The State Water Resources
Control Board may add as
many as sue creeks in the
city to a federal list of
impaired water bodies as
early as next month, offi-
cials said Friday.
But homeowners in
Newport Coast are ques-

real need for the federal
protection.
Possible additions to the
list could include Buck
Gully, Los l'rancos, Muddy
Creek, Pelican Hill
Waterfall, Pelican Point
Creek and Pelican Pomt
Middle Creek.
The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency has set a
deadline of April 30 for the
board to submit any new
entries for inclusion on the
list.
A local environmentalist,
the Irvine Co. and other
groups have all found

-John G~Whtttler
I 'd heard that it was going t.o happen,
1 but the date and deta1ls changed S0
much that l hadn't thought about it for
awhile. Therefore r was swpri5ed last
Sunday when my mother-in-law told me
that our neighborhood Ralphs Market
was closing that day.
We were eating brunch outside at a
restaurant near
Ralphs. I looked
over at the market.
and nothing looked
different on the out·
side. After brunch.
we walked over and
things did look
decidedly different
Qn the inside. There
was still food on the
~elves, but it was
noticeably less. I

details of the market, and I told her I'd
see her m a few hours when I came back
with my marketing list. SEAN HIUIR I OAll v I'll 0.
Gall Mlller ls the pastor at Child Centered Church. While walking out of the store, I over-
beard one woman say to her checker, • 1
can't believe it. 11lis is such a loss to me,
my family, my neighborhood. I've come
here for 25 years. r practically raised my
children in this market. Now what am I
going to do?." Child Centered Church
I didn't hear the checker's response,
but I know that like all of us, the woman
will have to go to another market. We
have a Gelson's nearby and there are
things 1 shop for there that I can't get at
Ralphs and vice versa. I know some of
the checkers by name there as well, and
I've bad plenty of food for columns come
from both markets.
During the day I thought back to the
woman's comment about the loss of the
market. It will be a loss to many. But then
l thought about the different ways God
can use loss in our lives, to bring some-
thing we chdn't have bef6)re.
Many y~ ago we needed to move
from a house that we all loved, and it
was a real loss to us. But God worked
through the situation so creatively. and
we gained a neighborhood filled with
great friends and neighbors.
When I went back late that afternoon
to Ralphs, I was surprised at how empty
the shelves were. There is a brand of tor-
tillas that I've only found there, but there
were no tortillas of any kind Jett.
1Wo days later I went to the other
nearest Ralphs, where Monica and many
others were transferred. I asked Monica
hows.be was.
·r was pretty emotional the first day
and could hardly talk,# she said. ·rm OK
today. I actually like it here and familiar
faces are bidcling in.·
I saw familiar faces too and I enjoyed
seeing some friends I wouldn't have seen
U: I bltdn't had to drive to their neighbor-
hood to shop. I also found the brand of
tortillas I wanted.
I'm sure I'll shop at many markets that
undergo many changes over many years.
But wherever I go and whatever I do, I'll
always be accompanied by an ever-lov-
ing, but never-changing God. Unlike any
market, any thing or any body, God
never needs remodeling, moves away or
goes out of date.
And you can quote me on that.

to the Santa Ana Regional
Angeles court rules on
Kline's petition.
Mark Petracca, a political
science professor at UC
Irvine, said the race may not
entirely binge on that deci-
sion. A legal challenge to the
results could be waged
regarding the placement of
write-in candidates' names
on a list offered at polling
places.
In just one of the strange
twists in this judgesl:µp race,
a court ordered that polling
places announce the avail-
ability of write-in candidate
information -an unprece-
dented move. Lists of wrlte-
in candidates have always
been available, but few vot-
ers know to ask fot them.
It can be argued that votes
for Adams were not neces-
sarily votes for him but the
easiest vote against Kline,
Petracca said.
People who knew walk-
ing in that they would not
vote for the beleaguered
IOine could have picked up
the reaWly available list of
challenge~ and simply
wrote in the first name,
which was Adams', Petrecca
explained.
As a result, Petracca said
it is not surprising Adams
garnered most of the write-in
votes.
•tt's also a simple name
and happens to be the same
as that of a former U.S. pres-
ident," Petracca noted.
Sandoval said she had
questioned the order of the
names, wondering why state
officials chose to list names
alphabetically instead of in a
random order, like regular
ballot placement. But she is
not planning to challenge
the results.
"I'm not big on filing law-
suits, plus there i.S not a lot of
law in this area,• Sandoval
said. ·1 don't know. We'll just
take it one day at a time."
Robinson said she too is
aware that ballot placements
can make a difference in
election results but doubts
that carried much weight in
this race. She will not chal-
lenge the results.

Last summer, Brown, with

Both Crystal Cove and

The move to add' the

In fact, board staff mem-

ByTom Titus
I t's said that, back in 1948, play·

had to virtually twist Cole Porter's
arm to convince him to contribute the
music and lyrics to their new project

putting on a musical version of •The
Taming of the Shrew. -
Luckily for us, they succeeded, and

won five Tonys and is on view

dances are symbolic of not only
the Irish in their homeland, but
the lri.sb immigrant story.
The name of the show
"Riverdance, -which runs at
Segerstrom Hall from Tuesday
through March 31, refers to the
last number of the first act. which
tells the story of a tributary in
Ireland leading to the sea. The
name of the troupe coming to
Costa Mesa -The Lagan -
refers to the major river that
courses through Belfast. The com-
pany that travels in Europe and
Asia is called The Llffey, which is
the river that runs through Dublin.
The rest of the two-hour-plus
musical doesn't tell a detailed
story, but offers instead thematic
ties to the Irish culture.
: Theatre today.
The first act of "Riverdance•
deals with the country's legends.
The second act addresses depar-
twe and discovery, referring to : Rennie and Michael Patrick

A jump-serve ace by 5-foot-

the Mustangs' four Division I
recruits, began the string of five
straight points to close out the
second game. It also typified the
huge contribution made by the
Long Beach State-bound
Caldwell, who is dwarfed in
stature only by 6-9 UCLA-

Caldwell, whose booming
jump serve produced four aces

four sideouts, kills by Tim
Schneider and Josh
