NEWPORT-MESA -Com-
munity members reacted with
shock and disbelief at a federal
appeals court decision Wednes-
day that, for the first time ever,
declared the Pledge of Alle-
giance unconstitutional because
of the words "under God·
added by Congress in 1954.
The ruling, if upheld, means
schoolchildren can no longer
recite the pledge, at least in the
nine Western state~ covered by
the court. In a 2-1 decision. the
9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal
said the phrase amounts to a
government endorsement of
religion in violation of the Con-
stitution's Establishment Clause,
which requires a separation of
church and state.
¥A profession that we are a
nation 'under God' is identical,
for Establishment Clause pur-
poses, to a profession that we are
a nation 'under Jesus,' a nation
'under Vishnu,' a nation 'under
Zeus,· or a nation 'under no god,·
because none of these profes-
sions can be neutral with
respect to religion,• Judge
Alfred T. Goodwin wrote for the
three-judge panel.
The Establishment Clause
refers to the beginning of the 1st
Amendment of the Constitution,
which states. ·congress shall
make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or pro-
hibiting the free exercise there-
of."
Richard Menees, associate
rector at St. James Episcopal
Church on Via Lido in Cannery

at the court's decision.

\ Hearing on judge race set for today lllEFLY II
Tiii IEWS
·•A Costa Mesa attorney has asked the court to put her
name on the November ballot, replacing a Superior Court
official accused of child molestation.
LoUt. Harper
• DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -A Costa Mesa
attorney will be paying close atten.
tion to a court ruling today that
could detennine whether her name
will be adde.d to the November bal-
lot for a Orange County. Superior
Court judgeship election.
The hearing -scheduled at 1 :30
p.m. today m the Central Division of
Orange County Superior Court in
• Santa Ana -is the latest hurdJe in
attorney Gay Sandoval's path to
unseat Superior Court Judge
Ronald C. Kline.
Kline faces charges of child
molestation and child pornography.
and is now under house arrest as a
: result of those accusations.
• Sandoval waged her uphill bdttle
• to defeat the besieged judge as soon
as she learned or the charges, say-
ing she wanted to send a message
to Orange County children that vot-
ing adults would not just sit back
and let an accused child molester
keep an elected position.
As a result of her efforts to mount
the write-in campaign. the prelimi-
nary race was opened to 11 chal-
lengers.
The combination of challengers
kept Kline from winning a majority
of votes in April, forcing the Novem-
ber runoff. It also prompted Kline to
request that his name be removed
from the November ballot.
His wish was granted last week,
leaving write-in candidate John
Adams -who was the lead vote
getter in the primary, just ahead of
Kline -as the only candidate m the
race for Superior Court Judge
Office No. 21 .
Sandoval was the third-place
vote-getter.
Now, what start-
ed as a crusade for
the children has
turned into a quest
for choice, as San-
doval turns her b?t-
tle Crom the cam-
paign trail to the
courtroom in an
Gay effort to get her
Sandoval name addep to the
ballot.
"The voters need a choice,• San-
doval said.
Sandoval, a former Daily Pilot·
columnist, said she asked the regis-
trar's office to put her name on the
ballot along with Adams but was
told she needed a court ruling. Tern
Niccum, spokeswoman for the reg-
JStrar's office confirmed that, Sdying
a legal entity would have to deter-
mine the matter.
•As I understand it, we don't
have any power to put someone Ion
the ballot) unless a judge has man-
dated it," Niccum said.
Sandoval began the legdl pro-
ceedings. basing her legal chal-
lenge on an elecbon code section
that she says calls for the next high-
est vote-getter to fill d ballot vacan-
cy for a nonpartisan oft1ce.
Adams received 33.2% of the
vote. foUowed closely by Kline at
32% and Sandoval earned 10.8%.
With Kline's successful removal
from the ballot, Sandoval secures
lhe spot as the second-highest vote-
getter.
AddJTls said he has not seen
Sandoval's formal request and
would reserve comment unW he
reads It. ·
If voting stdbstics don't make a
strong case for her, the amount of
effort she has put into the campaign -
should be taken into consideration,
Sandoval said. After all, Kline's
name would never have appeared
on the ballot to gJVe voters the
chance to wnte m other alterna-
tives.
"I was the flrst one to get him on
the bdllot, 1 was successful m gel-
ling him off the ballot, but now the
ballot has a hole m 1t, and that hole
has to be filled,• Sandoval said.

DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -The Newport-
Mesa Uruhcd School D1stnct's 2002-
03 budget. adopted Tuesday
everung, can be summed up in ,one
word: tentative.
District oHicials were quick to
pomt out that the $158-nullion pro-
posed budget is subject to change
when the results of a handful of
unknown Vdnables are revealed.
"There dTC a lot of unknowns out
there,• said school board trustee
Martha Fluor. "The big word is 'if.••
The biggest -and most influen-
bal -vanable IS the troubled state
budget. Paul Reed, the district's
assistant superintendent of busmess
services, said the pretimincUy bud-
get was compiled based on the best
information available -wluch is
not much.
"The dilemma 1s: When the
school board acts, 1t can only dct on
what is reasonably certdm and the
California Legislature 1s far from
reasonably certain di this Ltme,"
Reed said.
The 2002-03 budget's spendmg
is up about $17 million from ldst
year and antiapates a moderdte l ",.,
increase in revenue from the dver-
age daily attendance and 7"1 ..
increase in property laxes. Expens-
es include a previously agreed upon
3.5% compensation hike for cerll-
fied employees and a 2.5'X, mcredse
for classilied positions, Reed sdid.
The district must also account for
the ever-increasing cost of benefits,
an item that has risen 22'V., over last
year's budget. One-time expenses,
such as equipment replacement and
technology updates. are also includ-
ed, Reed said.
The tentative budget shows
expenses slightly more thdfl rev-
enue at $3.2 million, but Reed sdld
the district wouJd be able to balance
that with $10.1 million in unspent
funds from last year. .
Reed said the 2002-03 budgt>t u.
a conservative "snapshot m tune.·
Although tunes dre uncertain, the
budget IS balanced and there are no
rnt.s tn programs.
"Tlus budget conllnues the level
of service that people are accus-
lomed to and tmproves 1l wherever
possible with some prudence."
Reed SdJd
If a i.econd word were needed to
de!>cnbe the budget, it would be
"conscrvdt1ve. •
Reed said the budget does not
presume any income that the dis-
tnct does not know will be there. It
also presumes that every expense in
the budget will be spent -which is
almost never the case -and still
forecctSts a reserve of $6.9 million,
he Sdid.
Flour said she u. comfortable the
dlslnct IS not headed for cns1s. The
trustee said the loorrung state prob-
lems worry her because of the
potential effect they may have on
the state as a whole but 1s confident
Newport-Mesa schools will weather
the storm.
The district operates under a
"dual adoption cycle" and w11J
rev1s1t its fmanc1al forecast in Sep-
tember with a more realistic picture,
Reed said.
·Lots of things will change by the
b.rne the final budget 1s presented for
adoption m SeptPmber, • Reed said.
The school board also approved
the d1stnct's te nlallve budget, total-
ing d bit more thdn $144 million. As
it stands, the budget is balanced
with expenditures of less than $143
million.
More l?Cations where the public :
may view the report may be .
added. :
After the public review, the :
matter will go to the Planning
Commission, wluch will consid-
er a request to include a nearly
124-foot steeple on the temple.
All other elements of the pro-
ject are wttlun et ty guidelines,
though some, such as bwlding
color and tighbng, have caused
concern among neighbors. The
report shows that the visual
effect of the temple on the
neighborhood is •1ess than sig·
nificant. • Effects on traffic, as
well as water ·and air quality, is
also determined by the report to
be ·1ess than sigruflcant, •
though it's likely some residents
will disagree.

Now even bigger mansions
are begmning to follow. The
best examples are m gated
communities, but the VlTUS is
spreading rapidly.
A recent artide in the Los
Angeles Times Magazine
titled "Uving Ever Larger•
took a look at how this dis-
ease affects society on a
broader scale. It quoted a
French anthropologist who
has been analyzing the
American consumer for two
decades as saying: "It's a cul-
ture of excess, a permanently
nouveau riche mentality. We
want the biggest, the most
extreme of everything.•
Robert Shelton says there
are other reasons too. He is
chairman of a citizens' advi-
sory committee named by the
Newport Beach City Council
to help identify critical issues
for the council to consider in
updating the general plan.
Mansionization is high on
that list. But the motivations
Shelton's committee is hear-
ing for our incipient mansion
ghettos go well beyond mere
ostentation.
The chief complaint
brought up against mansion-
lzation ta that it changes the
character of a neighborhood
simply by its size. A three·
story home with an elevator
on Balboa Island is as out of
keeping with its surround-
ings as the mini-mansion I
pass every day in my walk.
Other complaints: Such over-
sized homes block light and
create a much denser com-
munity.
Beyond just showing off
existing wealth, the mail)
motivation for mansion.l.i:ing
appears to be the production
of new wealth. Longtime
.homeowners -especially
those on fixed incomes -
profit by upgrading the site or
creating income property by
renting half of the new struc-
ture. And contractors, who
are understandably pushing
this sort of thing, profit from
the remodels or from buying
a property, tearing down the
house on it and filling up the
lot with a mansion.
Accord.mg to •uving Ever
Larger,· while the size of the
typical American family has
decreased by 20% during
the past three decades, typi-
cal new homes are 55o/e larg-
er than the average home
built in 1970. Notes the
anthropologist quoted earli-
er: "When do you have
enough 1n America? Never!"
But local residents upset
by mansionization are now
saying, "Enough.• Which
poses some problems for the
people making the laws in
Newport Beach. The main
device for controlling man-
sion.ization is adjusting the
ratio between the floor area
and the size of the lot. Cut-
ting it back would eliminate
a lot of the monsters now
being crammed into small
lots. It would also offend
those who reqard property
rights as sacrosanct.
The best solution, of
course, is a combination of
sociat awareness. good taste
and sensitivtty to surround-
ings among the homeowners
and contractors who design
and bwJd these monstel'S.

NEWPORT BEACH c1n COUNCIL WRAP·UP .
J
Inside
CITY HALL
Here are some of the
decisions coming out of the
Newport Beach City Council
meeting on Tuesday.
NOT SO EZ LUBE
WHAT HAPPENED:
A controversial request
to build an EZ lube in Coro-
na del Mar did not get its
day in chambers as expect-
ed. Though council mem-
bers were prepared to con-
sider the request Tuesday
night. the matter was post-
poned at the applicant's
request. EZ Lube has asked
the council to reconsider
the Planning Commission's
decision to deny the com-
pany a permit to build a
2,641 ·square-foot auto ser-
vice facility at 3600 E. Coast
Highway. The Planning
Commission had shot down
the request because, they
believed, the business
would not fit in well with
the neighborhood. .
WHAT IT MEANS:
The matter is scheduled
to come before the council
at its Aug. 27 meeting.
TRAFFIC SIGNALS
WHAT HAPPENED:
A S303, 759 contract to
improve some traffic sig-
nals in the ci~ ~ sailed throug the council on
Tuesday. Con-
tractor F.J .
Johnson won
the contract to improve
traffic signals on Jamboree
Road at Eastbluff Drive-

Fourth of July won't
~be without its fanfare : rr here will be no : .! Fourth of July fire-
• -works at the New-
• p0rt Dunes next
: ~eek. Newport Beach City
: fylanager Homer Bludau
• and company sought a cou-
: ple of options to replace the
: pyrotechnic display, but
unfortunately came up
empty.
But city officials definite-
ly tried.
, They tried to resurrect
·the show at the Dunes, but
, neithe r the Dunes nor the
: fompany that put on the
·fireworks event wanted a
part of it. Liability issues,
which caused Dunes offi-
cials to drop the show in
the first place, led the fire-
works company to pass as
well.
The city considered
igniting the display from
the wate r, either at one of
• the piers or from a barge,
:.but that proved unwise in
.Mlat it would draw e xtra .-=~tors to an already busy
:lalboa Peninsula.
:: And, to further shut out
·~e possibility of sparking a
display near the peninsula,
the Police Department
pointed out that its officers
are already a bit too busy
on the Fourth of July
patrolling the West New-
port area to monitor anoth-
er bustling crowd.
It is a shame, especially
as patriotism flourishes in
our nation, that an alterna-
tive display could not be
created to replace the
Dunes fireworks, but resi-
dents are not without their
options.
In fact, look no further
than the city's neighbors.
Costa Mesa hosts a
magnificent fireworks dis-
play at O range Coast Col-
lege's Le Bard Stadium.
Both Huntington and
Laguna beaches also host
fireworks shows, as d o sev-
erdl other cities throughout
the county .
So sure, it won't be the
same as having it al the
Dunes, but there are other
options lo cele bra te our
nation's independence at a
time when we all feel a
need to do exactly that.

respect to

of the

have been
very
pleased to
be considered as a polentiaJ
reop1ent of property on the

County Fair & Exposition
Center has been identified as
a possible partiopant on the
EJ Toro Marine Base is both
exciting and encouragmg.
When the fair was men-
tioned, however, many peo-
ple jumped to the conclusion
that relocation was unminent.
That is just not the case.
ll we are included in the
final El Toro plan, we would
be most pleased. Our first
step would be to focus on
those programs, such as
-111e Ranch, -that we are
prohibited from providing
here due lo space restrictions
and lack of equestrian trails.
We would next look to see
how we could provide addi-
tional community programs
at that location. It would be
our desire to see how we
could use any asset provided
to the fair for the full benefit
of our community.
In our 100-year history in
the CO\Ulty, the fair has served
as a community resource, offer-
ing se?Vices, entertainment and
educatiooal programs. This
mission will continue to remain
strong for another century, and
with that we hope to continue
to build a strong and respectful

Orange Coast College will
try to extend swap meet
I t's interesting that Orange Coast
College speaks of canceling some
of its arts program if it can't have
a swap meet two days a week (#No
more drama at Orange Coast Col-
lege,• Monday). Maybe the college
officials realize that our mayor is a
dedicated patron of the arts and
they're just trying to win her
approval.
Subsidized programs and perfor-
mances? Definitely not for the regu-
lar ticket-buying public.
I was surprised how much they
wanted me to pay to see these per-
ronners, who were either on their
way up or on their way down in their
careers. 1 mean how much is some-
one willing to pay to heaI Rosemary
Clooney, Florence Henderson or the
latest tour of Forever Plaid?
The college should probably
admit that those high-cost regular
ticket prices also help subsidize the
cost to seniors and children, which,
by the way, is perfectly OK with
me.

Newport Coast addition
may have its faults
I have very much enjoyed your
recent addition of history notes of
Newport Beach (Sundays). May I
add to your storehouse of knowl-
edge?
Between 1974 and 1978, it was
my privilege to serve on behall of the
dty of Newport Beach on the Local
Agency Formation Commission. In
that role as a City Council me mber, I
sat with the cities of Irvine and Lagu-
na Beach in discussion of down coast
annexation.
Gabnel Pryor was an excellent
mayor of Irvine at that time. She was
an extre mely able and strong-mind-
ed person who represented the d ty
of Irvine in its ardent search for •a
window to the sea.• As I recall, it
was the city's intent to run Culver
Drive through the hills to the Pacific.
She, like me, had maternal duties.
She le ft a meeting early in order to
take a child to d cello lesson. It was
at that meeting when we voted for
#spheres of mnuence. • She would
have been a fomtidable foe on this
issue. Only because of her absence
was I able to gdmer two votes to put
down coast into the sphere of innu-
e nce of Newport Beach.
There are times when I think I
erred.
Incidentally, your reporter on the
Newport Beach budget cites ·the
nearly $5 million in property taxes
expected from the recenUy annexed
Newport Coast will offset big. losses
in hotel and sales truces.· It is wise to
look at both the income and expen-
dtture sides of a oty budget. What
will Newport Coast cost in addtbonal
servtces -police, hre, trdsh, street
cleaning, park maintenance, a
branch llbrdry, commuruty center,
etc.
Will the $5 million cover the cost?

I appreciate everything the Costa

to learn there had been a fatality at
Estancia High Sch ool. Wlule
attempting to drive to my destina-
tion, lo a friend's home in that area of
Costa Mesa, J was told by someone
representing the Costa Mesa Police
Department 1 could not drive on Pla-
centia Avenue . When I asked why,
she told me, "There has been a fatal-
ity at the high school. -
When 1 am ved at my desbnation
(via another route), my friend's son
phoned the school and discovered
there was no fatality fortunately, but
there was a reenactment or a drunk-
driving accident designed to scare
the students.
ApparenUy, there was not much
thought given as to what the reaction
of the public would be when they
were told by a pollce officer a threat-
ening false reason for the barricaded
street. It's akin to yelling Ure Ln a
crowded theater or crying woll.

Disability unnoticed in

I wanted to respond to your great
artide about 'TTavis Jokumsen
("Sense for the game." June 17).
I was the assistant coach for the
Reds in the Mustang division. Travis
was our umprre on numerous occa·
sions and he was undoubtedly the
best umpire we had. Superb. Just a
joy to be with. The kids really
enjoyed him. He dlways made good
calls, 1 thought. ·
The thing that gets me about
ltavis most is that he has what many
people perceive to be a disability
and yet he is above board the best

and just makes everybody comfort-

Step into the Omelette Parlor and be happy
DINING REVIEW
9Y Kathy M•der
G ood breakfasts in Uus
town are not really hard
to come by. Really good
breakfasts, though, are a little
more difficult to find. The
Omelette Parlor rn Costa Mesa
serves a really good breakfast
consistently and every day.
That's about as good as break-
fast gets.
The Omelette Parlor 1s on
17th Street, back by Chester
Drawers, and anyone who
spent their early 20s m this
town knows exactly where that
is. In fact, the Omelette Parlor
shares an entry wtlh Chester

very early morning busmess. I

Yeah, you can get "l Love

It's all there. Try the "World

The Omelette Parlor has a

REEL CRITICS
'Minority Report' looks familUlr; 'Scooby Doo' an unlikely tale
Too much going on i!1 'Minority Report' 'M inority Report" is the story of a sophisticated
· criine-flghting company
named Pre-Crime. 'Pre-Crime iden-
tifies future murders and is there-
fore able to pre-
vent the actual
crime in its ·pre"
stage. The com-
pany has been in
place in Wash-
ington, D.C. for
the last six years
and, in that time
they have not
had one murder.
JOAN ANDRE The company
works by using
the brctin power of flawed humans.
ll seeks out children born with a
~enetic flaw that allows them to
have an extraordinary degree of
precoynilion. Pre-Crime adopts
them for training and development
111 the company. The "precogs" are
t!)Olctted and trnined to serve only
Pre-Crime. They "see" a future
rnurder, let their handlers know.
a,nd a tf'am is dispatched lo arrest
the murderer before a crime can be
rnmmi lied.
• The director of this system 1s
Ldrnar Burgess (Max van Sydow),
uncJ the lectde r is Paul Anderton
/Tom Crui!>e). The federal govern-
111ent has just expressed an interest
111 nalionctlizing the system. Coinci-
dentally, Anderton has 1ust been
<1ccused of pre-committing a mur-
der, so he must escape and brave
ctll the high-tech police to prove he
was framed.
tbe viewer t:Us jaded concept. In
both movies prior to •Minority
Report," the future was painted as
a dismal place with overpopulated
cities, crowded living space and no
green pastures or country living.
This view ls a bit betfer.
I fell the movie was equal to the
star power -the whole movie, not
just the story line. It is also worth-
while to note that there is an intri-
cate whodunit running in the back-
ground that has tentacles to draw
from all aspects of the movie and is
very, very good about how it dis-
tributes its clues.
This movie is definitely futuris-
tic, high-tech stuff. I think l might
rent it when it comes out on DVD.
"Minority Report ~ is rated PG-13
for violence, brief language, some
sexuality and drug content.
•JOAN ANDRE, "over 65." is a Newport
Beach resident who does a lot of volunteer
work.
'Scooby Doo' suffers
from credibility issues
When you think of "Scooby
Doo," you think of the cute, outspo-
ken Great Dane
ttiat helps his
friends solve
mysteries in the
oddest sort of
ways. You have
to think, •How
could such a
group be so suc-
cessful?" But
then you realize
that all this stuff
is make-believe,
friends that form Mystery Inc.,
including the handsome Fred
(Freddie Prinze Jr.), the damsel-
like Daphne (Sarah Michelle Cel-
lar), the brainy Velma (Ll.I)da Car-
denllini), the clueless Shaggy
(Matthew Lillard), and of course,
Scooby. Togetherl while being in a
-dispute with one another, they try
to solve the evil plot that has com-
menced on Spooky Island, an
amusement park geared toward
college students.
In time, as the students leave
Spooky Island, they seem to have
completely changed in personality.
This is where the former Mystery
Inc. tries to help. In other words,
they try to push everyone out of the
picture and each works out the
mystery by themselves. It doesn't
end like this, for they end up for-
giving each other and wor!fing
together to figure out who the mas-
termind is.
This story line doesn't sound
very convincing to me, for the way
they go about it is obviously
planned. U the action was gone
about in another way, the movie
would have more purpose.
Even so, the movie did have its
entertaining moments. The comedy
of Shaggy and Scooby was one of
the highlights of the movie. And
even with the rest of the characters,
there was disguised humor.
It seemed that each member had
their own uniqueness, which was
constant throughout the movie.
Velma had her brains, Daphne had
bet damsel-ness, Fred had his lead-
ership, and Shaggy and Scooby
had their comedy. It made the
movie seem realistic.
Steven Spielberg has spared
nothing in the high-tech arena.
There is a whole Sharper Image
'l'.1ltctlog going on in the nooks and
-crannies: Little spider guys scan-
mng eyes; Pre-Crime police being
transported by jet propulsion; trans-
portation pods running up, down
and around buildings.
"Minority Re port," starring Tom Cruise, is in theaters now. and the writers make it so that
everything turns out happy in the
end.
"Scooby Doo" is a movie that is
funny in its own sense, but it doesn't
really have a point to it. It's more of
a cartoon made in reality. It has its
laughs, and all together, that's the
one thing you get out of it.
There is a lot going on and 1
wonder if there just is not too much
going on. Most of the movie lS
devoted to Anderton's escape and
showing of( the new toys. Sooner or
later you are brought back to "Total
Recall" and "Blade Runner" and
remember why this au looks famil-
iar.
ties and philosophies, each of
which need a fair share.of discus-
sion time. Does knowing the future
mean you can change it? Are you
guilty of murder if no murder has
occurred?
The other lilrns adopted from
story lines by Philip K. Dick offer
Don't get me wrong, Scooby and
his pal, Shaggy, are two of a kind.
But how does a group that splits up
and then meets again two years lat-
er. still mad at each other, solve a
mystery involving some evil mas-
termind? I think it's very unlikely.
"Scooby Doo" is rated PG for
some rude humor, language and
some scary action.

THEATER
ly Tom Titu~
T here are people you
encounter who effec-
tively change the
course of your life merely by
their presence in it. For me,
one of those people was Pati
Tambelllni.
Pati did more than create
the Costa Mesa Civic Play-
house and operate it for almost
a quarter of a century. She also
cast me in my first community
theater role back m 1965. The
civic playhouse and I started
out together, and we've both
been at it ever since.
This remarkable lady, who
died Saturday, had a pletho-
ra o( theater experience
behind her when she
aniwered the summons of
the city of Costa Mesa and
its cultural arts coordinator,
Bette Berg, to become the
founding director of the play-
house in what was then a
virtual firetrap on the
Orange CountY. Fairgrounds.
The first playhouse build-
ing contained a stage, an
auditorium and sufficient
dressing area, although
backstage space was a bit
scant. It was fertile enough
ground for Pan's creabve
genius to lake root. She'd

audience for mulb-set shows
such as "The Women •

musical director Aruta Gross-
man created several original
shows for young people.
Then came a teen group,
with now-retired Estancia
High School drama teacher
Barbara Van Holt staging a
production of "The Young
and Fair" to launch this
phase of the operation.
Finally, .in June 1965, she
brought forth the first adult
production, the light comedy
"Send Me No Flowers." I
made my debut as the ceme-
tery lot salesman, the part
Paul Lynde played in the
movie version. Thal minor
role lighted a flame that has
yet to be extinguished.
Pati presided at the fair-
grounds auditorium for near-
ly two decades, finally mov-
ing with the theater to its
present location at 611
Hamilton St., Costa Mesa, in
1984. I returned the follow-
ing year to play the "Father
of the Bride" in the play-
house's 20th anniversary
show -an experience that
helped prepare me for the
real thing a few months ago
when I escorted my daughter
Mindy down the aisle.

handedly for years), Pati also

The end of the Pati Tam-

bouncy production of "Call

the theater began giving out
acting trophies dubbed the
"Pati Awards" in her honor.
Now the curtain is closed
on an extraordinary commu-
