That's not to ay that Esterley.
who has given her ume and ener-

take the work senously. She has
devoted her life to it.
But a key component for her is
quaUty time spent with quality
people. She has one other criteria
for her volunteer actlvitles.
·11 has to be a good cause that
touches me m some way,• Ester-
ley said. •Most of the people (I
volunteer with) aren't anto being
seen. They're JUSt really into
doing good · .
For much of her hfe, Esterley
was a profe s1onal events plan-
ner. Esterley, who says she's in
her 50s. was hued m 1990 by the
construction firm that built the
Thomas L. Riley termmal at John
Wayne Airport
To crack the seal right, Ester-
ley and her staff put together a
grand opening black-ue gala that
was attended by about 5,000 peo-
ple.
from UC Berkeley.

CIF accomodates all
at-large basketball
candidates, while deserving
soccer schools are snubbed.
C IF Southern Section staff
members have a gargantuan
task. U you don't believe me,
try to run a rotisserle league for more
than 500 teams in about two dozen
sports, virtually without a break from
August through June.
For the most part, the section staff
of about 14, including a commission·
er and three assistant commissioners,
run the prep athletic show, most
speolically playoff compebtion. m a
first-rate manner that makes the
Southern Section nationally
renowned for excellence and
efficiency.
U you've spent any time observing
the mner workings of section
employees. as I have, you'd

invariably bave a

But-and you
knew this was
coming -there
are, inevitably,
vestiges of rust in
the well-oiled
machine. And,
casting off from
aforementioned
peanut gallery. I'd
like to point out a
few grinding gears that were
unveiled Sun(jay and Monday.
when playoff pairings for winter
sports were revealed at section
headquarters in Cerritos.
Paul Castillo, an assistant
commissioner in charge of basketball,
said the reason all 57 at-large
candidates were admitted into the
boys basketball playoffs was that the
section believes It is there to
accommodate student-athletes by
creating as many competitive
opportunities as possible.
Sounds good, right? A little like
coming out in favor of the American
flag.
All but one of these at-large
candidates flt into either 16-or
32-entry brackets. ln 16-team
brackets. most at-large entries simply
became first-round fodder for league
champions, with the four seeds
usually first in line to consume these

In Dlvis1on Ill-A. however, there
were already exactJy 16 automatic
