that the city should take a

Showi,ng heart when it comes to Parkinsan ~ disease research
T oday is Valentin 's Day. So
what you say? lb quote from
the script of the recently
releosed film ·Moulin Rouge,· writ-
ten and directed by Bu Leb.nnaa. _
·Love lifts you up where you
belong -all you need is love .... •
No matter what problems you face
today or any other day, remember
that love as ultimately the only
thing that matters. If you are lucky
enough to be loved, return the
emotion today 1n anyway that
suits your heart GUts are mean·
mgJess compared to the exchange
of love.
How am} supposed to segue
mto a story about Parkinson's dis-
ease following thet? Actually, tt•s
easy. Local Parkinson's research
.advocate Jim WarNw, a man who
also suffers Crom the disease, has as
big a heart as any bwnan being on
the planet. This husband and
father. son and brother is always
first in line in the ~wport-Mesa
community, and beyond, wherever
his generoslty can make a differ-
ence in the lives of others. Warsaw
and fellow volunteer organizers
work around the clock raising
funds and awareness in search of a
cure for Parkinson's.
Warsaw called recently from
Philadelphia, working in a hotel
room in a Ramada Inn holding
meetings with East Coast staff
members preparing to launch War-
saw's upcoming campaign, being
called •A War On Parkinson's•.
Working with national fund-raiser
Marc PoWck. who bas created a
foundation called •Gtving Back,•
Warsaw in conjunction with actor
Michael J. Fox and other promi-
nent Americans afflicted with
Parkinson's inducling Mohammed
All and Janet Reno, have launched
an unportant national program to
fmd the cure. Warsaw is currently
working on a Newport Beach cock·
taJl recepbon to support his cause.
Several years ago, attending a
Parkinson's fund-raiser in Orange
County with Warsaw. experts

Parkinson's realm, also encourag-
ing th05e suffering from a number
of diseases such as cystic fibrosi ,
multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer'
disease. .
Three years have passed. While
there ls still tremendous hope,
those suffering ask the question
•How long is it going lo take?•
More to the point, they ask, ·wm I
Uve to see the cure?•
Warsaw is bullish. He insists that
answers are on the horizon and
that the fight, and be says it is defi-
nitely a figHt, to find a cure is
doable U the sectors of the scientific
community, the government and
pnvate e9terpri.se work together
with a focused and unrelenting
plan. Warsaw has gtven his life to
the cause. He does so, of course, for
his own good. ln the end, his
actions will potentially help mil·
lions.
The Newport citizen is not look·
ing for a pat on the back. He is not
looking for glory. Despite bis dis-
ease, Warsaw considers himseU a
lucky man. At 52, married to EUyne
and the father of two teenage sons.
Warsaw readily admits that the
freedom allowing hlm to devote his
life to the Parkinson's cduse is the
result of the business foresight of
tus late father. a pioneer in the
sports marketing held. The late
Davtd Warsaw was responsible tor.
among other creative business suc-
cesses. the prollleration of sports
logos on baseball caps. His compa-
ny was sold to Nike for a consider-
able sum.
lrorucally, the finanoal freedom
resulting from this success may also
be llnked to the Parkinson's that
has afflicted Jim Warsaw. He con-
fides that dS a young boy growing
up in his father's busines he
worked around enormous vats of

More than 500 famity members ar,d friends joined forces for the 41st annual National Charity league
Inc., Newport Chapter, Debutante Ball. The event honored 23 outstanding young women, who, in the
spirit of philanthropy donated a collective 6,500 hours of service in the Newport-Mesa community.
The charity ball, under the domain of Mrs. Richard Keith Lauer, unfolded at the Hyatt Regency Hotel,
Irvine with the artistic direction of Andrew Gromeck of Costa Mesa. The debutantes were presented
by James Roberts, entering the ballroom in classic floor-length gowns with long white gloves. The tra-
dition of passing the spirit of philanthropy from mother to daughter was noted with style, as the
young women took their bows before society.

20s. It is possible that the exposure
to these chemicals may have trig·
gered the disease, Warsaw said.
Scientists are uncertain.
At this pomt m life the reason
why is not of concern Warsaw.
What metters is finding out how lo
cure the disease. Research doctors
al n;iajor national drug companies
have been worlung for years on
possible solutions. The same is true
for soentifk teams assigned to
Parkm.son's at the National lnsti·
tutes of Health, headquartered m
Bethesda, Md.
ln the wake of Sept. 11 , 1t IS
understandable that national focus
has shifted dramatically, with gov-
ernment and corporate budgets, as
well as charitable glVmg, durun-
ished for many causes mduding
health related concerns such as
Parkinson's. Therefore. the chal-
lenge is even greater for Warsaw
and so many others working for the
same goals. For Uus reason. War-
saw will ofUc1ally declare war on
earkinson's d1 an upcoming cocktail
reception in Newport Beach tenta·
lively set for early May.
·The answers are out there.·
says Warsaw adding. •With the
heJp of people who are committed
to fmding the answers. we will find
the cure.·

A bout 35-plus years

There are actually three
d.J!ferent Avila's El Rancbitos
ngbt near here. and the story
is that each member of the
fanuly got their own to run as
they see fit, with the promise
to keep the traditional foods
and generations-old recipes
that made the place such a
popular onginaL
However, each of these
three does have lts own
chann and singular merits.
The restaurant on Placentia
Avenue makes its own tor-
tillas nght there, bot and deli·
dous. It's something that I
believe places this restaurnnt
above the others. The El Ran-
cluto on the Balboa Peninsula
has a great patio and is a bot
spot at rught. Avila's on East
Coast Highway m Corona del

to because we can walk to it.
and that's a huge plus con-
sidenng it 1S almost vital to
conbnue breathing to take a
few steps after a huge Mexi-

The restawant on East

to the outside and really just

like due to theu gifted mar-

I also often order party
platters for events at our
house. You cannot beat the
deal, and Lord knows I could
never out-cook the deal. You
can get a dozen bumtO'I, or d

Suffice 1t to say that El Ran-

al basics, enchilada • burri-

some unique standouts as
well. The hrimp ceviche

salsa. avocado and warm tor-
tillas, is really light and real-
ly great: a nice snack, and
even better appetizer.
Chmgolingas are also

as far as I know -htedded
chicken ln a crispy pastry with
a tangy sauce. m addition to
the salsa for dipping. Th
dl'e always a party platter tut,
but need to be eaten right
