Newport -Beach pushes for waterway cleanup

some local waterways as ·water-quality

This labeling would allow the board to
set maximum limits for certain contami-
nants in nine local water bodies. This, in
tum, would bolster the board's power to
ensure that cities in the local watershed
work to keep trash in ch~k.
•Newport Beach does a darn good job
of making sure we street sweep and do

the Bay had argued that the area 1,000 feet

city officials agreed that listing this area
would take resources away from other,
more seriously contaminated areas.
"That was a mistake,• Caustin said. "It's

Costa Mesa Htgb student Salvador Zamarripa, 15, works on bis gasoline-powered radio-controlled car.
Adding interest to engineering
Deirdre Newman
DAILY PtLOT
F or the last few months, a
group of students at Costa
Mesa High School bu spent
part of the morning outllde racing
radio-controlled cars. These stu-
dents aren't playing hooky. They're
in Steve Nelson's Math and Sci-
ence Engineering Assn. program, a
math and science class that helps
disadvantaged students get ihto
college engineering and science
programs.
When Nelson, who also teaches
'math, started the MESA class and
an additional after-school program.
two students signed up for the
elective. Now his two classes serve
60 students, and many more are
clamoring to get in. MESA is a
statewide program, but Costa
Mesa High School is the only one
to otter it as a class, Nelson said.
While some students are turned
off by science and math because
they seem boring and sterile, Nel-
son attracts students by reversing
the traditional teach1ng paradigm.
He uses exciting projects -such
Costa Mesa High teacher Steve Nelson has tossed_ rockets
and radio-controlled cars into his class. and its working
as launching rockets and racing
radio-controlled cars -to spark
inte{'est in his class and drive the
curriculum.
As a result, students such as
Salvador Zamarripa. 15, sign up for
MESA. Salvador said be was
drawn by the rockets but likes rac-
ing cars even better.
"These are way cooler than
rockets," he said. •s ut what's most
important is math. t get a lot of
help since (Nelson) is a geometry
teacher."
Nelson said it was probably
inevitable that he got involved in
MESA because of his family back-
ground -his dad is an engineer
and his mom is a teacher.
"I became a teacher who wants
to produce engineers," Nelson
said.
And although be teaches math,
he draws on his master's degree in
education to help him develop cur-
riculum, emphasizing collaborative
learning.
"I realized last year 1 could
teach a· bnlliant math lesson cµid
they wouldn't remember any of it.
but they could remember every
detail of the purple car they raced
the week before," Nelson said.
The cars are group projects
and take two to three weeks to
build. The students have been
working on the cars since the fall
and start racing them in the
spring. In addition to incorporat-
ing math and science, building
the cars teaches life lessons as
well, Nelson said.
#It's not just about cars, but
about growing up, teamwork,
responsibility,• Nelson said. "If the
radio is in your hand and it crash-
es, it's your responsibility.·
While the class is predominantly
male, the re is a growing contin-
gent of females who are signing
up. Earlier this year, Nelson sent a
group of his female students to the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena to learn about opportuni -
ties for women in engineering.
That field trip opened Elvana
Gucin's eyes to the intrlyu.e of
astronomy.
·1 was interested in engineenng
at the beginning of the year. Now
I'm more interested in the planets.·
sbe said. "I learned a lot about
JPL. That's when I got really inter·
ested in NASA.•
Nelson's efforts to get more stu·
dents excited about math and so·
ence ls paying oft. The school does
well in statewide math testing, and
students win various math awards,
he 'said.
Students can only take the class
once but may participate in the
after-school part of the program for
all four years.
"Some teachers have problems
with kids ditching their class. My
problem is kids don't want to leave
my room," Nelson said.

Monday marked the be9m-
rung or the workweek: but it
also marked the beginning of
~ week filled with possibili-
ties -particularly of rain.
While the chance of morn-
ing drizzle Monday turned
into significant rainfall in
some areas in Orange Coun-
ty, the rest of the w eek may
not follow suit.
"The cool air is gomg to hl-
ter m and disrupt the marine
layer,• Sdld Stan Wasowski, a
forecaster for the National
Weather Service in San
Diego.
Despite the usually cool
weather throughout the
month of May, Wasowski pre-
dicts that the latter part of the
week will bring more sun-
shine than rainfall.
Tuts month has already
brought a few unusually hot
days, but the next round of
sunshine will more likely reg-
ister in the normal range or
about 70 degrees, he said.
Since Orange County
received less than a quarter-
inch or rain Monday morning,
•You would need a couple
days in a row of moderate
rains for it to affect !the fire
situation),• Wasowski said.
•After a light drizzle or even
a day of rain, the plants will
dry up again as the tempera-
tute increases, bringing the
situation back up to where it
once was."
Possible showers are
expected today, followed by
expected morning and late
night fog through the rest of
the week . This season, New-
port-Mesa has registered
about 4 inches of rain, or
about a third of normal.

•At the Waldorf School,
we try to make it a loved
environment and make it
into a beautiful school.•
teacher Philip Guest said.
"Here, no one had the ener-
gy to do that because we
know we're only going to be
here for a few years.•
Waldorf schools also pride
themselves on stability, as
students stay with the same
teacher for eight years.
But instability has been
the hallmark of the Orange
County school, as it has been
forced to move eight times in
the past 15 years.
The existing facility is so
attraction to the dogs.
Finney always hated Calvin
Coolidge, and Liberty Mag-
azine always had a picture
of Coolidge. To Finney's
great satisfaction, all the
dogs urinated on that maga-
zine, and soon the magazine
was an attractive shade of
yellow.
But back to Madam La
Rue and.her feud with Bob
Gardner. In addition to
being a former actress or
singer, as she now also
claimed. the madam was a
thief. Her specialty was
cramped that the admissions
director works out of the
library because there's no
other room. The school's
lease will expire in 2004, and
officials have been scouring
the area for a pennanent site
for the past four years.
But zoning and environ-
mental issues constrain their
choices, Kastner said.
"It's a fiercely competitive
real estate market,• Kastner
said. "Being a nonprofit, it's
hard to compete with devel-
opers.·
While expanding the ele-

concern, building the high

magazines, and her special-
ty within her specialty was
the Woman's Home Com-

expensive magazine going
for 25 cents. The Saturday

And so the madam's
modus operandi ·was to slip

crowded. Many books are on high shelves
that are dilficult for young users to reach.
5. "I do not think that the proposed jolnt-
use library will provide safety and security
equivalent to the existing school library."
Actual situallon: Layout, staffing and cut-
ting-edge electronic technology will make
the new library far more secure than either
the current Mariners Elementary School
library or the existing Mariners Branch. The
entire facility will be monitored by video
security cameras. This surveillance will
augment protection by teachers and staff
trained to handle susplcious situations.
The children's room will be fully
enclosed and will have a reference desk
offering visibility of the entire room, mclud-
lng entrances and exits. A se parate
entrance adjacent to the school will be
accessible only by tedchers and students
during school hours. The re wtll be separate
boys' and girls' restrooms m the secured
children's room, in full view of the staffed
children's desk. Public use restrooms will be
on the opposite end of the library from the
children's room, in full view of circulation
staff.
6. "Schoolchildren vtslting the library for
school purposes during the day could mix
with the general public.· Actual situation:
Adults coming into the children's room will
be addressed by staff to determine their
needs and will be promptly asked to leave
if no compe lling reason for them to be there
can be given, Library staff will have visual
control over the entire room.
7. "The re ls no specUic successful exam·

Two weeks that will live in infamy
L ast Wednesday,
men, women
and children
alike could look out
their own kitchen
windows to see bat-
tle-weary, disillu-
sioned teens stumble
aimlessly out of the
Newpo'rt Harbor High
School library. These Mott Meredith poor patriots had
come within inches of
insanity and survi'i.0d. Some called
them crazy for tryihg, and others called
them masochistic, but no one could
deny their courag e.
Over the last two weeks, hundreds of
strong, determined and ultimately
extraordinary high school students sub-
jected themselves to the opuses of acad-
emic assessments: the AP tests.
•AP,• although literally denoting that
something is •Advanced Placement,•
means a lot to the college-bound stu-
dent. It means a class that is solely
geared toward one goal: to prepare one
martyring participant for one test, so be
can receive that one hallowed grade -
a five. But it also means a state of mind
in which all that exists is the subject at
hand. For a pupil of physics. the world is
seen with weight vectors sliced through
the centers of mass of all conceivable
objects. For a learner of literature, every
episode of ·Friends• can be summarized
with a major and a minor premise.
For a studen~ of computer science,
our object-oriented e nvironment is just
a chaotic array of zeros and ones. To
take an AP class is to journey into the
very depths of the human soul. Thus,
the AP test, administered in May and
usually consisting of bubbling, calculat-
ing and writing for three hours. is, if you
will, the heart of darkness.
Preparing for the AP test is a trying
ordeal. Teachers review in class and
have review sessions outside of class.
Most of them keep the level of home-
work fairly low. To give 20 minutes of
homework a week before AP tests is to
risk having students' heads sponta-
heously implode. The day before the
first AP test, AP Literature, is always
dreary and cold.
Students say goodbye to crying moth-
ers and grim fathers. At this point,
studying is futile. Frantically reading the
epilogue of "Crime and Punishment• is
a desperate but useless cry for help.
Most students gravely shut their note-
books, take a deep breath and accept
their bleak fate before the night is over.
Some are still up at 2 in the morning,
convinced that one more glance at
Spark Notes will let them eva.de the .
inevitable. And every year, without fail,
a few terrified students flee for the invit-
ing forests of Canada. The next morn-
ing, only the bravest walk into the fray,
and only the strongest walk o~t.
Without doubt, the AP test is the
most important event in one's life. It is
worthy of all the stress, pain and panic
it creates. Anyone who survives an AP
test deserves a medal. It singularly
determines where you will go to col-
lege, what job you will have and
whether or not you will be successful.
The AP test is the apex of your life, and
it you f<u.I, there is no longer any reason
to live.
Then everyone takes the tests, real-
izes 1t is not such a big deal, and feels
pretty stupid.

Parents express joint-use library concerns
AT ISSUE: Newport Beach. and Mariners Elementary
School are teaming up to raise funds for a library

aren't telling you thar many

A s a 38-year resident of

am writing to express my
opposition to the proposed
new joint-use Mariners
Branch library, as well as the
misleading efforts that are
being made on behaU of the
city and others to promote the
new library.
First, I em outraged by the
Newport qeach City Council's
off-handed dismissal of the
serious and fundame ntal safe-
ty concerns raised by parents
of elementary school children.
It bas been confinned by the
city librarian, as we ll as
Mariners Elementary School's
principal, that children will be
allowed to visit the children 's
section of the public library
(which wW double as the
school section) during school
hours without teacher super·
vision.
It also has been confirmed
that the public will be admit-
ted to the children's section of
the library during those same
hours. This creates an unnec·
essary, unwarranted risk that
should not be placed on the
shoulden of library staff and
cannot be assuaged by video
surveillance cameras. How
many "incidents• of
harassed/missing/molested
children must occur before
the City Council and school
board take this risk seriously?
I am further outraged at
the efforts that have been
expended to promote the new
Ubrory -without providing
the public with accurate or
complete lnformaUon about
the impact the creation of a
new library will have on the
aree. Por lnttance, most peo·

bas n ot been accurately

costs inherent with the pro-
posed new library (including
but not limited to costs related
to planning, construction,
operations, maintenance,
security, personnel, insurance,
etc.), most of which cannot be
covered by Proposition 14
funds.

believe that the proposed new
joint-use library is ill-con-
ceived and unsafe, and the
city's impetuous rush to gar-
ner government funds irre-
sponsible. I only hope that the
members of our community
charged with decision-making

that the "free" money they

Library proponents say
they have addressed the safe-

about a safe, separate and
secure children's area. But
that won't exist, because by
law the public cannot be

An adult wanting to check out

OCC frelbman DonnJe
Murphy is the school's Male
Athlete of the Year. Murphy,
who Coach John Altobelli
called, •a gift from Santa
Claus,• at the beginning of the
season, did not disappoint.
Murphy broke the school
singie-season record for hits
with 82. The old record was
75. .
A first-team AJJ-OEC
selection, be also amassed 13
home runs and 46 RBis, while
compiling a .425 battihg
average.
The shortstop was also a
stud on defense . He
committed only four errors in
conference play and provided
at least one defensive
highlight each game.
Murphy wun't the only
one who made the AJJ-OEC
team. Sophomore pitcher Matt
Clanton and sophomore relief
pitcher Rob Wllllams were also
first-team honorees, while
sophomore pitcher Justin
Azze, sophomore catcher Ryan
Hanson and sophomore Scott
Beerer earned second-team
laurels. Beerer made the team
in the utility slot.
As you can see, the Pirates
had a strong pitching staff this
year, leading the team to a 32-
13 season that ended Saturday
in the Super Regionals at
Riyenide. The Super
Regionals, is basically the
second round of the Southern
California Regional Playoffs.
Riverside advanded from the
best-of-three series to the
State Championships in
Fresno.
OCC freshman softball
player Jessica Lee, who batted
.485, earned second-team All·
OEC recognition this past
season.
In OCC football: Highly
regarded linebacker Marvin
Simmons will not play for the
Pirates in the fall. OCC Coach
Mike Taylor said Simmons,
who was a medical redsbirt
last season, will play for
Compton College next fall.
Simmons did not fit in with
OCC's emphasis on

Taylor also said, this fall,

"He.'s probably the best

postseason. She also collected
26 RBis and smacked one

OCC coaches cu take a
collective sigh of relief. The
Pirates have hired a new
sports information director.
And if Coast's recent hirings
(men's basketball coach Steve

coach John Knox) are any
indication, Eric Montgomery
will definitely fill the need for acc.
Montgomery, 25, who
earned his degree at Azusa

NAIA school in Florida .
He bested a field of roughly
83 applicants.

"The three w ords I've

teamwork and class,· Keith

my teams represe nt those
things.·
Al Irvine, Keith guided the

they lost to then-South Coast

he plans tio stay awhile.
