The Commodore Club attended in unUorm, Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce members = attended and so did former President R.icba.rd Nixon, which explained all the Newport Beach Police ca.rs in front of the Newport Harbor Lutheran Church. Jim de Boom. a former Newport· Mesa Unified School District trustee and Community & Clubs columnist for the Pilot, remembers it well. •Nixon counted Richard as one of his friends, in good times and bad times," da Boom said. That's the kind of presence Richard had in NeWp<>rt Beach. He is remembered most ln three ways: as the owner of Richard's Udo ~et, a business which is said to have helped form Udo Isle: as the founder of lbe Goofoffers Club; and as the reason .behind the Dick Rlcha.rd-s Break.fast Club. He was one of the dty's earliest merchants and Chamber ol Com· merce memben, one of the p1oneer· ing bustn s leaders who helped th dty prosper. •He has a group still going. The group still meets in his honor -the Dick Richard's Brealda t Club," de Boom said. We'll start with his market, which Richard opened in 1948. It was con· sidered atyp cally luxurious for the Newport Beach area. • Jt was elegant for a market.• said Gay Wassall-Kelly, whose family would buy meat tbere and take it all the way back to the Sa.n Fernando Valley. 11They had unusual products in there, whether it was imported or not." Wassall·Kelly remembers she bought her first can of capers at the market. Goods like that were rare ln Newport ~ch because some still considered it a vacation spot instead of an year-round residential city. "But be brought a little class into his grocery store,• she said. The topic is a touchy one 1J\ the wake of the administra- tion's handling of poUbcaJ sci- ence professor Kenneth Hearlson alter he was charged with harassing Mus- lim students dunng one of his lectures. Hearlson was not able to go back to the classroom unW an independent lnvestigation was completed.
