Julie McCormick said.
"[With) better family relations
among the family, what that trans-
lates into is more involved parents
at school and more part of the
school process,• McCormick said.
The eight-week classes involve
games such as charades, in which
family members act out feelings so
they will have an easier time com-
municating them. There is also
buddy time, in which a parent
from one family gets together with
a parent from another family. One
parent talks for seven minutes
while the other parent listens, and
vice versa.

only ones with the same problem.•
Then there is time for special play,
when the c:bildren spend time with

any activity they want without their
mothers telling them what to do.
The classes also include a men-
tal health consultant who asks the
parents to share their feelings
about their children over the past
week with them. The children sit
in the middle ol the circle as their
parents are talking about them and
then hug their parents afterward.
For parent Gaby Garcia. the
classes had a signific.ant effect OD
improving the self-esteem d her son

Independent
logo is not racist
T bis piece of wnting
requires a disclaimer.
Before you read any
further, you must understand
that I am not a racist. I hdve
never subscribed. do not
subscribe and will never sub-
scribe to the ignorance, mtol-
erance, stupidity and hate
that is racism. Now that
that's out of the way, I can
continue.
When I got to school on
Monday, I saw the fuers that
accused Independent of
using the racist iron cross dS
its logo (HCompany pulls
logo after Sailor protest,"
June 11). I immediately
began work on a rebuttal in
defense of lndependent I
know that Independent is not
a raost company. and I set
out to prove 1t.
I went to the Indy (ds
skaters l.tke me commonly
call Independent) Web site
and looked at the list or team
riders. I saw that more thdn a
dozen of the riders are not
white. Some are black, some
are Latino, some are Asian,
some Native Amencan and
some are Middle Eastern So
right away, I had proof that
Indy IS not a raost company.
It would not make sense for
so many people who aren't
wtute to ride for a company
that hates them, and it would
make even less sense for d
company that hates these
people to pay them to use
their products, wtuch include
skateboard trucks. hardware
and bearings.
After pnnting out that l.tst.
I sent an e-mail to Indepen-
dent, telling them about how
they were being accused of
spreading hate at my school
On Tuesday, I received an e-
mail back from Independent
telling me the origins of their
alleged "iron cross· logo.
It came from a photo m a
1978 nme magazine, m
which Pope John Paul II had
a similar cross on his robe. nus cross, which is round, is
called the glpbical cross. The
iron cross is a square cross.
The globical cross 1s much
more similar to the Indepen-
dent logo that the iron cross
is. The globicaJ cross is the
cross that inspired the Inde-
pendent logo. The logo was
not inspired by the iron cross,
AdoU Hitler, the Nazi party,
neo-Nazis. the neo-Nazi
swastika, racism, hate, igno-
rance or anything else like
that. It was inspired by a pic-
ture of the pope and the
cross he wore on bis robe.
I have a pin that I wear on
my jacket that has the word
"hate• crossed out on it. I
wear it everyday, and I
believe in what it says. When
I went home on Monday, I
grabbed my Independent
patch, which has a big Inde-
pendent cross on it, and
pinned lt onto my jacket with
my "no hate" pin. Why?
Because I have done my
homework, and 1 know from
extensive research that Inde-
pendent does not in any way
promote hate or racism. It
sells skateboard equipment
-skateboard equipment
that I use, by the way. The
Dashiell Collins
SOUNDING BOARD
people that accused Indy of
displaying an iron cross,
when in fact Indy did not,
did not do their homework
before they made their accu-
sation
lf they had wanted to get
theu message across the
nght wdy, they would have
tctlked to Independent and
found out why they use theu
logo, It ke I did. If Eric Weller,
Brandon Marshall and Wes
Pohlmann had done as much
res<.>Mch into Independent as
they did Into the history of
the iron cross, perhaps they
would not have accused
Independent of spreading
hdtc. and I would not be
wnt.mg this letter.
I dgree with what Eric,
Orandon and Wes are trying
to do, dnd I also want to
f'liminate hate in the-world.
But I don't throw out accusa-
llons without knowing all the
fact!> about the accused, as
the three Juniors who printed
the "stop the hate" flyers
dtd
Make no mistake. Hate IS
al.tve and well at Newport
Hd!bor High dnd m our com-
munity. A great number of
people dt my school wear
Independent shirts because
they think that the logo is
indeed an iron cross, which it
is not. These people wear the
rrusunderstood logo as a
symbol of hate, wtuch 1t 1s
not. They try to use the com-
pany to spread theu own
hate, and they nuss the point
entirely. They are also
unwill.tng to research the
meaning of the Independent
logo, as I did, and if they had
done their homework, they
wouldn't wear the logo
because they would realize
that it 1s not the symbol of
hate that they want to wear
It isn't a symbol of hate; 1t
isn't an uon cross. It ts a
round. globical cross, very
sirrular to the one used by
the Roman Cathotic Church.
U people are not willing to
research Independent and
are content with making mis-
informed accusations, whose
fault is that? It is certainly not
lndependent's. It 1s the peo-
ple's fault. The mformabon is

Mariners library discussion continues
AT ISSUE: Both the Newport Beach City Council and
Newport-Mesa Unified school board support the joint-use
proposal and have asked for state funding for the project.
A s the mother of two students
at Mariners Elementary
School, I am writing to voice
my concerns over the joint-use
library being considerE!d by the city
of Newport Beach and Newport-
Mesa Unified School District.
I am completely opposed to the
idea of locating a public library adja-
cent to the elementary school. The
school already is unsafe due to the
absence of any back fencing, which
, enables the public to enter the cam-
pus. This access will become com-
pletely unfettered wben the public is
invited to use what will essentially
be an on-campus fa cility.
Given the recently pubh.sbed
mformation that the state grant board
will give the same top priority to pro-
posals that do not include a joint pub-
lic/school library building, I cannot
understand the city's refusal to
explore tlus altemabve. It would ben-
efit everyone in the commuruty were
a state-of-the-art library built m the
exisbng library location and would
not create additional rlsk for students.
This also would be consistent with
the #Build a New Mariners Branch
Ubrary• advertisements, none of
which mention the joint-use idea or
the closure of the on-campu library.
l understand there are two more

opporturubes to subnut a proposal.
The city should explam why it's in
such a rush that 1t cannot consider
viable. safer alternabves.

As a parent of three Mariners Ele-
mentary School ctu.ldren, I wanted to
v01ce my support for the proposed
library ("Manners Llbrary proposal

think 1t will be fantastic for the stu-
dents of Mariners and for the com-
munity. I am satisfied with the safety
precautions that a.re being proposed
(the separation or the students from
the pu~lk during the day), and I do
not have any additional concerns. I
hope we can make this a reality .
