CRYSTAL COVE -Money to
restore the 46 cottages at the state park
is fairly secure, even with the $24-bil-
lion state budget shortfall and a stale-
mate on the new year's budget. officials
said.
The $9.2 million in bond funds, $2.8-
million gift from the California Coastal
Commission and $1.1 million for short-
term repairs should be protected as
Republicans call for spending cuts.
That would allow at least $13.1 mil-
lion to restore the rustic but deteriorat-
ing cabins sitting on the beach.
However, the state Assembly hasn't
passed the budget, so Gov. Gray Davis
might be forced to make some compro-
mises to get approval on lU's final budget
for the fiscal year that began Monday.
"Preserving environmental con-
cerns is a high priority for Gov. Davis
during this budget,~ Davis spokesman
Byron Tucker said. "However, he is
reserving the right to blue pencil pro-
jects if needed.• .
Bond funding approved by voters as
part of Proposition 40, which passed in
March, can't be spent indiscriminately.
The money, including the $9.2 million,
is allocated to specific uses and doesn't
Dow through the general fund, making
it tougher to strip.
California State Parks leaders have
also said they are counting on
$500,000 -about half of the $1.1 mil-
lion -for interim repairs until a final
plan can be put in place for the beach-
front cottages. That plan is expected in
September.

REVISmNG AN OLD INTEREST
At 42, Kim Large has spent most
of her adult life as a stay-at-home
mother to her three sons while work-
ing on a small sewing business from
home. But four years ago, she adopt-
ed another title: Newport-Mesa Uni-
fied School District bus drive{. Sbe
has enjoyed the addition ever since.
With her sons all older than 14
now, Large said she wanted to do
more.
•I wanted to work with the kids,•
Large said. "I always wanted to be a
schoolteacher, but I kind of cut ·
myself short.•
Even though Large held that out-
look initially, she now understands
the full import of her job.
"The bus driver is often the first
person (the students I see in the
morning,• she said. "I wanted to
have a smile on my face and help
start their day off right."
Her relationship with the students
she serves is one of the most impor-
tant aspects of her job and pne, she
believes, that is often overlooked by
the public.

the size and slow speed of the 35-

people need to understand that her
responsibilities don't end with dri-
ving students to and fro. More
importantly, they include the safety
of the 80 children on board and even
the safety of the children getting on
and off the bus.
In addition, she must maintain a
complete knowledge of the bus she
drives and be constantly aware of
the road conditions on her route,
which usually changes every year.
Large must also renew her certifi-

However, as it is the biggest of the

beginning of every school.year is the
hardest part of the job.
CATCHING UP ON READING
: And with that as the hardest, the
downtime during class field trips
throughout the year remains the eas-

"I never had a chance to read until
I becam~ a bus driver,• Large said.
"Now, I get to catch up on all the
great novels that I never got to read.•
Although Large has plenty of time
to pursue personal goals while on the
job, she never forgets the importance
of what she does. ·
"It's transporting kids to and from

there to do it, a lot of these kids
wouldn't get there.•

F rom playing the gwtar with a

to executing all the good punch

Acting as his mouthpiece, ventrilo-
quist Randel McGee managed to keep
the children entertained for a 45-minute
variety show, not minding that the cre-
ation to his right was really the center
of the show.
As part of this year's Costa Mesa
Library Summer Reading Program,
which began June 26 and will continue
through Aug. 14, children ranging in age
from infancy to adolescence were drawn
into McGee's puppeleering world.
In full costume, McGee, who created
the character with his wife, moved
Groark with ease, giving the illusion
that they weren't one and the same.
"When l hit upon this idea, l realized
l couldn't make quick changes,·
McGee said. •But l wanted the illusion
that he was his own character."
And McGee achieved his goal,
according to his audience.
"How did the dragon talk?" asked
Zach Stephan, 6, of Costa Mesa.
With questions like that looming in
their minds, many of the du.ldren
became focused on finding the answers.
"It sort of creates an enthusiasm for

of the event. •The performances will

The performers scheduled as part of

~ · Be cautious, but
• ·~ cherish freedoms
I • •• •• • , •
on Fourth· of July
I t's probably overstating
it a bit to say that this
Fourth of July has spe-
cial significance.
But anyone who lived ·
through the shock and hor-
ror of last September knows
that fireworks and festivities
from this year's Fourth of
July celebrations will tug at
our patriotic heart strings
like never before. ·
Sadly, here in Newport-
Mesa, a litUe something will
be missing this year. The
annual Dunes fireworks
won't go off as usual, leav-
ing the skies empty over the
Back Bay. But something
tells us that the air in Costa
Mesa, one of the few
Orange County cities to
allow "safe afld sane" fire-
works, wiN be in tun bloom.
But don't forget, there are
many reasons to be cautious
this year as well. Some have
speculated that July 4 will
be a perfect day for a terror-
ist attack, so we all should
be on our guard. In West
Newport, police will be busy
enough with the typically
rowdy crowds.
Additionally, firefighters
: throughout the Southwest
are being taxed like never
before as some of the driest
years on record are giving
way to fierce firestorms that
have engulled hundreds of
thousands of acres of timber
and brush lands, as well as
hundreds of homes.
So be careful·with those
boxes of fireworks.
In sum, we would like to
take this time to not only
urge caution, but remind
you of a few reasons why
celebration this year is very
much in order. ·
As you're enjoying that
hamburger-or potato salad,
taking part in a gunny sack
race· or watching the fire-
-works glow, set aside some
time to reflect on just bow
fortunate we are to live in
one of the greatest nations
on earth.
How fortunate we are to
live in a country that values
freedom and human life and
human dignity.
How fortunate we are
that despite all of our dis-
agreements, despite our
political and personal
squabbles, the United States
is as united as ever and will
never back down from any
threat, terrorist or otherwise.
How fortunate we are to
have those brave souls, fire-
fighters, policemen and oth-
ers, who lost their lives try-
ing to save others in the ter-
rorist attacks.
How fortunate we are to
have the greatest military in
the world, many of whom
are now across the globe
defending our freedoms,
risking, and even losing,
their lives to protect those
freedoms.
So, yes, keep all those
blessings in mind this year,

T bis is in reply to a let-
ter sent in regarding
no fireworks this year
at Newport Dunes Resort
(Readers Respond, June 27).
In rebuttal to the resident
who unfairly accused the
Dunes of canceling this
year's fireworks show as a
response to the denial of
their expansion request,
check the calendar. There
has been a fireworks display
since the City Council voted
down expansion plans and
also since the passing of
Greenligbt.
Is that resident going to
bad-mouth the Lions Club
for not hosting the annual
Fish Fry, too?
Besides repeating stories
like other readers have about
how much we will all miss
the annual fireworks show,
our community should also
mourn the departure of the
Evans fal'nily (if the sale goes
through) and their good will
and charitable contributions
to our community. I personal-
ly have attended nwnerous
not-for-profit, charitable
fund-raisers at the Dunes
Resort, whlch the Evans fam-
ily donated facilities and pro-
vided organizations catering
and lel'Vices at reduced or

community service.
We will all miss the fire-
works display, but next year,
people should take things
into their own bands. Some
towns put out contribution
buckets at different loca-
tions around the area to
gather money to fund the
town fireworks display. I
would gladly donate to such
a cause and probably enjoy
the display even more
knowing that was my 20
bucks up there in red, whlte
and blue sparks.
First find the location and
then the money will come.
If we wait for our city
• 1eaders • to come up with an
answer, then maybe in a
couple of years, we can gath-
er on the steps of Newport
Beach Qty Hall and watch
the mayor light the annual

AT ISSUE: Barring a fireworks

I would just like to commend the

It reminds me of the 1930s when

just enjoy Newport Beach as New-

Balboa Bay Club uefairly criticized over fines
A s the prime contractor for the
new Balboa Bay Oub, we at
Snyder Langston are very
pleased that the issue of groundwa-

This has been a very frustrating situ-

Snyder Langston has a hard·

and we try to go way beyond what
we're required to do. More impor-
tant, the Balboa Bay Club bu been
an institution in this community for

very careful stewahi of the water-

Dllllll& REVIEW . . .
. Eating lunchfrom l)i/J.o Siam.
Jennifer k MM\al
DAILY PILOT
L unchtime in ~e news-

came time for me to do a

the hungry editors, reporters
and photographers in the

which several of us have
been, but no one from here

in Costa Mesa.
Diho Siam can be found
in the shopping center across
from 1\iangle Square. It's an
intimate dining space, filled
with colorful artwork
inspired by the life of Bud-
dha. On& of the most inter-
esting things about the
restaurant is that it offers
both a Chinese food and a
Thai food menu.
Por the purposes of this
review, the dining choices
were llmit~d to the daily lun-
cheon specials. There are 11
Thai specials and 16 Chinese
sped.als available between
11 a .m. and 3 p.m. Variety is
not a problem.
The Thai dishes are avail-
able with chick.en, beef, pork,
vegetables or tofu. Thai
lunches come with a side of
jasmine rice. The Chinese
lunch speci.als come with an
egg roll and fried rice.
City Editor James Meier
ordered the satay chicken off
the Thai menu ($5.75). The
· dish is described on the
menu as a marinated skewer
of meat, barbecued and
served with a peanut sauce
and cucumber dip.
"The peanut sauce used to
marinate the satay chicken
creates a delicious taste that
sticks around nicely as a faint
aftertaste,• he said. "The

Kerry Flynn, our news-

stir-fried chicken with diced

liked the vegetables in the
disb, calling them •crispy

overall taste to be •a little
bland.•
"I'm not sure where the
'almond' came from in the
nam& of the dish,• Flynn
said. "I found only one
almond half."
Reporter Deirdre Newman
had better things to say
about the Thai cashew nut
chicken ($5.95) ..
"It has a zingy flavor due
to the medley of vegetables
and the spicy saure that
accompanies it,• she said.
"While the onions and red
and green peppers pack a
potent pund:l., the chic)ten is
a little dry and chewy.•
She loved the jasmine
rice, calling it •very soft and
more tasty than some dry
globs that have accompanied
Thai food in the past.•
Newman also tried the
Thai iced tea, which she said
is a "luscious complement to
the dish, with a light, smoky
flavor that cleanses your

Photographer Don Leach
thought the pa-nang chicken
($5.50), chicken in spicy red

•simple, well done and very
tasty.• The coconut milk
sauce was "super good" over
the jasmine rice, but the d1sb
could have used a little more
chicken. But, he said he
would definitely be going to
Diho Siam again,
There was no meat what-
soever in my meal -green
jungle curry made with tofu
($5.50) -but there were
plenty of fresh veggies. A
nice amount of spice
warmed up the coconut-
based broth-and brought·a
tingle to my tongue. The tofu
sopped up the sauce well.
Chewy mushrooms, crisp
sugar peas, carrot slices,
bamboo shoots ana broccoli .
made for a variety of tasty ·
textures.
I did not like the Thai cof-
fee I got to complement my
meal, however. I like sweet
things, but this was a bit too
sweet. I wanted th~ ice to
melt faster, just to lighten the
taste.
Overall, the lunch specials
at Diho Siam seemed to
please. Most of the staff
thought it'was a place worth
going back to. The lunch
prices are inexpensive and
the to-go service is great -
they had the order ready on
time. If you go, try the Thai.

THEATER REVIEW
•1 TOm Titus
C osta Mesa's Trilogy Play-
house has, in its first year
and a half, mounted some
ambitious productions iii its limited
staging area -"The Secret Gar-
den• and "The Sound of Music"
come to mind -but nothing the
theater has produced in the past
quite approaches the scope of •Big

This musical version of Mark
Twain's novel •Huckleberry Finn"
has been staged locally in the more
spacious venues of the Laguna
Playhouse and the Orange County
Performing Arts Center, where
scenic spectacle often overshad-
owed 'the show's performance
aspects. At the Trilogy, the Roger
Miller-William Hauptmjlll story
receives a more intimate -and
ultimately more immediate -
treatment.
Director Alicia Butler wisely
double-casts a number of roles -
giving Don Nikois three memo-
rable, and highly contrasting, stage
turns as author Twain, Huck's
' drunken father and a smooth-ta lk-
ing ron man Viewing the show

ably wouldn't make the connection.

R . .J. Dickinson as Jim and James Mulligan as Huck Fl.mi rehearse a scene at the Trllo Playhouse ..
Any production of "Big River•
rises or falls on its Huckleberry

one of its aces. James Mulli9an,
who's performed in nearly every

skin of the adventurous teenager
who frees his guardian's slave and
accompanies him on a rafting trip

Mulligan renders a thoroughly
convincing performance as he
struggles inwardly with the morali-
ty of the time ("abolitionist• being
a dirty word in 19th century Mis-

on more than one occasion. He
also handles the musical numbers
with verve and guslo, most effec-
tively teaming with R.J. Dickinson
-supe!bly enacting the slave Jim

in the Rain."
Dickinson is given ample oppor-

a voice classically trained in gospel
music, which reaches its peak in
the emotional "Free at Last' num-
ber. He also excels in enhandng
the human side of a character
regarded by most as "property" in
a moving performance.
Nikois and nm Anderson con-
tribute memorable performances as
the King and the Duke, con men
who traverse the Mississippi look-
ing for a quick and easy buck.
Anderson particularly excels in this
segment, crucifying. Shakespeare

He Was proud to be an American . '
F or many years, one
man and his wife
forged a <:ommunity
tradition in Newport Beach
on tl).e Fourth of July. The
tradition ended two years
ago with the passing of Woll
Stem, a man who, more
thah most, knew and cher-
ished the meaning of Inde-
pendence Day in America.
Stern and his wife, Ann,
· held a Fourth of July barbe-
cue on the sands of the Back
Bay at the Newport Dunes
Waterfront Resort. Every
year, another 100 hot dogs
went on the grill. Another
crate of soda, another keg of
beer, another 100 apple pies
to serve to a guest list that
started with 50 friends and
turned into a gathering of
some 500 local residents
who knew that on the
Fourth, their hot dog would
be served by the Sterns.
Together they would all
share the "all-American·•
apple pie as the brilliant col-
ors of independence infused
the night sky over the radi-
ant, reflective and still
waters of the Back Bay. The
party died with Stern. How
appropriate to celebrate the
life of a unique and patriotic
American on a day that
meant so much to him.
It is regrettable that Stem
is not. here to share in these
thoughts, but it is one of the
very special attributes of
humankind to be able to
bold on to values, ideals
and memories long after
people have passed and
times have changed. Stern
was not the most popular or
beloved character on the
Orange Coast. He was, after
all, a divorce attorney. And
<livorce attorneys make
plenty of enemies.
When I first began writ-
ing this column about 10
years ago, I met the Stems
at a charity function, and I
included the mention of
their names in my column,
: The morning the column
• ran in the newspaper, my
: phone rang. A hysterical
1 woman was crying and
: screaming in my ear
• ,

demanding an explanation
of bow I could possibly

band's representative in
their divorce.
I never mentioned the
incident to Stern as I got to
know him over the years,
and I only share it now
because I realize that we '
are all complicated souls,
imperfect, uneve n, unequal
and none without a sha?e of
sadness and trouble in our
lives. Stem knew this so
well. He also knew that
each of us can only be
responsible for our own
individual happiness and
that the best that we can do
for one another is to be hon-
est, direct and caring when-
ever possible in any dealing
with another human being.
The Fourth of July .was
important to Stem because
he was a German-born Jew
who spent his teen years in
·a Nazi concentration camp.
The Fourth was important to
Stem because, as a young
man in America, he was
able to put himself through
law sch ool and build a
career based on his own
ability and not overshad-
owed by a political system
that denied him the right.
The Fourth was important to
Stern because he found the
love of a woman in America
who bore him children who
grew to realiz.e their full
potential in a land •with lib-
erty and justice for all.·
Stern would divorce and
then fall in love with his
second love, Ann, and
together they would build a
new life in a new direction,
discovering vastly new
worlds. The Fourth of.July
was important to Stem
because he and Ann, a
Lutheran, would discover
the meaning of a different
faith, known a s Bahai, and
this path would change
both of their Uves as they
searched for meaning in a
complicated world.
Stem would have been
heartbroken by the tragedy
or Sept. 11 . Yet he would
have reminded us that only
in America ls it possible to
protest a9ainst the govern-
ment and simultaneously
earn a million-dQllar fortune
in a business venture of
your own creation. Only in
America is it possible to
send your children to a fully
paid-for public education
and vote to have your gov-
ernment also permit you fo
receive a school voucher
that would allow you to use
tax dollars to send your,
child to an alternative pri-
vate school. Only in Ameri-
ca might you find a minority
voice challenging the
majority position on the
inclusion of the phrase
"under God" in the Pledge
of Allegiance. In America,
all voices a re heard.
Stem raised the fiag
higher than anyone else on
July 4 gecause he knew
firsthand what it was like to
be denied the freedom and
liberty of individual choice.
The fireworks over the Back
Bay may be gone on this
Fourth of July, but the
Fourth is not just about fire-
works. It's not about hot
dogs and barbecues. It's
about the spirit of people.
People like Stem. People
who know that what matters
is keeping alive the intangi-
ble spirit of freedom that is
·so much more than the right
to live in a certain fashion.
Stern was proud to be an
American not just on the
Fourth of July, but every
day. I stand in line behind
him, and I know countless
others in this community,
and every community in this
nation, agree. America has
much to celebrate on this
very special day. Keep
thoughts of •and justice for
au· in your heart and in
your mind, and upon your
lips as you express your
beliefs. Our greatest free-
dom is the freedom of the
mind. We can think it. We
can say it. We can live it.

Sliva met Moyer in 1996
when Silva took his two sons,
Matt and Andrew, a NBL(
American ~ague Majors All-

The four took in a Yanlcees-
Angels game as Fred Silva
recalled, and stayed at the same
hotel American League teams

the Mariners checked in for their

bought baseballs so Matt and
Andrew could get autographs,
dnd gave one to Matt as Fred
went sightseeing.
Matt Silva came back with a
ball 'iigned and the three went
to lunch at the Mickey Mantle
Re!>teurant near Ce~tral Park.
While at the restaurant
Andrew and Matt spotted
Moyer and ran to tell their father.
"We had no· idea who
(Moyer) was,• Fred Silva said.
After the game that night,
Stlva aod Moyer saw each other
in the hotel. ~Uva introduced
himself to Moyer and the two
have bee n friends ever since,
seeing -each other four or five
times a year, according to Silva.
Moyer is in his 16th Major
League season and bas a
lifetime record of 159-120 with a
4.16 ERA while amassing 1,444
stnkeouts. This season he is 8-3
with a 3.02 ERA and 66
strikeouts in 122 tnnlngs pitched.
He has thrown two complete
gdmes this season.
Silva credits Moyer with
making Andrew want to be a
pitcher.
"The reason (Andrew)
became a pitcher is because of
JcUn.ie," Fred Silva said. •Andrew
had JUSt started T-ball, so he was
kind of a hero for (him).•
Andrew's pension for giving
batters little time to get ready
1n the batter's box can be
dltri buted to Moyer's influence,
r=red Silva said.
"(Andrew) gets slowed down

With one out in the first and
Newport Beach leading 1-0, a
Mission Vl.ejo hittet hit a line

Newport right fielder
Cameron Koziara. Koziara ran
to rebieve the ball, threw it to

made the tag for the out.
Colton then ran to the
backstop to fetch a passed ball

John Doering covering the

Mission Viejo runner for the
third out in the first.
The defense seemed to
spark Newport, who scored
three in the top of the second

In the inning, Cory Vitalo
led off with a double and Jaclc
Gerdau saaificed him to third.
After a walk, Will Morrow J.aid

Parker Stone then lined· a
base hit to center field to score
two. Newport would add
another run in the inning.
Mission Viejo scored three
in the bottom of the third to
pull within 4-3. but Newport

first to complete the play.
Doering pitched a complete
