Old Crystal .Cove .footbridge _· to return
•State parks officials say about $.50,000 has been set a5ide
to reconstruct span that would make-the park easier to
access for pedestrians and visitors with disabilities.

CRYSTAL .COVE -State stew-
ards of the historic cottages at the
state park have launched efforts to
rebuild an original footbridge to
improve access to the beach, parks
officials said.
Acting as a quasi-gateway to a
group of hard-to-reach cottages in
the center of the cove's historic dis-
trict, the bridge would allow pedes-
trians and visitors with disabilities to
reach a handful of the cottages.·
California State Parks officials,
managing the protection and
restoration of the 46 cottages, are
working in partnership with activist
• and former resident Laura Dav.ick,
who co-founded the Crystal Cove
Conservancy, a nonprofit group rais-
ing money to restore the cottages.
•What we'll be al>le to do is open
an area that is inaccessible to hand-
icapped · visitors,• Davick said.
•That's the driving force."
The bridge, which was built in
the 1930s, had allowed p¢estrians
to cross a drainage channel that car-
ries urban runoff to fhe beach. It was
washed out during heavy rains in
1994 and again during the El Niilo
storm of· 1998.
About $50,000 has been set aside
to rebuild the bridge. This time,
state a,chitects will redesign it to
wit9stand a heavy storm, Orange
Coast District Supt. Mike Tope said.
•it'll be the exact replica of what
was there before,• Tope said.
·w e're going to try to make a few
modifications to keep it from being
washed out again.•
Initially, tJ>.e.. bridge l~d visitors
onto the patio of one of the former
residents of the cove.
Plans are in the works to restore
the ramshackle buildings and, per-
haps, use the patio to host educa-
tional talks and other social events
in the cove, Davick said. As part of
the rebuilding of the bridge, the
new structure will be widened to
accommodate people in ·wheel-
chairs.
The new bridge would also be

NEWPORT BEACH -With the federal
government doling out billions of dollars for
homeland security, defense and aid to the arr-

guarded optimism about funding for two local

Rep. Chris Cox, who represents the city,
has pushed for federal money for the projects.
Cox said he has submitted requests for $6.3

rent budget climate, local officials expect a
lesser amount, just under $2 million, to even-
tually find its way back to the city.

Finding true

·we find freedom when we find God;"we

-Peuf E. Scherw
M any of you celebrated your Fourth
of July with family, friends, food
and possibly even fireworks,
depending on where you live. Besides
sharing watermelons and barbecues,
ma.ny of you probably shared stories, dis·
cussion.s or even deliberations about our
country, freedom and the Pledge of
Allegiance.

My family and I had
many interesting dis·
cussions recently about
those issues, as well as
truth, history and God.

tion in the Revolution and as a stable by
Uruon troops. My husband, Jon, and I towed ·
the church and the old cemetery, and it was
intriguing to think of the history within those
old brick walls and grassy grounds.
Obviously, those walls didn't speak. but the
written material spoke loudly of the church
continuing its original founders' commitment
to honor, love and being in relationship with
God. There is wisdom, and freedom, in
keeping God in his proper place of authority.
Serving God by counting pennies
Harbor Christian Church plans party to honor Warren Piper,
who is retiring as the church's financial secretary .
The next day, our family attended anoth-
er nearby church, and we heard a powerful
sermon about our country's history and her-
itage. The pastor explained that though our
country was founded on God's truth and
principles, our society has eroded as we
have forced God out of public life. If people
will turn their hearts back to God individu-
ally, we have a chance of turning our nation
back to Its original strong foundation.
We also heard a moving medley of the
different service hymns of each of the armed
forces. Those who had, were related to, or
presently served stood when their song was
played and the audience clapped. It was a
powerful reminder that we need to respect.
remember and honor those who have saoi-
ficed for our freedom. For many, the price
was paid in blood.
Let us not onJ~ celebrate the birthday of
our country's independence one day a year.
Let us ensure it by praying every day for the
hearts not only of oor-E.'<>unby'&Jeaden;, but ....
also of all men and women. Living among
our amber waves of grain and from sea to
shining sea are people created by and loved
by God, and with whom God desires a rela-
tionship.
This morning before waking to finish this
colwnn, I had a dream in which r saw a
churning sea filled with many different sizes
and kinds of boat<>, some going in d.fcles,
others bumping into each other, aRd' many
floating aimlessly. It was as if nobody was at
the helm of the ships, nobody was navigat-
ing. After the tidal wave of terror in
September, many people turned the helm of
their boat5 and their hearts over to God. I
pray that we continually ask God to be our
navigator and that we find our ultimate free.
dom in him.
Long after the fireworks st.ands are dis-
mantJed, let's remember what our country
was built upon. I'm proud to sing "God

Having served as the church's financial

series of Brown Bag Musicals this summer
at the parish patio, 3233 Pacific View Drive,
Corona del Mar. On Wednesday, folk
singer Rusty Vail will entertain, and on
new, but in the meantime, they're also plan-
ning a big celebration of Piper's many years
of service to take place next Sunday.
Piper joined the church about 15 years
ago and started serving in "otiw.r capaci-
ties," which entailed being resp(>nsible not
only for himself but for other committees
and teams.
"When I was asked if I would consjder •·
the financial secretary job, I said I would
give it a try,· the Huntington Beach resi-
dent said. •1 thought a job in which I was
mainly responsible for my job alone was
easier for me to handle.•
Piper admitted that in the beginning, if
he stopped to think about it, he was flat·
tered the church trusted him with matters
as big as money.
•And it was a little scary, if I stopped to
think about it,· he said. •w e don't have
somebody standing guard over every step
of the operation.•
His volunteer duties, throughout the
years, included gathering people's financial
offerings, counting the sum and deposi!ing
the money in the bank. He wrote financial
reports every month for church leaders to
read during board meetings, and he sent
out letters quarterly to congregants who
had made pledges to the church.

Fourth celebrations mostly peaceful .
While most of the Fourth of July
partyers in West Newport were
mellow, lt got a little rowdy after
dark as the o.ll·day alcohol con-
sumption caught up with some of
them.
Police arrested 15-4 people in the
dty late Thursday and early Friday,
mostly in West Newport, said Sgt.
Fred Heinecke of the Newport
Beach Police Department.
~ost of the arrests involved
alcohol, and there were quite a few
fights, Heinecke said.
About 200 police officers from
the City's department, Costa Mesa
Police Department and the
California Highway Patrol
patrolled the area.
Heinecke said the number of
arrests was similar to previous
years.
#Last night, the crowd didn't get
out of hand, and the vast majority
of people bad a peaceful Fourth of
July celebration, so I'<t say things
were going pretty good,• Heinecke

Worse, trash in the street

whom were American citi-.
zens.
At Manzanar, these
Americans raised hogs,
grew enough fruits and
vegetables to be 80% self-
sufflcient and even knitted
camouflage nets for the
U.S. war effort. ·
At Manzanar, dust flies
everywhere, all the time.
These Americans lived
for years behind barbed
wire, surrounded by armed
guards. Before coming to
this bell on earth, they
were stripped of their
homes, businesses and
allowed to take only what
could fit into two suitcases.
At this moment, the
National Park Service is
building a visitor's center at
Manzanar, a long overdue
monument to the amazing •
inhabitants of this camp. In
this day of declining liber-
ties, it is more important
than ever that our children
understand the importance
of maintaining vigilance
over our government.
So here's a summer trav-
el tip: Leave the home the-
ater at home. Start your "'
vacation not when you
reach your destination but
when you leave your front
door. Break up your road
trip into 2-to 3-hour seg-
ments ·so you can stop and
smell the Joshua trees.
And when your kids ask,
•Are we there yet,• just
keep your cool, smile and
say, "Not yet. Anyone up
for a game of auto bingo?"

she carry cutting-edge
designers, she also has
unique gifts, jewelry, lingerie
and shoes. Berge's publicist

SOUTH COAST ADDmONS
It seems like South Coast
Plaza is constantly adding
exciting new retail stores
and restaurants. It's bard to
keep up. The latest lineup of
stores scheduled to open in
the f!ill are Botteg a Veneta,
David Yurman, Dooney &
Burke, Jimmy ChoO' and
Ron Herman. If you don't
already know about Bottega
Veneta's soft as cashmere
leather, woven handbags
and leather accessories from
Italy, you'll want to visit the
new store and check it out. If
you're into jew~, ydU'll
appreciate David Yurman,
an internationally known
American jewelry designer.
Yurman's signature pieces
are ·its Cable Collection,
which combines sterling sil-
ver with diamonds and gem-
stones. Dooney & Burke is an
American designer of hand-
crafted handbags, luggage
and accessories. Its signature·
pieces include leather-
trimmed bags, driving
gloves, leather belts and
hats. Jimmy Choo has quick·
ly become the shoe to have
for those in the know. l thmk
it has even eclipsed Manolo
Blahnik as the shoe of the
moment. The cutting-edge
shoe designer is always wom
by fashionistas and celebri-
ties. The sexy, strappy shoes
come in leather, skins and
fabrics, and even are
adorned with Swarovski
crystal, beads, buckles or
pony hair. If you're not famil-
iar with Ron Herman, you
have to know about the
incredible specialty store he
created in Los Angeles, Fred
Segal Melrose. Luckily for
us, Hennan is opening his
newest women's store at
South Coast Plaza in
November. The Ron Herman
Boutique will feature fash·
ion-forward apparel for the
young minded, with domes-

an option.

The video, which took three days, three
locations and a 30-person crew to shoot,
tells the story of a girl who is remembering
a perfect reJationship that she messed up.
Scenes include her walking down the
beach reminiscing about the lead singer in
the band, a fight by a pool and the girl
alone in a tub.
Vitti said be chose to do the video in 35
millimeter, the medium most professional
music videos are made in, because he

~ The 10th annual Summer Food and

recently at South Coast
Plaza. The event, sponsored
in part by Crate & Barrel
and Macy's Home Store,
attracted more than 2,000
revelers. Organizers had
expected only 800 to attend.
The festival and the cook-
ing demorutrations raised
significant funds for the two
charities, which both serve
needy families in Orange
County. According to the
groups, there are 400,000
men, women and children in
Orange County at risk of
going to bed hungry every
night.
Anton Segentrom, scion
of the Segerstrom dynasty
operating South Coast Plaza,
has made this event an
annual project that is not
just a commercial exercise
but a personal commitment
based on a real connection
to helping eradicate hunger
in our midst. Segerstrom was
inspired by the dedication of
Merle Hatleberg, who start-
ed Someone Cares Soup
Kitchen in 1986.
In a wheelchair,
Hatleberg began her hunger
project using whatever
funds she could gather, orig-
inally serving some 30 peo-

GULFSTREAM~S LUNCH SERVED .
WITH SIDE OF COASTAL FIAIR
Where to lunch after a hectic
morning of meetings, shopping

daunting task. But the decision
becomes easier if the lunch

ocean breezes and warm sand.
Gulfstream offers just this type

Another lunch favorite is the

to add zing to the burger, but not
drown out the ahi's, natural
flavor. The dish is served with

for a three-point look. it helped tie up
St. Monica point guard Mike Uoreda,
who was smothered by Cd.M's Jay

Northridge bottled up lloreda as
time expired and the Sea Kings, who
last year at this point were just shak-
ing hands with first-year coach Curry,
erupted with the faithful 11.ke the pre-
vious night's fireworks on nearby
Costa Mesa streets.
'Even though it's the often loosely
approached non-game face summer,
this win over St Monica was big for
Cd.M, which enjoyed a 34-29 halftime
edge, but lost the lead and rallied in
the fourth quarter, when the Sea
Kings outscored the Mariners, 20-12.
After a St Monica foul, Matsen
inbounded a sideline pass to 6-foot-3
junior Pancho Seaborn with 1:30 left
and the Sea Kings ahead, 60-59.
Seaborn, who led CdM with .26
points, grabbed Matsen's pass under-
neath the basket ~d scored to pro-
vide the Sea Kings with a three-point
lead.
•Pancho made a great catch under
the basket,• said Curry, who watched
St. Monica cut the lead to one again
with 0:24 to play, which was followed
by a missed CdM free throw on the
front end of a one-and-one with 0:21
remaining. "Brett Matsen was our b4u boy

Quinn said, an All-CIF Southern
Section Division IV selection for the
Sea Kings in 1992-93, when they cap-
tured the CIF Division IV-AA champi-

St. Monica rebounded the miss,
but on the other end. Matsen
stripped the ball from a point guard
and dished a lead pass to Freede,
who scored solo on a layup with 0:06
on the dock. giving Curry's team
another three-point edge and its
margin of victory.

now they're starting to figure it out,•
Curry said. •That wasn't coaching.
They just did it. You don't teach miss

make a layup.•
Following Seabom's 26, which
iDcluded two early three-pointers to
spark the CdM offense, was Freede
(11 points) and Matsen (10).

Monday, Guerrero started that job at

and many memories will always be

Over the past 9

Guerrero has
made it happen
for Irvine and be
has also set the
table for bis suc-
cessor to take
Steve Virgen

the Anteaters even higher.
•1 leave a big piece of my heart
and my soul here at Crawford Hall,·
Guerrero said, while sitting at bis
desk, last week. "When I move on to
...-l::ICLA, that will never go away.•
The Anteaters will surely remem-
ber the AD who raised UCI from a
rock-bottom rut to the model ol smart
management, key hirings and the
how-to of involving the student body.
•(The last two months on the job)
has been very difficult from an emo-
tional standpoint because I'm very
dose to my staff, I'm very dose to my
coaches and I'm very dose to the stu-
dent~athletes who perform here,•
Guerrero said.
Yes, Guerrero also created a fami-
ly-type atmosphere at UCL He was
the proud papa, who genuinely
smiled at his accomplishments
because it was a team effort and
because, as he puts it, he did it the
right way.
There was definitely reason to be
proud, because when Guerrero came
to UCl, he had huge challenges in
front of him.
Here's an idea of how big the
challenges: There were athletic
directors·who thought about apply-
ing for the UCI job back when
Guerrero also applied. Those ADs
asked for $1 million for the budget
and then they would consider com-
ing .. ·u was never about that for me,•
Guerrero said. ·u was always about
taking the positive attributes, build-
ing a solid foundation and.then going
from there.·
Then, once Guerrero was hired,
hepresented bis plan for UCI and his
belief that the department oould be
the best Division I-AAA program

athletes were lran<iCening to
other institutions because they
felt this ship was sinking. There
were so many negatives that we
walked into at that time.•
Just about eveiyth.iQg went
according to plan for Guerrero.
Throughout the 9 Vl ye&.B,
Guerrero kept a signed baseball
at his desk. The ball was signed
by the 1973 UCJ ~n D

the Sea Kings struggled with their
shooting. But they came on in the
second half.
liailing, 26-19, at the half,
CdM outscored Newport. 14-8,
in the third quarter. CclM junior
Adam Freede recorded a steal,
dribbled the length or the court
and pulled up to nail a jump shot
at the buzzer, and the Sea Kings
were down, 34-33.
ln the fourth quarter,
Mancillas took advantage or his
wide-open space and knocked
down his shots. The Sailors
seemed to be focused on stop-
ping Seaborn, who scored 26
points in a 65-62 win over St.
Monica.
"(Some NAwport players)
were saying they were going to
beat us: Mancillas said. "It was
just a question of how much they
would beat us by -that's what
they were saying. It felt good to
win."
After Mancillas' three-pointer
put CdM up, '47-~. CdM
grabbed more momentum as
Seaborn drew an offensive foul
from Pajevi<: in the post. Then,
the Sea Kings ran a stall-type
offense and hit 7 or t 2 free
throws down the stretch.
"For us, (winning close
games) is really big,• Cuny said
"Those are games we wouldn't
win last year. We needed to play
to our strengths, and so we gave
up the interior defense.•
Seaborn added nine points for
. the Sea Kings, while Jay

Brett Matsen scored six.
