Clock ticks on Marinapark residents
•The 41 part-time and 15

NEWPORT BEACH -For 17
years, residents of Marinapark have
known their days were numbered.
But when the mobile home park's
lease with the city expired on Fri-
day, questions dating back to 1985
still lingered.
Since discussions began in Feb-
ruary about renewing the lease, dty
officials have driven home the point
that the 15 full-time and. 41 part-
time mobile home park residents
!).ave known all along they would be
asked to leave.
The 1985 lease said the city
would eventually tum the beach-
front property into a public use.
What's more, dty officials have said,
the residents have been compensat-
ed in advance for expense and
inconvenience of their inevitable
departure.
The original
lease, officials
say, included a
rent break.

Time ·to be aware
· of our water
A hoy.
The Orange County
Coastal Coalition, in
conjunction with Supervisor
Tom Wilson's office, wil\ pre-
sent a public awareness and
education symposium on
water quality educational
programs Thursday morning.
The slogan is •cleaning
the water -cleaning the
beaches -education is part
of the solution.•
This forum will allow orga-
nizations like schools to hear
about water quality educa-
tional programs available.
Surfrider, SeaGrant and other
nonprofits will present their
programs from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. Thursday at the New-
port Beach Library, 1000 Avo-
cado Ave. You must RSVP for
the symposium, and you can
sign up to give a 5-minute
presentation about your
water quality educational
program by calling Wtl.son's
office at (714) 834-3550.
I know that having educa-
tional programs in all the
schools will help the aware-
ness level increase However,
these programs m\N extend
from the coastal communities
Inland so that we me not
singing to the choir. Our 1ocal
programs' goals should include
building awareness in land-
locked counties and the states
west of the Continental Divide.
Also, you may remember
the water wells recently affect-
ed in our water districts. How-
ever, I think the biggest pol-
luter is ti. MTBE (~yl ter-

nia requires to be added to

other states have banned

has decided to phase out
MTBE by the end of 2002, but
we will still dump untold gal-
lons until year's end. I think
everyone should pressure
Sacramento to put an end to
MTBE now. Environmentalists
and scientists consider this the
most serious environmental
catastrophe since DDT.
Almost all two-stroke out-
boards used on boats, older
personal watercraft and some
gasoline-powered inboards
have unburned gasoline exit-
ing into the waters through the
exhaust system. Plus, recent
inspections of the new dual-
lined underground fuel tanks
show that most are still leaking
fuel. Some lakes, including
LalceTuhoe, have banned the
use of all two-stroke engines
due to the environmental con-
cerns of MTBE. When it's no
longer an additive, I wonder if
the ban will be lifted.
In my mind, there is a
simple solution: Stop requir-
ing the additive now and the
problem will stop. I have not
read a.QY studies that show
the benefit of MTBE as a fuel
additive that outweighs the
risks in the water. • Moo outboard manufac-

waterways by upgrading their
two-stroke outboards to newer
models, ¥eeping the engines
tuned and carefully filling the
fuel tanks to prevent spillage.
