Witnesses tell of victim's cries for help

SANTA ANA -The prosecution
and defense on Tuesday told similar
stories with contrasting conclusions
during their opening statements in
the trial for a Downey man accused
of killing a 49-year-old Newport
Beach man in the crowded parking
lot of a Costa Mesa fast-food restau-
rant a year ago.
Several witnesses for the prose-
cution Tuesday said they either saw
or heard Ramadan Dokovic, 42,
shoot Miroslav Marie several times
on the afternoon of May 18, 2001.
Witnesses said they heard Marie's
repeated cries for help and saw
Dokovic pump bullets into his body.
The incident, which Costa Mesa
police call the most public homicide
in the city's history, had more to it
than met the eye, prosecutor Matt
Murphy said.
Murphy and Public Defender
Dolores Yost took the coUrt 10 years
back in time to when Dokovic
entered New York City as an immi-
grant from his native Yugoslavia.
That's where he met cousin Mike
Dokovic, the attorneys said.
Mike Dokovic, whose real name
is llmija Frljuckic, they said, was
involved in a bank fraud that
Ramadan Dokovic helped expose to
fede ral investigators. Ramadan
Dokovic received probation and
relocated to California. But Mike
Dokovic received a brief prison sen -
tence and was deported.
Ramadan Dokovic moved to
Downc?i but things did not go well
for him, Murphy said.

tried working in a pizza place, then
as a machinist. He had no job. Not
even a car.·

Verdolt, Murphy said . Ramadan
Dokovic, who somehow obtained
that information; contacted Verdolt
and told tum he would get the
watches back for a price -$20,000.
Mike Dokovic, on the other hand,
returned to the United States and
found his way into Newport Beach,
where he headed a fraud ring that
ran a credit card scam, Murphy said.
•He had a lot of shady dealings,
made a lot of money and was living
the high We," he said.
Mike Dokovic also possessed
stolen Rolex watches that belonged

Volunteer efforts relay
her gratitude for life
P at Smith, a 15-year survivor
of ovarian cancer, says she
should have died twice but
was saved by God to work on
Relay for Life.
As the co-chair for the 24-hour
awareness-raising event that
began Friday and ended Saturday,
the Newport Beach resident says
being a volunteer for the first-time
relay is her way of giving back to
the·ctty that helped her be here
today.
"I have lived here probably for
30 years, I have had businesses
here, I have two grown children
who live here and I'm a grandma,
and I'm 65 wonderful years,• said
the volunteer who teaches at
Corona del Mar High School.
Since becoming involved in
Relay for Life in December, Snuth
has met with a leading committee
once a month at Newport Beach
City Hall and worked to increase
publicity for the event.
She worked to secure teams for
the relay, get sponsorships and
rouse enthusiasm. Her Relay
efforts have taken about five
hours out of every day in recent
months.
The American Cancer Society
event, which was led also by city
officials, including Newport Beach
Counolman Steve Bromberg,
involved teams of five to 20 par-
t1c1pants who took turns runrung
or walking at Newport Harbor
High School for 24 hours.
"It took awhile for the commu-
nity to get the idea of the 24
hours, but the reason it's 24 hours
is because cancer doesn't take
lime out for people," said Smith,

gun a little for traditional procla-

Board of Supemsors on Tuesday
proclaimed September to be Child

of the monthlong children's festi-

SupervlSor Tom Wilson, who

"We usually don't do proclama-

because the concept revolves
around awareness, our goal is to
draw attention to the month
beforehand," Wilson said.
He said it is important to pro-
mote activities that emphasize
children as a pnority. The festival
will allow those who have an inter-
est in children's well-being to
come together in one place and
focus on the things that are neces-
sary to keep young people safe
and happy.
"It is very unportant for families

CORONA DEL MAR -
One man and two juveniles,
all of Santa Ana, were taken
into custody Tuesday on sus-
picion of vehicl~ burglary
after tesidents reported
strange noises in a carport,
police said.

But seeing how the pas-
sionless objectivity of sci-
ence couldn't dredge up
any evidence that the dis-
trict's sewage plume is the
chief culprit behind beach
contamination, the district
might reasonably argue that
its waiver is harmless, or
relatively so, and saves
county taxpayers scads of
loot.
That one doesn't work in
this case, however. And
here's why.
The Orange County
SanHation District has
invested millions of dollars
investigating the source of
coastal contamination in
Newport Beach apd
Huntington Beach. It still
has no answers, save for the
Raul Hernandez, 20, was
arrested Tuesday and his
alleged accomplices, both
17-year-old boys, were taken
into custody in relation to at
least two car burglaries in
the area, said Newport
Beach Sgt. Steve Shulman.
Hernandez is awaiting bis
arraignment while in city jail
on $10,000 bail. The boys
were not arrested, but were
detained and released to
their parents, he said.
Police responded about 1
a.m. to an apartment com·
plex on the corner of Bayside
Drive and Marguerite
Avenue after a resident
reported noises in the car-
what he was looking for. But
Yost argued that Dokovic was
merely trying to get out of the
situation alive. He wanted
only a confrontation with
Mike Dokovic, who was tar-
nishing "the fiµnily name,·
and to make some money in
the process by returning the
watches, sbe said.
"This is a case about choic-
one that exonerate& them as
the lone or principal culprit.
We can only generally reck-
on -propped up by much
guessing -that bacterial
contamination of our local
shores has many sources,
from leaking sewer systems
to urban runoff.
Now the bram unagines
that these sources of bacte-
ria -whatever their degree
of culpability today -will
only multiply with time.
Indeed, a relatively recent
report by the Southern
California Assn. of
Governments forecasts that
the region's population will
swell by the equivalent of
three Chicagos over the
next 20 years. And so I
imagine that will mean
much more of the sludge of
urban dwelling from our
neighbors inland will flow
on down the Santa Ana
River into our lovely little

The head-scratching and
inconclusive epilogue of the
sanitation district's study -
implying an intricat~ and
complex labyrinth of
sources for our current cont-
amination woes :....... only
serves to foreshadow just
how nettlesome and impos-
sible the sanitation picture
is likely to become over the
next generation. And that's
a specter, though ill·
defined, which holds omi·
nous implications for the
economies (and water quali-
ty) of Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa and Huntington
Beach.
It's no longer enough for
the Orange County
Sanitation District to contin·
ue substandard sewage
treatment protocols under
the protection of federal
waivers simply because it
down, and offlcers took the
suspects into custody, he
said.
•ThiJ shows what an
important tool the helicopter
is becaUH these people fled
into an area that would have
been very difficult to find
them in without air support,•
Shulman said.

out of the situation, Yost said.
She said evidence will show
that Marie got the first shot at
Dokovic in the two men's fight
for the gun. It was only later
that Dokovic gained posses-
sion of the gun, Yost said.
The prosecution presented

has no evidence that those
_;practices are materially con-
tributing to contaminated
shorelines and beach clo-
sures. That's here-and-now
thinking that fails to noodle
on the econoinic and envi-
ronmental effects of future
growth.
Which is why the district
shouldn't seek an extension
of its waiver. It should
instead adopt intermediate
treatment strategies, such as
bleaching, and begin pon-
dering mechanisms to
finance full secondary treat-
ment of Orange Co\¥}ty
sewage.

Streaking CdM battles
Northwood, hoping to

at hands Qf Tunberwolves.

DAILY PILOT
IRVINE -Corona d.e Mar High Coach Steve
Conti is to the CJF
Southern Section boys
volleyball playoffs what
Bob Baffert is to biple-crown
horse racing. The bigger the stakes,
the better each seems to inspire their
athletes to peak perfonnance.
For CdM, that has meant five
straight trips to a section bUe match. A
sixth straight trip is al stake tonight at
Irvine High, where Northwood, a
familiar nemesis, awaits in a Division
rv semifinal at 7.
The 11mberwolves (23· 1) are the
No. 2 seed and have already swept the
Sea Kings (14·7) in two Paohc Coast
League matches.
Northwood, wtuch went 10-0 to
win the PCL, topped visibng CdM,
15·12, 15-12, 15·13, Apnl 17, then
earned a 15·12, 15·10, 15~ triumph
May 2 on the Sea Kings' floor.
Coach John Gaido's squad has
faced little challenge in three playoff
victories, sweeping Rancho AJamitos,
Los ,c\.ltos and Servile by a combined
135-4.5 margin.
But the Sea Kings, who finished
third in the PCL, have swept se«>nd·
round opponent South Pasadena and
quarterfinal visitor Harvard· Westlake
by a combined 90-36 margm ··alter
raUymg past Ocean View, 15-6, 13·
15, 7·15, 16-14, 15-8, in a first-round
war.
Northwood is deHrutely the War
Emblem of torught's match, a reabty
Conti not only acknowledges but
embraces.
• U I were going to write a scenario
for us, to be playmg a team we've lost
to for a chance to get to the finals
would be the one 1 would write,• Conti
said. •Now, we just need to complete
the happy ending. U we win this one,
no one will remember the first two.•
Conb swd tus Sea Kings competed
weU with the T-wolves in the first five
of their si:x games thts season. He said
the key to Northwood's success has
been Its consistency.
"They're a real solid team that is
not going to go out and bJ!al
themselves,· Conti said. "That's why
they have been able lo beat bigger,
more physical teams.•
Conti said Northwood has not lost
a game, let alone a match, S10ce falling
to Newport Harbor, 15-10, 10-15, 15-
11, in the final of the Orange County
Champaonslups March 18.
The Sea Kings, however, have put
things together of late, including a
strong performance against Harvard·
Westlake.
·everyone was on the samS! page
that night and we were all working for
a common goal,· Conti said. ·A lot of
things went right for us. We had three
seniors on the floor (6-foot-4 mlddle
blocker Ryan IJµnan, setter Spencer
Miller and outside hitter John Grod) all
giving us good leadership and some

other guys stepped up, as well.·
CdM has also received strong play
from freshman KeVlll Welch, f>-61uruor
mlddle blocker Eric Jones and 1uruor
Brandon Shenck-Odom. Juruor Bart
Welch, who saw lunited acbon in the
quarterfinal after rrussmg mOst of the

A 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card, the
