Getting a photo to Ulustrole thJa put me In tough
spot. To find skateboarders In general is one thing,
but once I found them, I had to show them abiding
by the low and I had to explain how I was going to
use them in the photo.
Using a 400 mm Jena, I crouched and took some
shots, purposely making it a allhouette. When Pierre
Andre noticed me, he didn't seem to mind. I kept
shooting and he kept doing tricks. I was getUng the

I approached Andre, talked with him, told him
about the story. He was a former pro skateboarder

We're ready to
welcome back
the Fish Fry
e hope the
planned
revival of the
Fish Fry this
year will
prove the old adage true: Good
thing!> come m small packages.
The Lions Club Fish Fry. for
more than 55 years a beloved
Costa Mesa tradition that
served as hometown fatr,
reunion and deep-fned beUy-
filler all m one. was canceled
last year when Orange Coast
College officials dec1ded not to
host the event after a legal dlS-
pute between OC'C and the
Lions Club Ldst-mmute
attempts to find a location,
mclucling its longtime home at
Ltons Park, faaled
The loss was much lamented.
though we noted then that
the re was a lot of hand-wring-
ing but UlUe m the way of ideas
on how the Fish Fry could be
saved. So we dre more than
pleased that the Costa Mesa
Newport Harbor Lions Club
Board of Directors eems mtent
on finding a wtty to bnng back
Uus mtegral part of the Costa
Mesa community
As 1t stands now -a fmaJ
deas1on on the Fish Fry's future
1s to be made at the board of
directors meeting on Tuesday -
this year's Fish Fry won't be the
huge, carnival-like event it was
in u:ie past. It will be more llXe
a big picnic, with a few er alt
booths and the fish dinner.
And it will be a good start.
As Lions Club President Mike
Schaefer has said, it is more
important to restore the tradi-
tion and get back momentum
than to worry about puttmg on
a blowout event.
But the Fish Fry as more than
a picnic. and the goal should be
a return to its glory day -
including, even, the old parade.
which died once m 1995, was
resurrected as the unparade
that year and again in 1996
before making its short-lived
return in 1997.
To do this, we think, will take
more than just the efforts of the
Ltons Club alone. Members of
other groups -and there are
many service organizations ln
our community -should step
forward to help rebuild this tra-
dition. which not only Lions
Club members used to enjoy.
And why not start with th.i&
year's event and make it the
biggest p1cruc anyone has ever
seen?
El Morro should not
pay for Crystal Cove
W hen the re 1dents
at CrystaJ Cove
were evicted in
July, many non-
residents reJ01ced mce tlie land
had actually become the pub·
lic's m 1979 when the state pur-
chased the parkland from the

And It was since then that
park offiaals had been trytng to
remove the tenants of the 46
cottages and open the area to
the public. Much-publicized

But th re's a hitch: Plans for

losophy The strong argument
for klclung out the cove's re i-
dents was that the land has
belonged to the public for more
than 20 years. 'nle same could
be said for El Morro, which has
also been the public's for more
than 20 years and will be for
another three years.
Paying for the now-public
Crystal Cove with money from
El Morro by extending its resi-
dents' leases another five to 10
years in 2004 only prevents the
public from tak.lilg back what is
rightfully lheln.
It ts unfortunate that funding
for th cove wu not found and
set aside beforehand. However,
that's no tau UCUM for eJlow.
