Following a nationwide trend,

Goulet comes. back

Forty one years ago,
Robert Goulet made his
Broadway debut m the role
of Sir Lancelot in ·Camelot,·
opposite Julie Andrews and
Richard Burton. The charis-

lent to ·u Ever I Would

him a star. There are those

DisappOintments ·
·are facts of life
L lf e ts full of audition . .
interviews and tryouts.
And WJth those come
disappointments and
ucce e .
and varsity teams.
That proved disastrous later
as the district rescinded that
and decided the integrity of the .
judging proces and the judg·
ing panel should be upheld, bu(
then lef l the fmal decision to an
independent committee com-
prised o( parents and a school
You can't aJways pied e
those detcrmanang the f andJ cut.
And that's the way it goes.
Though tl sound. hke common
sense, it's become obvJOUb an
the pa~t week lfiat some peaitte
don't get it. . 1
Al Newport Hurbor High
School, a judging pap I -nor
the school's 13-year cheerlead-
ing coach -decid who
makes the ~heerleading quad.
And it eems now, the panel'~
deci ion wa n't well•rece1ved
by dejected cheerleaders.
MeanwhaJe, over at Corona
dcl Mar High School, a parent
ha sued the baseball coach.
clamung the coach made tatc-
ments that hurt htS son'
cha.nee for college recrwtmcnt.
Coach John Emm claim
the student, who didn't play has
senior year, has never pitched
faster than 80 mph. which mo t
recruiters look for.
In the cheerleadmg case, the
result has been crie of incon-
sistencies in the judging, hurt
feeUngs for many young
unprcssiondble girls and an-edr·
ly quick-fix olution by Pnnc1-
pal Michael Vo en to let dll the
girls becom part of the Junior
staff member. · '
The committee decided that
those wno didn't make the team
should, .try out agaJn. The cheer-
leaders now are gathering sig·
natures to keep all the girls on
the two teams. But Vossen will
mdke the final decision. ·
C'learly, this is a me that
could have been avoided. But
the bigger lesson that seems to
be lost on these young stu~ents,
both the cheerleaders and the
baseball player, is that there are
real rep.sons why some don't
and may never make the cut.
That is JUSt how the world
works.
W,e urge teachers and par-
ents to use this opportunity to
explain to their students and
children that disappointments
happen. It's just a fact of Ule.
Instead of blaming others
and even in extreme e'xamples,
filing a lawsuit,• we encourage
our youth to work and try
harder, and they will learn that
with a litUe luck. succe s wjJI
happen.
That, too, is a fact of life.
Welcome to town,

the caty somewhere in the
neighborhood of an additional
$300,000 a year in revenue.
The annexation should also
bring a stronger sense of uruty,
lo the Newport-'Mesa Unified
School District, which was oper·
ating schools in the unincorpo-
rated community. It may be
only, cosmetic, but now it's back
to Newport Beach and Costa
Mesa, a more obviously unUied
cUstnct.
Of course the annexation will
. bri.ng challenges for residents,
the city and the school dlstncL
But a city as strong Newport
Beach should be able to rise to
answer any problem.
So, to Newport. Coast res1:
