point 1n the turn the
left knee bends 1n toward the ngt)t iru dragging motion
until the left heel comM off the ground. but not too f•r.
·se sure the hands are over the right foot, but not on the
toe more than the heel, except that the left side of the right
foot is tilted off the ground, but not too far ·ee sure the hands at tbe top of the swing are high and
the shaft points along a hne parallel with the ground. and 1f
it's a downhill he, the shaft 1s supposed to be pointed
downhill, too Then pause at the top o f the swing and c.ount
one, ,erk the left arm straight down hke a bell n~r
ya!'k1ng a belfry rope, but don't uncork the wrists too soon
and. pull the left hip ar°"'nd 1n a circle. but don't let the
shoulden turn wrth the hips -they hctve to be facing the hole
"And, now. transfer the weight 60•.-to the left foot and
40% to the right side not an ounce more or les~ -and tilt
the left foot now so the right side o f 1t is straight that's
the one you hit against. Watch out for the left hand, it's
\uppo\ed to be extended, but not 'too stiff or the shot won't
go anywhere, and don't let 1t get loose or you will hook
And let the wrists uncork, but don't force them or you'll
smother the shot And don't break too soon. but keep your
head down. then hit the ball That's all there 1s to 1t!"
