County officials have expressed

have seen a full accounting, they
will be assured that none of the
money was mishandled.
It was not a big surprise when
Mayor Tod Ridgeway and City

announced they would run for

improvements as priorities for the
coming term.

ARRESTS
AFTER I YEAR
Costa Mesa police on Wednes-
day arrested three men in connec-
tion with a failed armed robbery in
a South Coast Plaza jewelry store
more than a year ago, officials said.
Raul Camacho Dorado, 26 and
Antonio Alejandro Deltoro, 28.
both of Santa Ana, and Angel
Uriostegui, 29, of Irvine, were
arrested on suspicion of attempt·
ing the robbery at 1iffany and Co.
the night of May 8, 2001 , said
Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney.
The arrests PUILIC Wednesday were a
SA' ET' result of a year-long
investigation that led
detectives to Uriostegui, who was
employed as a security guard at
the jewelry store at the time of the
incident, Birney said.
He was not ln the store the night
the alleged incident happened, but
palice said be was found to be
involved with the other two men in
planning the robbery.
On May 8, 2001, at about 9:15
p.m., Dorado and Deltoro allegedly
acx:osted two employees who were
leaving the store after it was locked
up, police said. They pointed a
handgun at the employees, led
them back to the store and asked
them to open it, but a security
guard who was inside the store
refused to let them in and called for
assistance. Birney said.
Dorado and Deltoro then ran
from the scene and one of them
droppetl his weapon while running
and was forced to stop to pick it
up, be said. They left the scene
and were not apprehended, Birney
said. All three men were booked
into the Costa Mesa jail with baft
set at $50,000. Dorado and
Uriostegui bailed out Thursday.

How did "Pomp and Cir-
cumstance" become the offi-
cial graduation song across the
land? It all started at Yale ln
1905. British composer EJgar
-that's Sir Edward Elgar to
you, thank you -was a big
deal, superstar in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. He
composed a boatload Qf music,
but is best remembered for his
ceremonial works: proces-
sions, fanfares, etc. It's all very
formal and stuffy to our ears,
but then, so w~ the people
back then.
Sir Eddie had an Americdll
pal named Samuel Sanford
who was a professor of music
at Yale. It's a shame he didn't
teach at Stanford. Then he'd
be Professor Sanford from
Stanford. OK. forget that.
In 1905, Samuel arranged
for SU' Edward to receive an
honorary doctorate from Yale.
At the commencement cere-
mony on June 28, the Yale
orchestra performed ·Pomp
dild Circumstance" as a llib-
ute to Sir Edward. People
went bonkers. They were
dappmg and whistling and
shoutmg, "You dd' mdO,
Eddie, you da man!" OK. not
exactly, but they really liked it
Yale started using "Pomp and
Cirrumstance" for its gradua·
tion processional the very next
year and soon everyone
jumped on the bandwagon.
Not useless enough for
you? Wait. there's more. Do
you know there are lyrics to
"Pomp and Circumstance?"
Don't feel bad. Neither does
anyone else. Sir Edward asked
a British poet named Christo-
pher Benson to pen a few
lines to go with "Pomp.• You
think the music is stuffy? ny

that you never, ever, ever get

someone forwarded to them.
No matter what you're told, no

I hate to go against my own

that you can actually use.
Whenever you get one of
these semi-hysterlcal, dooms-

your little mouse will take you.
You'll find all the latest virus

Speaking of water, if you
buy bottled water because it's
convenient, drink up. But if
you buy it because you think
it's safer, save your money.
California drinking water

has fewer contaminants than
about 60% of bottled waters.
And no matter how thirsty
you are, never buy anything
over the phone or on televi-

infomercial.
If you can buy it over the
phone or on TV, you don't
need it. When is the last

buy one of those rotisseries

the ads that offer •11.000 min-
utes for $39.95 a month.•
Check the fine print. It'll say
something like "16,400 night

you will never, ever use.
What else? Be the best per-

exactly how you'd like to be
treated, learn how to cook and
always keep a can of chicken

are most known for
unearthing the solution to a
problem that almost prevent-
ed the existence of Corona
del Mar State Beach.
Jn the 1940s, when the
area was known only as
Corona del Mar Beach and
owned by Citizens Bank in
Los Angeles. the state issued
a park land bill that promised
matching futlds to cities that
wanted to create a state
beach, according to James
Felton's "Newport Beach, The
First Century, 1888-1988. •
Pease wanted Corona del
Mar Beach -which was then
pnvate -to become a public
state beach, and she influ-
enced both the state and the
aty m a deal that would
involve swapping city land for
the beach. But Citizens Bank
didn't want to give up their
hold on the beach and make
the property public, for profit
reasons. So a City Council
heanng WdS held.
Enter Newport Beach City
Attorney Roland Thompson.
He told the counol that the
city could not give property to
another political organization,
which meant the ~late would
be out of luck.
Mary Burton, an attorney,
disclgreed and informed lhe
counoJ lhdt the aty could
hand over property to the
state, Felton's book says.
Mary A. Wood
The heming was continued.
But Burton discovered
something that was obstruct-
ing the whole matter of
acquiring the beach. Her hus.
band Phil Burton, who was
with the Los Angeles County
Flood Control District, was .
'busy working on a case in
Glendale that involved Cit1·
zens Banlc. •
He stum-
bled upon
a letter that
showed
that
Thompson,
Newport's
city attor-

represent-

Mary

interests when he argued m
front of the City Council on
the beach matter.
The ladies got their way
and the beach eventually
became a state beach, which
it remams to this day.

There are many more
questions you could be asking
yoursell. The important thing
is to ask them -don't let this
milestone slip away without
making it meaningful.
The parents, family and
friends of graduates also
should be encouraging this
inlrospection, just as you've
encouraged the learning and
maturing that has led our
Class of 2002 to this point.
Your importance will not dis-
appear just because a tassel
got moved across a mortar-
board (you might even find
yourself playing a bigger
part). Here is the opportunity
to consider how your role
needs to change or evolve as
this graduating dass headi
into adulthood.
One final thought, during
a time when so many words
are tossed about football sta-
diums and auditoriums.
Graduallon speakers like to
talk about the meaning of
"commencement," how
rather than graduation
being an end, it is a begin-
ning. To everyone who's
heard one of those speeches
this year, don't let that valu-
able point become lost in
the abundant rhetoric.
Instead, make this com-

Now, thctt choice is in jeop-

the obvious fix to the problem.
Sandoval -a former Pilot

It should not have to

I enjoyed the fireworks ("Newport

best in the whole world. It was so
beautilul. I think people shouldn't
be so jumpy about earthquakes and
hurricanes and all that stuff because
we hear so much of it on the news
media. This was truly a blessing it
was so beautiful. Yeah, my windows
rocked and I Jumped up to see what

Th.is is regarding the fireworks
display on Sunday, June 9, off the
coast of Cameo Shores, where my
husband and l live.
At exactly 9:50 p.m .• this tremen-
dous noise jolted us. The hous~ and
walls literally seemed to expand and
contract sharply. My next door neigh-
bor was away. I immediately feared
that something in her house had
exploded. We ran outside to see the
damages, and then saw the fireworks.
My daughter Uves about a mile
up Coast Highway on Marguerite
Avenue. She and her neighbors also
immediately raced outside and
thought terrorists were bombing the
shore, or that there was gunfire.
Th~ they too saw the fireworks.
My understanding is that none of
us were notified of this display, and
it occ:wred very late at night. This is
scary, thoughtless and unnecessary.
We all enjoy fireworks, but we
want to be notified and feel they
should happen earlier in the
evening. This was a very frightening
experience. not the least because of
the very loud •booming• kind of
fireworks. which should be elimlnat-
ed au together.
We deb.nitaly feel the city should
reconsider th• policy and not allow
thete late night ftnrworkt displays,
particuJarly wtthout any public
notice.

David Foel, who has known
Kanzler since grade school and
now owns a construction com-
pany, donated the materials
and manpower needed to
make the Kanzler home
wheelchair-friendly.
Foel is overseeing the mas-
sive project that calls for a
paved backyard patio and
removing a couple of walls so
the garage can be moved for-
ward to accommodate a larger
bedroom and bathroom.
"When you see your friend
needing help and you're in a
position where you are capable
to provide insight and help,
you step up and do what you
can when you can,• Foel said.
Childhood friends Andy
Wolfe and Steve O'Daly take
turns stretching Kanzler's legs
and back. His muscles still
work, Wolfe explained, they
1ust don't take orders. Wolfe
and O'Daly help their friend to
exercise his muscles and bend
bJ.s joints so they won't atrophy. ·u·s the most important
thing I do,• Wolfe said.
Nelgbbor Tom Casey also
stops by the house to perform
small chores, such as taking
out the trash or simple handi-
work, which have become
obstacles for Kanzler. Fonner
nelghbor Kent Barkouros
donated a state-of-the-art·
device, similar to a wheelchair,
that allows Kanzler to move
around in a standing position.
• tt'1 not a handout, it's just a
hand becaUM we can,• Poel
said.

it was hard to "eat humble

realized his friends were help-
ing because they wanted and
needed to. They needed to
take action to help the family
deal with the tragedy of watch-
ing such a close friend go from
an extremely active lifestyle to
the confines of a wheelchair.
•If 1 didn't let them, 1 would
be denying them the gratifica-
tion of helping me," Kanzler
said. "It's been really nice for
them to feel like they have
been able lo help.•
While the paralysis has
required Kanzler to accept
help, lt has not changed his
independent spirit, his friends

possible.
Kanzler has a long road of
recovery but has no doubts he
will make it, given the support

SPOTLIGHT
Getting sultry, Spanish style
Summer nights deserve a
little heat. And while the
weather is not cooperating,
the dance troupe Noche Aa-
menca will do its best to
bring some sultry style into
the summer starting Thurs-
day at the Orange County
Performing Arts Center.
Noche Flarnenca, started
in 1993 by Artistic Director
Martin Santangelo and his
wife, h ails. from Madrid,
Spain. The flamenco troupe
is highly regarded interna-
tionally, earning acclaim from
reviewers at both the New
York Times and the San
Francisco Examiner.
Among the flamenco
artists that have worked and
continue to work with the
company are Soledad Barrio,
Belen Maya, Alejandro .
Granados, Antonio VlUUTa-
ga, Rafael Jimenez Falo and
Rediscovering a
Jones for 'Raiders'
David Serra.
The Center performance is
being sponsored in part by
George and Julia Argyros.
George Argyros is the Amer-
ican ambassador to Spain.
"The culture and history
of this magnificent country is
extraordinary, and flamenco
is certainly one of its signa-
ture art forms," Julia Argyros
said. "One of the most effec-
tive ways for us to gain a
greater app1eciation of each
other and this marvelously
diverse world we share is
through our art and culture."
