A chill descended Monday

to block the sun over New-

The moon fell short of its goal and

Orange Coast College astronomy
students, partiopating in their hrst
night of an intense summer school

watched the sky darken and fell the
air grow colder as the moon con-
cealed the sun.
•Not bad for the first night of

A solar ecbpse takes place when
the Earth, sun and a new moon

new moon every month, but eclipses
happen less often because the
spheres are all on dtfferent planes,
he said.

PRO & CON
Students deserve a new Mariners library
I would like to commend the Newport·
Mesa Unified school board, the Newport
Beach City Council and Ubrary Board of
Trustees in developing the proposal for a
new Mariners library ("Mariners library
supporters meet goal," Thunday). A great
deal of time and effort has been given to
addressing educational needs while satisfy·
ing children's safety concema. It is encour·
aging to see this effective, working relation·
ship exiat between our elected and govern-
ing bodies.
Ju someone who was inJtrurnental in the
building of the original library facility, I ini·
tially questioned the benefitl of rebuilding
the Mariners library, it wu only after
exploring the proposed plan and current
resources available that I recognized that
thiJ ts the wile and appropriate course of
action.
Presently, many children have to go to
the Central Ubrary in order to obtain
important educational information and
recreational reading. While that is a won·
derful facility, it is not always easy for chil·
dren who live on this side of the bay to gain
access.
Mariners library also has serious parking
problems with strong competition between
recreation and sports activities in the adja·
cent park. This presentl dangerous safety
problems with children cro11ing the street
often between double-parked cars.
This library facility is beyond renovation
because of newer code requirements, lack
of infrastructure for electronic and audiovi·
sual use and probable asbestos removal.
Therefore, rebuilding is the only rea.Ustic
solution. Rebuilding in a location that ts
better suited for access for schoolchildren,
parents and teachers.
Most importantly, our school library is
Marian Bergeson
PRO
not equipped for the optimum educational
advantages the children of our community
deserve. The need for state-of-the-art
equipment and materialJ aligned with new
academic standarclt is obvious and is
dependent upon adequate infrastructure.
Joint-use makes sense when it can optimize
facility usage while being more cost eflec·
tive and secure in itl acce11 to 1tudent pop·
ulation during the school day. Th.ti lJ the
rationale behind the 1tate·bonding pro-
gram. '
I am dilmayed at the accu1at1on1 that
adult.I (predatora) will have ac:cet1 to vul·
nerable children during the 1chool day
under thil proposed plan. In reality, the
security 11 far better than we have at the
present time in either facility. Ju a parent
and a grandparent, 1afety ii of paramount
importance to me, 41 it ii to all parentl.
It is regretful that we live in an era when
bad things happen in just about every place
where children are present. With our fears,
however, we must not aacrUice the long·
tenn advantages of a strong foundation in
academic and literacy development. Ju a
community, we have long recogni%ed that
education and public safety a.re our highe1t
priorities.
Th.ti application addre11e1 both. We owe
thil to our 1tudentl, parents, teachera and
all of those that are committed to the better·
ment of coming generation1.

Jones admits there is little
carry-over between the two
sports, but leg strength and
