NEWPORT BEACH -In only
three months, the grass-roots fund-
raising campaign for the proposed
joint-use Mariners library has
exceeded its ambitious St-million
goal, making it eligible for $2 mil-

The announcement Wednesday
came as Newport Beach and New-

officials unveiled a design for the
library, which has raised safety con-
cerns in the community.
The new state-of-the-art library
will be a ope-story, 14,000-square -
foot building to replace the existing
Mariners Branch Library on Irvine
Avenue. The lot is on city property
next to the Mariners Elementary
School campus. Students will visit
the children's section of the public
The project now awaits approval
from city and school district officials
at their respective meetings on
Tuesday. Even if the application
makes it to the state, it will still have
to compete for the joint-use Proposi-
tion 14 dollars.
District and city officials say safe-
ty concerns raised by some commu-
nity members helped them to find a
solution that proved elusive at first

have come together to make this a
better project,• said Homer Bludau,
Newport Beech's city manager. •Not
that we didn't have those concerns
ourselves, but the community's con-
cerns forced us to deal with them.•
But some library opponents
charge their fundamental fear has
still not been alleviated -that the

Water board approves 3 sewage plume studies

NEWPORT BEACH-Regional
water-quality regulators last week ,
extended three studies they hope
will pinpcmt the cause of bacterial
contamination found in a plume of
sewage off the city's coasWne.
On Friday, the Santa Ana
Regional Water Quality Control
Boa.rd gave a green light to the
studies that could fill the void that
a previous $5.1 ·million study left
for the district.
The water board unanimously
approved the studies to map the
patterns of ocean currents, create
scientific models to examine the
plume and cornJ>a(e the district's
waste discharges with data from
Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
The three studies have been
included ln the Orange County
Sanitation District's 2002-03 budget
at a C06t of $171,000 for the work.
Every year, district officials are
required by federal law to present
ways they are analyzing the effect
of their plume on the ocean envi-
ronment, said Kurt Berchtold, the
board's assistant executive officer.
•Some of the studies would
provl4e some additional infonna-
tion that would help to better
understand the plume," he said.
"They are required."
The sanitation dlstrict, via a fed·
eral waiver, discharges 240 million
gallons of partially treated sewage
into the ocean each day. The waiv-
er allows the district to meet lower
standards than those laid out in the
Clean Water Act of 1972.
District officials are moving to
renew the waiver, which has
already been renewed twice since
it was first granted in the 1980s.
The studies would be in addition
to regular monitoring and testing of

SANTA ANA -A jury on
Wednesday convicted a Downey
man of first-degree murder, saying
he publicly shot and killed a Newport
Beach resident a year ago in the
parking lot of a Costa

restaurant.
The grisly shoot·
ing killed 49-year-old
Miroslav Marie on
the afternoon of May
18, 2001, in a crowd-
ed parking lot of a
Jack in the Box
restaurant at the Ramadan
intersection of Tustin Dokovic
Avenue and 17th
Street. The incident was witnessed
by several people.
Ramadan Dokovic, 42, faces 25
years to life in prison, as well as addi-
tional penalties for using a weapon. It
took the 12-member Jury. consisting
of 11 women and one man, more
than three days to reach a verdict.
The case was as much a challenge
for the detectives who investigated it
as it was for the attorneys involved
because, as 1t turned out, the shooting
was connected with a credit card
fraud ring operated in the Newport-
Mesa area by Dokovic's nephew,
Mike Dokovic. The FBI has tSSued
arrest warrants for both Mike Dokovic
and his brother, Amo Dokovic. m con·
nection with the fraud nng
Ramadan Dokovic told pobce m
taped interviews that he and Mike
Dokovic moved to New York from
their native Yugoslavia 10 years ago.
In the tapes that were played as part
of the evidence during the trial,
Ramadan Dokovic said he cooperated
with federal agents and helped them
arrest Mike Dokovic for bank fraud.
In return, Ramadan Dokovic
received probation and then relocat-
ed to California, while Mike Dokovic
got jail time and was deported. But

On Wednesday, Supt.
Robert Barbot defended the

reasonable precautions will
be taken.

The idea for the Khool-
public library was originally
conceived by Walt Howald,
president of the Coast Com-
munity College board of
trustees, and Barbot. The idea
was to take advantage of
state funds that neither the
city nor school district could
pony up for a project of this
magnitude, Howald said.
While some parents -have
complained that there have
not been ample forums for
discussion, the school board,
Mari.nen;. 'Elementary School
and libnuy board have each
hosted public meetings. The
design changed three times
based on community input,
Martnen Principal Pam
Coughlin said ..
Al the cunent design
reflects, the entire children's
section wW encompass an
approximately 4,000-squar-e-
foot area. Mariners students
will have the secured use of
the school portion of this sec-
tion for about 30 hours per
week. They will access the
area through a separate
school entrance.
Although the final details
are still being hammered out,
current safety precautions
include the separate·
entrance, separate bathrooms
in the children's sections,
video cameras and a security
patrol.
And more procedures still
must be fteshed out, includ-
ing how students will access
the library during lunch and
recess, Barbot said.
Supporters embarked on
their fund-raising campaign
in early March and, as oJ
Wednesday, more than 600
individual donors have
pitched in, for a grand total of

A dirty idea· that
needs to be dumped
S ome ideas are slam-
dunks. Some ideas
are weU-meant. but
rld wed. And the n the re are
ideas such a s the one
being µitched by a New
Jprsey congressman to
change the nation's long-
standing Clean Water Act,
ideas so nusguided they
would be laughable if they
weren't so threatening.
In this case, the threat is
that the proposed legisla-
tion would allow boaters to
dump partially treated
sewage into Ne wport Har-
bor and the Back Bay.
That's right. Right now,
there is strong federal pro-
tection on both water bod-
ies. But under this proposal,
boaters could simply disin-
fect their waste through a
process that kills bacteria
but not viruses.
Newport Beach city
leaders, rig htly, are out-
raged by the bill. They
quickly sent word to Rep.
Chris Cox, re questing that
he oppose the proposal.
And they were right to act
immediately -this bill, if
made Jaw, would dirty our
wate rs, plain and simple .
Leaders in neighboring
Huntington Beach, who are
equally against the bill -
which was introduced by
Republican Rep. Jim Saxon
-are also rallying opposi-
tion and working with their
congressman, Rep. Dana
Rohrabacher. Leaders in
both cities also would be
wise to get together to pool
their influence to sink this
proposal well before it gets
any more life.
Fortunately, it appears
that our local representa-
tives see the utter folly of
this proposal.
"If the embers were ever
stoke d, our local delegation
would stamp it out immedi-
ately," Cox said. •There's
no reason to worry about it
becoming law .... I am
very concerned with
whether the bill has any
prospects. And it does not."
That is the sound of
strong opposition we want
to hear toward this bill. But
until it is finally stamped
out, our elected officials
should not let up in their
fight. This bill deserves to
be nothing more than a
dirty memory.
Costa Mesa ·on its
way to bea u tification
I n response to your May 9
editorial, ·Costa Mesa
Needs a Unified Face,·
you are proposing a laudable
goal but. in my opinion,
going about 1t m the wrong
way. Good architecture is
certainly desirable, but in
private development, this is
difficult for a dty to control
and I think properly so.
You state that Costa Mesa
1s still destined to be a
hodgepodge because the
17th Street Promenade, Har-
bor Center and Thangle
Square don't look alike.
Thank goodness they don't
look alike, for I believe diver-
sity m arctutecture is a posi-
tive thing for a dynamic city.
Universities are not unlike
cities in this regard. The
leaders at UC Berkeley, Har-
vard and UC Irvine have
purposely utilized different
renowned arc.hitects for their
buildings to create diverse
architecture, which adds real
interest to the campuses.
In Newport Beach, which
most people consider an
attractive dty, the architectwe
of Mariner's Mile, Newport
Center Fashion Island, Balboa
Island, Udo Isle and Corona
del Mar is all different.
To suggest that East 17th
ls a street that people just
drive through and don't stop
and spend money is ludi-
crous. My wife and I and
many of our friends here in
Newport Beach find that we
utilize the many varied com -
mercial resources on 17th
Street several times during
Ron Hendrkkson
COMMUNFrY COMMENTARY
the week. We think it's a
great shopping street and
easy to navigate. With the
likes of the 17th Street Prom-
enade, it is only going to get
better.
While the city has little or
no control over the arcbitec·
ture of privately developed
buildings, it does have con-
trol over the public spaces
(i.e. streets, sidewalks, etc.).
This is where the real oppor-
tunity lies for doing some-
thing about providing ?our
"unified face" for Costa
Mesa. All it takes is an
expert urban planning team
and money.
Unification is not ·achieved
with the likes of red tile
roofs, but by the street scape
(i.e. landscaping, street light-
ing fixtures, street furniture,
public signage and standards
for private signage) where
econqmically feasible under
grounding of utilities maies
a huge aesthetic difference.
Of course many of these
features have been provided
in the South Coast Plaza
area, so now let's ju.st stretch
the street scape over the rest
of the city and, ln time, with
th1s as a goal, it will bring
about the beautiful unified
Costa Mesa that you hope
for, and the residents will be
more proud of their dty.

Newport-Mesans share Fish Fry memories
AT ISSUE: The annual Lions
Club Fish Fry was a no-show
for the second year in a row,
though organizers promise it
will return.
Y ou asked for input on our
feelings about the Fish Fry
(•Fish Fry dead in the water
again," Saturday). I guess I feel
guilty because I haven't attended in
about 20 years, but I do have my
child.hood memories.
My family attended our first Fish
Fry back in June 1957. Costa Mesa
was a very different place back then,
full of empty lots and growing fami-
lies. I remember the parade on 19th
Street and the big carnival at what
was then called •Costa Mesa Park."
As a kid, it was very exciting and
we always looked forward to the
Fish Fry to usher in summer vaca-
tion. It was an annual ritual. I must
confess I never ate any fish, but I do
remember the parade with the local
marching bands and how exciting it
was to see someone you knew actu-
aUy marching in the parade.
After the parade came the ridesl
To a kid in the '50s, this stuff was so
exciting. As an adolescent, it was a
safe place to bang out with friends
in the evening hours and flirt with
boys from a distance.
Later, as an adult, I entered my
children in baby contests and rode
with them on carnival rides that now
make my stomach churn. It was still
fun and exciting enjoying the events
through their eyes.
My kids are now grown and have
kids of their own. Do I miss the Fish
Fry? I think so, but maybe it's just the
memory I miss. Tunes have changed
and innocent parades are no longer
tolerated as they get in the way of
bustling traffic and fast-paced, low
tolerance mind-sets, driven by the
pressures of urgent activity.
It's harder and harder to capture
the small-town community spirit that
launched the Fish Fry in the first
place.
OK, now I'm back in the year
, 2002. I do miss the Fi.sh Fry, and will
definitely take my grand.kids in
future yean. It's for a good cause
and we can never have too much of
that.

Costa Mesa
It bappem aloWly, subtly, insldl-
ously, re lentlessly and senselessly.
Things that are near and dear to us
as individuals, our families, our com-
munities, the cities of Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, our organi-
zations, our traditions and charities
disappear weekly, monthly and
yearly.
This month, it is the Lions Club
Fish Fry, in July the fireworks in the
Dunes, last year parts of the swap
meet and years before that top-
notch entertainment at the Pacific
Amphitheater. All of these issues
could have and should have been
solved and settled by a little bit of
cooperation.
That a twisted ankle -by a resi-
dent of Irvine visiting an Orange
Coast College computer meeting -
at the Fish Fry in Costa Mesa could
ground a beloved family charitable
event makes no sense at all.
Why? Because we choose to make
a mockery of the legal tort system
and turn it into a game far bigge r
than Las Vegas. In the e nd, we all
lose except for the trial lawyers and
a few lucky rollers of the dice.
We literally are at war for survival
as a community and natioo but
instead of fighting terrorism, we con-
tinue to fight ourselves. In fact, since
Sept. 11, the number of lawsuits bas
gone up, not down. Recent figures
suggest 1.2 million lawsuits yearly in
California. Bach of us -every day
in every way -has everything we
do (or can't do) or buy affected by
lawsuit abuse.
For that privilege, it is estimated
that everyone in Newport-Mesa
pays a lawsuit tax of $1,500 to
$2,000 per year for protection.
What's next in the legal bull's-
eye? The Orange County Fair or our
beaches?
We need to change the rules of
this insidious game before we -as
a community -have nothing left to
share and enjoy. Yes. I miss the fry.
But, more important, all 100,000-plus
of us in this dual community should
resent having good and charitable
things ruined by a few bullies.

I've lived in Costa Mesa for 29
years and I've always enjoyed going
to the Fish Fry down at Lions Park. I
don't know why they moved it from

Why can't it come back to Lions
Parlt? I just want to see it come back
to Uons Pert. I don't know who the
dty playen are but &0metimes the
city is so stupid in what they do.
It just doesn't seem right to be at
Orange Coast College. Bring back
the Fish Fry. Bring back the parade.
I think tli'e city is really screwing up

stay Costa Mesa. Keep Costa Mesa

I feel that the liability -was that
hole in the curb where she stepped
off -was there prior to the Fish Fry
taking over. That should have l1een
under the school or city to make
sure all holes are covered.
But the lawsuit stopped thou-
sands of people; thousands of people
can't go and enjoy the Fish Fry. So
let's see whose going to sue next.
These lawsuits are just outrageous. 1
think the liability shouldn't have
been on the Lion's Club.

Yes we do miss the Fish Fry. Our
family has a long history here in
Cost Mesa. My grandmother, who is
82, has not missed one Fish Fry, only
the last two. My mother has not
missed one either since 1947. All of
us kids and cousins have been in the
baby contest.
I have two cousins who have won
the car. We never miss one day of
the three-day event. We use the Fish
Fry for family reunions.
Family comes from miles around
to stay at grandma's. We allo have
a picture of my brother when be
was 5 years old getting his fish din·.
ner. It was ln the paper. We have
won many prizes, it has been very
saddening that the Fish Fry bas
been canceled two years ln a row.
Please bring it beck. The Pi.ah Pry
is a part or our lives. We really miss
it.

C.ekbrafing the Art of Dining on the orange Coast
T he Art of Dining XV,
produced by Udo '
elegant Joan
and co-chaired b excep-
tionally dynamic women,
Diane Coon and Erin Trunel,
attracted the best and the
brightest of society in support
of the Orange County Muse-
um of ft..rt .
Over the past decade and
a half, the Art of Dining bas
become one of the most
prestigious social-cultural
events on the NeWJ>Orl
Coast. The show -and it is
very much a show in many
aspects, from the decor to the
cuisine to the presentations
and honorees -is created
with unparalleled attention
to detail. The chair and the
committee are focused on
producing an event that
maximizes funds raised for
the museum while at the ·
same time offering a cutting-
edge party, full of surprises
and stimulation.
THE CROWD
Ria ch, Coon and Thmel
pulled out all the stops under
an enormous white tent
erected adjacent to the
Orange County Performing
Arts Center. Four hundred
dazzling guests, dressed to
kill and showing off the fam-
ily jewels, paraded past the
valets into the big top to s1p
The crowd included the
exceptionally chic Zee
Allred, international
socialites Marsha and Daryl
Anderson, man-about-town
George Argyros Jr., dedicat-
ed art patrons Alllon and
Oscar Frenzel, community
leaders Barbara and Alex
Bowie, and best-dressed Pat
and Alan RyplnskJ. They
were whisked into the tent
as Escada models paraded
the perimeter, exhibiting fab-
ulous fashion.
Artist Norman Wisdom
painted a backdfop in the
cocktail area of the tent that
was backlighted so guests
could witness a work in .
progress. It was only one of
the ma.rvelous details that
brought the Art of Dllling to
We. Lig~ting designers hung
spots from th~ rafters of the
tent, illwninating table cen-
terpieces of handblown glass
created by artist Caleb

tion.
Along with the Center's
Candelight Concert, which
unfolds at Christmastime, the
. Art of Dining ranks as the
party of the year on the
Orange Coast. The entrance
fee has grown from the early
days, when $150 per person
was requested, to a present
donation minimum of $1,000
per person. Many donors
contribute five-and even six-
figtµ"e swns as part of their
annual giving allotment.
Than.ks to the community
generosity, the Art of Dining
reaches and surpasses enor-
mous fund-raising goals,
contributing close to a half-
million dollars to the muse-
um each and every year.

!hree places to go for a taste of breakfast bliss
DllllG REVIEW
G rowing up, many of us
were told by our parents
and our teachers that
breakfast is the most important
meal of the day. The emphasis of a
good, hot break.fast could not be
overly stressed, and many of us
began our day with eggs, bacon or
sausage, toast, and fruit or fruit
juice -fuel for the upcoming day
ahead. As we grew older, eating
habits slowly begin to change; a
box of Fruit Loops along with Sat-
urday morning cartoons replaced
eggs and bacon, sugar now being
the primary'energy source.
A good breakfast has now
become a special event, a comfort-
ing link to a mpre leisurely past,
when a good cup of coffee could
be had for 50 cents, and ordering
didn't involve any knowledge of
foreign languages.
maybe the StuJt ~urfer (101 E. 15th
St .. Newport Beach, 1949) 673-
3696) is the'pJace for you. This out-
door-only eatery is oo the Balboe
Peninsula boardwalk, where lt
meets 15th Street. Diners order·
inside at the counter of this 30-
year-old esta'blJ.shment, and then
find a vacant table across the walk
on the sand. Tn.Uy al fresco, the
only way to dine closer to the •
waler would be with scuba gear.
Everyone Who's ev.er tried surf-
ing knows that it's a sport that
works up one's appetite, and the
breakfast burrito ($5.25) at the
Stuft Surfer is the perfect solution.
A large flour tortilla (if I saw an
unwrapped tortilla thts size with
metal spokes, I'd call it an umbrel-
la) is filled with scrambled eggs,
salsa, cheese and home-fried pota-
toes. U thdt isn't enough carbo-
loading to paddle through the big
stuff, a side of home fries accompa-
nies this monster burrito. The
homemade waffles are also good.
especially when topped with
berries and whipped cream
I bring my friends with kids
here often. It's the perfect family
spot: The kids get to play in the
sand, Dad can watch btk:i.ru-clad
skaters whizzmg by, and Mom can
feast her eyes on buff surfers head-
I still like to have a relaxing,
old-fashioned breakfast every now
and then; spending an hour in the
morning with a plate of eggs and
my paper feels like a well-earned
luxury after a busy workwee k. In
particular, there are a few places I
enjoy that not only feature rib-
sticking good food, but offer a
unique atmosphere and taste of
local culture as well.
GREG FRY I DAILY PILOT
Owner Brian White and his star empJoyee and daughter Joy Raneses show off the classic homemade
bacon, eggs and stack of pancakes breakfast at The Galley Cafe in Newport Beach. ing in from a mornmg's workout. ~
For more than 55 years, Cappy's
in Newport Beach (5930 W. Coast
Highway, Newport Beach, (949)
646-4202) has been serving local
patrons hearty breakfasts at rea-
sonable prices. The restaurant,
which is only open for breakfast
and lunch (except for Wednesdays.
when dinner is served until 10
p.m.), is perched on Coast High-
way among surf shops near the
Huntington Beach border.
Inside, a small bar, staffed from
opening at 6 a.m., serves Bloody
Marys to ease the hair of the dog.
Nautical murals cover most of the
walls, along with signed pictures of
local sports stars and celebrities
who have patronized the establish-
ment. Cappy's is a popular place,
and there is often a line on the
weekends, but the young. attrac-
tive staff is friendly and patient,
and the service is quick and effi-
cient.
Cappy's breakfast m enu is
extensive; there are more than 20
omelets, featuring fillings such as
sausage. pepper and cheese
($6.95) or a more vegetarian-
frlendly avocado and mushroom
($7 .95). The specialty at Cappy's,
however, is its country-fried steak
and eggs ($9.95). Often this dish a t
other restaurants is composed of a
barely chewable cut of beef heaVl-
ly battered and deep fned to a
greasy mess. At Cappy's, you'll
enjoy thin slices of prime rib, light-
ly washed in an egg batter and
quickly sauteed. The tender meat
i.s served atop rich gravy, along
with two eggs cooked the way you
like them and toast. A bottomless
cup of coffee completes this hearty
day-starter.
Members of the Newport Beach
boating com.muruty have long
enjoyed their breakfast at the Gal-
ley Cafe (829 Harbor Island Onve,
Newport Beach, (9491673-4110),
located on the corner of a marina
in exclusive Harbor Island. Ed
Flach, who preVlously worked at
The Arches, opened the Galley 46
years ago with his wife, Myrtle. Jn
fact, Myrtle Park across from the
restaurant is named for Ed's wife.
Today, Ed's grandson, Bnan. runs
the restdurant, and many of 'the
workers are also family members.
The Galley is a classic '50s diner,
complete with red leather booths,
Fonruca tables and a long counter
with swivel stools. Milkshakes are
still made by hand with fresh ice
cream, and sodas are still made
from syrups at the soda fountain.
The Galley is a great spot to
start the day; I like to daydream
over a cup of coffee about which
boat I'd like to own when I win the
lottery (or retire from my restaurant
critic earnings). Breakfast fare
includes all the usual beginnings,
such as a tall or short stack of fluffy
pancakes ($3.95 and $3.75, respec-
tively).
The specialty of the house is the
chili cheese omelet ($7.65), a tasty
mess of three eggs, nch brown
chih and ample cheddar cheese. U
boabng works up an appetite, then
thls dish is sure to cure it. And iI
the chili and eggs aren't enough,
you also get crispy hash browns
and a side of toast. As Chief Brody
said in ·Jaws": "I th.ink we need a
bigger boat.·
If the comer of a marina is still
too far from the water for you, then
Oh yes, and all whlle en1oymg the
fresh ocean air
All three places I've talked
about in this column have been
around for 30 years or longer, a
true testdment to the1I populanty,
servlce and good food. Most of us
can't eat this type of breakfast
every day. nor for that matter
should most of us. But when the
urge stnkes for the mother of all
comfort foods. Cappy's, the Galley
Cafe and the Stuft Surfer all deliv-
er the goods.
So treat yourself one of these
days, throw on your favorite old T-
shirt, your flip-flops. grab the
morrung paper and head off for
some hot coffee and a relaxing
hearty breakfast.

'Sum of All Fears ) gets high marks, while 'Earnest1fails
No 'Fears,' Jack
Ryan's back again
A re terrorists any
match for Ben Afflec\t
and Morgan Free-
man? There has been much
controversy surrounding the
new fihn "Sum of All Fears.#
In light of recent events, the
studios aren't sure if movie-
goers are
ready or
willing to
see films
involving
terrorism
and
bombs.
I went
in with a
positive
MELISSA outlook,
RICHARDSON thinking that Holly-
wood
would put a l.tght touch to
thmgs, the terrorists will have
a plan, but Affleck and Free-
mdn will be smarter, faster
and get the job done with a
bit of style and panache. Boy,
wds I wrong. ·sum of All
Fears· is engrossing, turbu-
lent and definitely high
unpact. The heart races and
nerves are tight.
fun as the meddling Cabot,
boss and bad-advice giver. It
is unfortunate and amusing
that Ryan listens to Cabot.
Yet, the characters are quick-
ly µpstaged by the action,
and the story line rambles 8
bit. United States' relations
with.Russia break down and
the tone switches almost
instantly from light to tense.
Then it's time to bold on
bght for a bumpy ride.
Affleck does an admirable
JOb with the heavy job of
playing Jack Ryan, although
~t was a bit hard to accept
characters addressing him as
"Dr. Ryan•; he just doesn't
seem old enough. Freeman,
who is always a gem, should
have been used more.
It is comforting that •sum
of All Fears" was not as
graphic as it could have
been. It would have been
nice if the plot was a bit
fuller and more clearly
explained, but such is the
regret with most action films.
There is a heaviness to this
film that hasn't been seen for
a long time. At the same time,
though, it is very interesting.
It doesn't have the bubble-
gum nature of "Spider-Man,·
or the fantasy aspect that
·Attack of the Clones· does,
but it is worthwhile. I highly
recommend it. It's disturbmg
and unsettling, but very good.
Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) is
back, younger this time and
bumbling. But a rogue
nucledr bomb is out and
about. The president's men
arn quick to blame the Rus-
sians. It's up to Ryan and his
boss William Cabot (Morgan
Freeman) to figure out what's
really gmng on before disas-
ter stnkes .•
• MELISSA RICHARDSON is a Cos-
ta Mesa resident and a junior at UC
Irvine.
White She Devil'(Denlse Richards), Sistah Girl (Aunjanue Ellis) and Undercover
Brother (Eddie Griffin) g e t ready to mix it up in "Undercover Brothe r."
The beginning of the
movie takes its time setting
up the characters and events,
which does get a bit conlus-·
mg and twisted. Freeman is

COSTA MESA -To the far left, a
young child expressed his love for his
dad. Under it, a lost loved one was
commemorated. A few feet away from
that, a Costa Mesa fire station proudly
marked its territory.
The band-decorated tiles that
adorn the exterior walls of the
restrooms at TeWink.le Park were offi-
cially dedicated to the city Wednesday
by the Leadership Tomorrow Class of
2001.
"This is a lasting contribution to the
community,• said Tom Egan, who was
the co-chairman of the Leadership
Tomorrow Class or 2001 project com-
mittee. •Those who contributed can
show off their art to their kids and
grandkids.•
Leadership Tomorrow,. is a nonprof·
it organization --...supported by fhe
chambers of commer<!e'in Costa Mesa,
Corona del Mar, Irvine and Newport
Beach -designed to develop leader·
ship by introducing participants to the
power base of the comm~ty. Each
class goes through the yearlong pro-
gram and culminates its experience
with a community project.
The project goals were to involve
the community and beautify the park
area in an effort to deter vandalism
and graffiti. More than 440 tiles were
painted and mounted around the
park's restroom area. Each tile carries
a different theme, from simple mes-

boles, but was obviously dis-

•Jett was particularly
concerned that this disquaW1-
cation be understood." said his
84-year-old father, Jack, a
member at Newport Beach for
30 years and whose golf-
playing membership was
taken over last year by his son,
who's preparing to leave for
Ireland.
"(Jeff) wanted to make sure
that people know he wasn't
cheating. He didn't intend to
do it. But those are the rules of
golf and he has to accept it.·
For Newport Beach head
pro Paul Hahn, it was one of
the toughest decisions he bas
ever had to make.
"It was a rough weekend
for the pro,· Hahn said. "I
don't like those things to
happen, but sometimes they
do. It was unfortunate that it
happened. Obviously Jeff's a
good player. I'm not saying be
wouldn't have won, and I'm
not saying he would've won,
but he's a good player.·
To confirm what Hahn
already knew in the rules, he
called Senior PGA Tour rules
official Skip Whittet, who was
in New Jersey for the NFL
Seniors Classic.
·1 wanted to make sure I
was doing the right thing,•
Hahn said. "With all the cir-
cumstances Involved, even
though I read the rule, it's
always good to get confirma-
tion from a higher source, like
the Senior PCA Tour.
·1 didn't sleep that night. It
was a tough decision on Jeff. I
hate to be put in that position
to make such a severe ruling
on Jeff, but the rules of goU
are there.•
There's always next year, of
course, for Jeff Wright.

captured championships in
1990, '93, Md '95, likely
secured an amateur spot in the
third annual Jones Cup (July 26
at Big Canyon Country Oub).
Whitaker, who would play
with Hahn in the pro-am
better-ball of partners in Jones
Cup lU, edged Kraft in a one-
hole playoff Saturday to win
the senior-division champi·
onship, then beat Kraft again
in the three-hole playoff
Sunday for the club champi-
onship.
Kraft, who played in the
inaugural Jones Cup in 2000,
and Whitaker were tied after
36 holes at 154 and tied again
after 54 holes at 228. Jim
Turner finished third and
Bruce Bearer fourth.
On the second playoff hole
Sunday, Whitaker's three-foot
putt hung around the lip
before falling in the cup, and
the drama continued on the
third extra hole (they played
Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the playoff).
On the par-5 No. 3,
Whitaker's wtnning birdie putt
aJso hung around the lip
before dropping in.
To tie Whitaker in
regulation, Kraft rolled in a 10-
foot birdie putt.
