NEWPORT BEACH -It's not often
that residents bold private fireworks
displays. In addition to the $1,000 or so
per-minute cost of a professional
pyrotechnics show, anyone who wants
to put one on must also carry about $1
million in liability insurance for the
event -sometimes $2 million.
But while only a handful of people
each year find it worth their while to
put on a fireworks show, those who do
tend to get a lot of attention, not all of -It-good. .

On June 9, a private wedding recep-
tion at the Pelican Hill Pavilion drew
some cheers and some jeers from resi-
dents who thought the 9:45 p.m. show
was too late. In response, City Council
members are considering whether to
put in place a formal policy on exactly
when, where and how people can hold
private fireworks shows. And, perhaps
most important. they are tackling the
sticky question of who should receive
notices of impending explosions in and.
near their own backyards.

Like last year, he will

I Challenger presses for
debates with Rohrabacher
• Long Beach attorney
· Gerrie Schipske says
residents of the 46th
Congressional District
deserveoito meet the
two opponents.
Peul Cllnton
DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA
Democrat Gerrie Schipske
has challenged Rep. Dana
Rohrabacher to a string of
debates in each city of the
newly constituted 46th
Congressional District.
Schipske, a nurse and
labor attorney from Long
Beach, laid down the gaunt-
let in a letter to the incum-
bent congressman sent out
late Monday.
"Because of redistricting,
many voters know neither of
us and they are entitled to hear
our views on the important
issues," Schipske wrote. u1
hope you will agree to join me
in working out a schedule. I
suggest that we utilize the
upcoming congressional
recess to begin these debates.•
Schipske nearly upset
Republican Rep. Steve Hom
in 2000 in a district largely
made up of Long Beach.
Rohra bacher's new district
includes Costa Mesa,
Huntington Beach, Seal
Beach, parts of Long Beach,
San Pedro, Rolling Hills and
Palos Verdes.
State lawmakers redrew
the district to resemble one
with boundaries close to· one
OUR MEALS ARE
A TRIP TO MEXICO
Robrabacber held in the late
1980s, when he first won the
seat.
•1 always debate my oppo-
nents," Robrabacber said in a
statement responding to the
letter.
However, a spokesman for
the congressman didn't say
when or where Rohrabacher
would discuss the pertinent
issues with Schipske.
Robrabacber has debated
his Democratic opponents in
the past. On Oct. 21, 1998, he
squared off against Patricia
W. Neal at Golden West
College in Huntington Beach.
In 1996, he passed on a
challenge from surfer Sally
Alexa.oder, his 82-year-old
Democratic opponent, to a
"surf-off."
Incumbents tend to resist
debates with their chal-
lengers because they have
more to lose. There's always
the chance they will stumble
or embarrass themselves, as
in the case of Dan Quayle's
performance in the vice pres-
idential debate with Sen.
Lloyd Benson in 1988.
•No incumbent has an
incentive to debate," said
Mark Petracca, the head of
the UC Irvine Political Science
Deparbnent. "Th4!! incuinbent
has something to lose. [By tak-
ing the same stage), you allow
your challenger to assume the
same stature you do."
In the statement,
Rohrabacher said he .would
debate Schipske if a neutral
third party, such as the
League of Women Voters,
organized the forum.

With these events in mind,
council members on Tuesday

one thing was clear: Newport

EAGLE

And then she waited
some more.
On Tuesday, Cotsworth
boarded a tugboat at OCC's
School of Sailing and
Seamanship and took a brief
ride to meet her husband at
the entrance to Newport
Harbor.
As the tugboat sailed into
view of the Alaska Eagle -
a 65-foot sailing vessel -
Cotsworth jubilantly waved
her sign.
"I was thrilled," Fred
Cotsworth said, beaming.
~e Fred Cotsworth, 56,
received the most emotional
homecoming,'the arrival of
the Alaska Eagle under
sunny skies was highly
anticipated by almost all
eight passengers. They had
just completed the last leg of
a 13-month, 25,000-mile
journey from Newport Beach
to Antarctica and back.
"It feels good to be home,
but we kept saying we didn't
want it to end," said Robi
Dalrymple, 26, who handles
marine maintenance for the
college and was the youngest
passenger on the journey.
The Alaska EAgle was
donated to the college in 1982.
Originally bUilt to race around
the world, it has banked more
than 200,000 miles with OCC
sailing students on board.
On June 27, 2001, the ves-
sel began a 13-month odyssey
from Newport Beach that _
included Ha\ttaii, Tuhiti, South
America and the Antarctic.
While most OCC sailing
classes are open to anyone,
boarding the Eagle takes a
certain level of skill and is by
application only. Each leg can
handle up to 10 students and
a crew of three.
In addition to drinking in
the breathtaking scenery
around them, the passengers
learn useful nautical skills,
such as knot tying, life raft
operation, anchoring and
n~vigating.
The skipper and first mate
-Rich and Sheri C rowe -
have been navigating the
Eagle for the past 20 years.
Although they had already

'It went flawlessly

determination.'
-Rich Crowe, skipper
for the Alaska Eagle
visited many of the exotic
places on this itinerary, Rich
Crowe said he considered the
trip to be especially aggres-
sive for a sail training school.
Nonetheless, the trip was a
rousing success, he said.
"It went flawlessly
because of preparation, per-
spiration and determina-
tion,• he said. .,,,
The only hitch occurred
when part of the sail broke
about 1,000 miles away from
Newport Beach. The wind,
blowing about 25 knots, ripped
a 12-foot-long tear through the
sail. Dalrymple said; resulting
in an "all hands on deck" call.
They took the sail down
· and hung it in the cabin. For
eight hours, the passengers
and crew stitched it back
together. With four people on
one side and four on the
other, they passed sewing
needles back and forth until
the sail was repaired.

Announcing
passengers had enough good
sailing karma to participate
on two legs.
Sheree Austin-Gagne, 46,
sailed from Easter Island to
Tahiti, flew home to Marina
del Rey for a few weeks,
then rejoined the Eagle on
the last leg from Hawaii to
Newport Beach. The two
legs had decidedly diffe rent
flavors, she said.
"The (first) one was more
like island-hopping," Austin-
Gagne said. "On this trip,
the marine life was incredi-
ble. We had two to three
whale sightings and four to
five dolphin sightings."
Both legs, however, pro-
vided awe-inspiring scenery,
she said.
"There's some things you
can't describe, like the
serenity (of the oceanJ and
360-degree sunrises and
sunsets," Austin-Gagne said.
Many of the passengers
said the once-in-a-lifetime
experience stoked their sail-
ing passion to embark on
more adventures.
"I learned you have to be
very resourceful and have to
have more courage than I
thought to face big winds and
big waves," Fred Cotsworth
said. "I've just been an aet."'Oun-

DAILY PILOT
IRVINE -Unfortunately for the
Newport Harbor Baseball Association
Bronco B All-Stars, the scoring started
early for the Los Alamitos C team
and continued throughout the
double-elimination District 3 All-Star
Tournament game Tuesday at
Harvard Park. The result was an J 8-
2 Los Alamitos victory in the contest
between 11-and 12-year-olds.
Highlighted by a 10-run fourth
inning, Los Alamitos scored two runs
in the other four innings of the game
called after five due to lhe 10-run
mercy rule.
With 10 walks and 14 hits, Los
Alamitos scored early and often. And
Newport Manager Chris Hone
quickJy gave credit where credit was
due.
#(Los Alamitos) is a very good
hitting team and it was hard to
overcome,• Hone said. ·Hats off to
them, they outplayed us.·
Los Alamitos scored its runs in a
variety of different ways. They tut the
long ball, drove s ingles into the
outfield, capitalized on errors, as well
as walks.
In the 10-run fourth, half of the six
walks issued Los Al hitters three
produced RBis. All six hitters who
walked came around to score in the
inning as Los Alamitos sent 15 batters
to the plate.
·The walks did us in,· Hone said.
When Hone walks to the mound to
confer with his pitchers, he often tells
a joke or makes a comment to ease
any stress the pitcher may be feeling.
After speaking with starting
pitcher Jerry Whitney during one
timeout, both Hone and Whitney
chuck)ed as Hone walked back to

#The first thing I do is ask
something like, 'Where do you guys
want to go tonight?' Or I'll tell them
to look at a cute girl in the stands,·
Hone said. "They're nervous enough
out there. My philosophy is that if
they haven't learned it in practice,
they won't learn it in the game.•
Whitney struck out three in 3 1/3
inrungs before giving way to relievers
lfevor Jones and Drew Littlefair.
·Jerry pitched well,• Hone said.
"Littlefair did a good job°'coming in,
especially for an 1 t-year:old. It was a
tough situation for a kid to come into.•
Littlefair, one of onJy two 11-year-

Costa Mesa American edged by Seaview
Two unearned runs enough

DAILY PILOT
HUNTINGTON BEACH -Tbe
Costa Mesa American Little League
All·Stars tickled one another, laughed
and made funny noises while posing for
a picture Tuesday at LeBard Park. The
average spectator would have had no
have idea this was a team that was just
eliminated from the District 62 Majors
Division All-Star Tournament, after
dropping a 2-0 pitchers duel to Seaview
from Huntington Beach.
"Play hard! Have fun," the Costa
Mesa All-Stars yelled in a huddle
before their battle with Seaview. And,
they clearly appeared to have fun.
MEN'S VOWYIALI.
In addition, Costa Mesa's All-Stars
remained satisfied afterward, because
ol the sound defense they displayed.
Costa Mesa pitcher Andrew Millian
went the distance. He a llowed just
three hits and struck out four without a
waJk, all with an economical 66 pitches.
Seaview's two runs were unearned,
one in the top of the third on a passed
ball and another in the fifth on a
throwing error.
Millian retired the side in order an
the first. second and fowth innings.
·He played really well," Costa Mesa
Manager Scott Willson said of Millian.
"The whole team played great. There
were a lot of great defensive plays.•
Seaview had some strong pitching of
its own from left-hander Aaron Amaral,
who dealt a complete game for his first
one-bit shutout of the season. He struck
out 11 batters in 88 pitches and was
backed by a defense that did not allow
a Costa Mesa runner pa.st second base.
Mike WiJlson, who walked,
advanced to second on a passed ball in
the bottom ol the first, and Millian also
walked. But they were left stranded.
Costa Mesa also stranded Andrew
Niles in the fourth, while another,
Millian, was stranded in the sixth.
Mike Willson, wbo started at second
base, came up wtth Costa Mesa's lone
hit. He sent a high chopper toward
second base and beat out the throw to
first. Niles' hard-'hit ground ball caused
an error in the bottom of the fourth,
but other than that, Amaral was ln
command.
·u·s crushing,• Scott Willson said of
the loss. •1t just goes back to the fun-
dame ntals and putting the bat on the
ball. We weren't doing il. •
Costa Mesa catcher Cody Spoulos
and third baseman Andy Venegas
completed electrifying defensive plays.
In lhe top of lhe third, Spoulos tagged
out a sliding Kenny Miller, who was
attempting to score from third on Nolan
Marcucd's weak ground ball to Millian.
Marcuca spnnted to hrst, trying to get
on board on a fielder's ch01ce. But. he
turned toward the infield after touching
the bag and Spoulos made the quick
lhrow to Andy Dawson for the out at
first, ending the inrung.
Venegas ended the fifth inning
when he jumped up to glove a tugh
chopper that appeared to be headed for
left field. He then sent a dart to hrst for
the out.
Luke Boulger, Costa Mesa's starting
third baseman, assisted on two putouts
m the first inning. One was a line drive
off the glove off Millian that Boulger
quickJy picked up and made the throw
to Dawson. Mike Willson, playing
second base, also assisted on two
putouts in the second.
