I had a bnef internal conversation

When I walkedl back by, her food was
still untouched, and her head was down.
I walked back and sat in the lobby to
wait for my salad. I could still see her, and
her hedd was still down. I didn't know if
she was sad, or t.hinkmg or praying.
I thought about going over and say-

unmoved. I was still having an inner
mental debate when I remembered my

Pirates have eyes for State again
· Orange Coast appeares beaded for another Orange Empii'e

COSTA MESA -What does the
Orange C.oest College men's~
team do for an encore after itl state
runner-up linlsh last year? Well. so far
the Pirates are undefeated at 7..0, 3-0
in the Orange Empire Confenmce, u
all signs point to another state final
appearance for Coach Chuck
CUtenese's squad.
The Bucs, the defending OEC
d:lampiom who flnWled 21~2 last year,
have also somewhat avenged their
2001 state final loss to Los Angeles
Pierce. OCC defeated L.A. Pierce in a
one-game fonnat. 3().26, ln the Long
Beach Tournament, which gave the
Picates the tourney Utle Feb. 2.
•My goals for this team bas been to

'llly)Or, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, is a
coosistent force for the Pirates. wbUe
twin towers Scbnekkr and King stand
at 6-6 wtth ~an outside hitter
and King a middle blocker. Schnelder
earned MOit Valuable Player laurels at
tbe Long Beach Tournament. John
carnpbell is also a key returner who
is ln the mJddle, yet ls capable of
playing all po.sltions.
ln addition, Culenese collected
three transfers from lrvlne Valley
College, who have been contributing
greaUy this season. Sophomores Scott
Wmant, the team's starting setter, Greg
Font. the starting libero and 6-6 middle
blocker Atasb Vari caught on to OCC
while watching .the Pirates play in the
state final against LA. Pierce. After the
Bucs lost to Pierce. the trio introduced

standout Zach Jardine, wbo ha.a
NCAA OMsioo I talent. Cuteoeee takl.
Jardine, the 6-8 bead oppolite, has
been the Pirates' kW leader in three
matcbel thus far.
OCC's.. focus on lndlvfdual
improvement intensifies as the OEC

approaches. Last year, the Pirates
suffered a setback when their kill
leader, B.J. Ugbtvoet, injured bls
hilting hand. U such an injury occun
this year. Cutenese ls expecting bis
talented group of players to step up.
Rlvat Golden West will be much
improved this year and should be a

contend for the OEC title.
