charming 7-year-old gul at
the center of the custody
battle. .
It's often difficult to watch
Penn's touching portrayal of
a man whose little girl
already has far greater men·
tal abilities than be will ever
have. There are pamful
moments as Sam's limlta·
llons as a person and a par-
ent become obVlous to Lucy
and to the social worker who
places Lucy in a foster home.
From this pomt, the movie
sets up the lawyers of sooal
services to be the villalrls
hghting against the heroic
Sdm and hts arde of men·
tdlly dlsabled fnends.
