Whether under way in a race

After the 1957 Honolulu

the Carver 406 motor yacht I was skippering from
Bayport Yachts in Newport to Cabrillo Isle Marina

The couple just had their Carver 406 trucked from the
Great 'Lakes to Newport Beach, and they were very excited to
see the ocean's marine life on their maiden Pacific voyage. I
did not have the heart to tell them that we were luclcy to see
this many mammals. Also, 1 was surprised that we did not
see any Navy vessels off Camp Pendleton.

This week I will be beading to Avalon a

story for next week's column.

that turned out very successful. Seventy

Of course, we can never give the chamber's special event

The evening's first guest speaker was this year's chamber

representatives from the Southern California Marine Assn.
O.W Geoffroy. executive director. and Stacy freemen,

prepare their presentations.
Then it was time for our main speaker, nm Colllna, who
is Newport Beach's first chairman of the new Harbor
Commission. nm was well prepared and-an easy going
speaker who outlined the commission's mission. This was an
excellent forum for nm to reach out to the marine
community and personally explain how everyone can be
involved i.n the decision malting process.

explaining how to access the commission's minutes and

fishing out the lucky people's business cards.
• ••
11p of the week is for every boater to make safe passage
through the harbor with the hundreds of sailboats in the
summer classes and races.
First. the harbor is open to everyone and technically no
one can block any portion of navigable waters unless
granted a special event permit by the United States Coast
Guard.
With that said, I have noticed that sailing programs are
making an effort to leave room between their buoys and the
shore for "sea room" passage. However. in a few instances I
have been blocked, QOt by the racers, but by the committee
or spectator boats drifting outside the course into the
passage lanes.
Boaters cruising through the harbor need to plan ahead
and try to avoid the sailing course by planning a course
outside of the markers. Please watch for the beginner sailor
who may loose control and drift in front of your vessel
Sometimes it is impossible to avoid the Oeet or if a vessel is
in the middle of sailboats, then everyone needs to be
courteous, as p~bed by maritime law and right of way
dictates for all vessels.
The sallors do not need to be waving and yelling for the
boat to move and harsh words do not need to be exchanged.
Everybody should stay calm and try to get the vessel through
the Oeet without tempers Oaring. Seamanship and good
sportsmanshlp are what we need to be instilling as boaters.
and there will always be another day, t hope.
Safe Voyages.

The City Council will con.kier tonight a

The council unanimously decided In ·

red lights. Council members said it was the

that won their endorsement.
City staff members have recommended a

every $271 fine captured by the system, a

Similar surveillance systems are
controversial In part because of the
agreements that cities sign with private
companies that install and operate the
systems. The companies mail out the
tidcets and get a share of the money
collected from them.
The council has said it puts saving lives

AUTHORITY CHECK
Councilman Gary Monahan will ask the
council to consider an amendment to an
e>eisting policy that limits the time city
staffers can spend on projects not endorsed
by the City Council.
Despite the criticism he received for
bringing this ltem forward regarding
previous actions of the Planning
Commission, Monahan said he felt it was
Important to clarify the rules for all council
appointed commissions and committees.
He is recommending that all committees
and commissions be included the

may not spend more than four hours on an
item that has not been approved by the
council.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The council is expected to approve the
changes.
Traffic officials will present a report to the
council tonight detailing the results of an
~astside traffic monitC?ring program
designed to track the Increase or decrease
in trafflc on seven roadway segments.
The Eastside of Costa Mesa is generally
described as the area of the city east of
Newport Boulevard made up mostly of
_ homes, with the exception of 17th Street -
a major thoroughfare that is home to' a
number of businesses. Because of their
simple gijststructure, the smaller streets in
the East!f!~e, like Orange and Santa Ana
avenues, have become popular with drivers
looking to avoid Newport Boulevard.
According to a staff report, the traffic
volumes have not increased dramatically in
the area but volumes are higher than
expected on the seven street segments.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The council is expected to receive and file
this report and direct traffic officials to

Games at the Fair
require a bit of
expertise.
By Jennifer K Mahal
Daily Pilot ' s tep right up and win a prize," said the barker
at Bowf·a·Rama in
carnival central at the Orange
C.ounty Fair. "For $5, if you
don't win, you get something
anyway."
Well, I thought, thats a way
to ensure that you can't lose.
There's something about the
midway games at the fair that
calls to my pocketbook. It's not
the stuffed Squarebob
Spongepants or the framed
poster of Matt Damon. It's not
even the mini felt Scooby Doo I
now wish I had won. I think it's
the excitement of competition.
I tried out five game at the
fair on a warm sunny morning.
and to my surprise, I walked
out with four prizes-three
stuffed animals of varying.
albeit small, sizes, and a
squishy ball in a net Of course,
I was $21 lighter in the wallet
The first game I played was
the Bowl-a-Rama in the
Carnival section. A clutter of
fishbowls Ooat on the surface
of a small pond. A few of the
bowls are colored -red, whJte
and yellow. The object of the
game is to throw a ping-pong
ball into the bowl, thus
ensuring youc prize.
~BY CRYSTAL LAUOEROAl..E/DM.Y PILOT
Jerry Antisdel of Garden Grove gets ready to toss a fast one at a row of beer bottles at the fair's ~Bust booth.
The prizes at this particular
booth were stuffed shaggy
d~ of all sius. They were
cute. There's a similar game in
the ldddJe camtval, though,
that has Scooby Ooo dolls. a
personal favorite.
You get a small prize for getting
the ball in the red bowl a
medium prize for the yellow bowl
and a large prit.e for the blue
bowl. There are few blue bowls.
For $2 you get eight balls.
For $5, you get 25 ping-pong
balls and are guaranteed a
prize. I threw 25 ping-pong
balls, only Lo waLch 25
ping-pong balls bounce
cheerfully away. Not a single
one did I land. lf I had it to do
over again, I'd gently arc the
balls more and aim for the red
cup in the middle. It doesn't
move.
I tried the Beer Bust next,
throwing softballs at a panel of
beer bottles. You get two balls
for S2 or six for $5. It seemed
easy after my first throw. when
l broke a bottle. Then I tried
. again and again and again -
you have to break two to win a
prize -and realized that no
major, minor or other league
team will ever come scouting
for me.
Though it was a bust for me,
the Beer Bust did have some of
the coolest prizes, including a
Shrek doll that I kinda wanted,
then realized it would take up
too much space on my desk at
work.
I fared much better at darts
in the Balloon Bust It's $2 for
one dart or SS for three. I went
for the three, figuring I would
need the chances.
I burst a balloon on the first
try. though my other two tries
were duds, and walked away
with a cute white teddy bear
that plays an annoying
rendition of "Happy Birthday"
if you press its hand. Someone
will be getting that as a white
elephant gift this Ouistmas.
Having cried my luck with
the adult carnival, I decided to
see if the ldddie carnivar games
were any easier. The answer is,
not really, although many or
the games give kids a prize just
for playing.
At Tip-Em-Over, I threw
three bean ~ at a stacked
trio of cups and only managed
to .knock one over. I did get a
small red dog for my $5 worth
of effort Next time I will aim
for the center. Who am I
kidding, next time I will avoid
the games in which I have to
throw thing&
The last midway game I
played was the one I wanted to
win the most, because it had
frog prince dolls. Having kissed
enough frogs, I thought it'd be
nice to get one with a crown.
But even though I spent $2 and
sank the basketball into the net
at Jr. } lotshots, that was only
enough to win me a small
squishy balJ in a net
Apparently, you have to get
three baskets to win one of the
dolls. I d ecided I didn't want to
watch myself miss again and
called it a day.
Of all the midWa.ys I've ever
been to, I won helter prizes
with less effort at the Orange
C.ounty Fair. Now, if only I
could find a basketball
player ....

Creating baskets for every occasion

eliminating yet another more personal chal·

While she makes wine, cheese and pasta bas·

and sympathy baskets, Jones admits that the
baby baskets make her feel the best TIED UP
Having fashioned her artistic drive and love
of crafts into a part-time career, Tina Jones bas
become proficient at creating feelings of sym·

day. •
"You have to have an eye for this," she said.
"You get used to placing the Items and every
day's a learning experience."
And despite her affection for them, Jones
sald that often the auction baskets give her the
biggest challenges. .
With customers bringing In large and ex·
travagant items, Jones has had to use her crea-

challenges, all of which, she has persistently
tried to overcome.
That learning experience keeps Jones inter·

"I thought. ~ I going to be able to do this,"'
Jones said. "But I did it and I'm proud.''
BUSY TIMES
One of her biggest: she couldn't tie a bow.
Initially, Jones needed 20 minutes to tie a
bow; now, the basket builder has honed her
bow-tying slcills to under two minutes.
Creating 15 to 20 gift baskets on a normal day

She also is proud of how she has developed

By Steve Vlr1en
·Daily Pilot
With a bid to earn the final spot In the
Dlstrlct 2 Bronco Section Tournament, the
Newport Harbor Baseball AssociaUon AJJ-
Stars made their huge statement in the sev-
enth inning Sunday at Harvard Park.
''' They scored six runs and came from be-
hind to defeat La Mirada. 16-13, finhhing
third in the District 2 Bronco All-Star Tour-
"hament of 11-and 12-year-olds.
"1bat was heart," NHBA Manager Ron
D'Cruz said of his team's winning perform-
ance. "We made som e errors, and so did (La
Mirada). But we came up with some clutch
hitting. (The win) has everything to do with
attitude. At the 11-l 2 age level it's pretty
much evenJy matched. It's just heart and
desire that leads lo the win."
Danny Moskovits showed plenty of de-
sire, as he hammered out his second and
third home runs or the season. First, he sent
WET AND WILD
a two-run shot over the rtght-centerfield
fence In the first inning for a 3-0 lead. Then,
with rwo out and R.J. D'Cruz and Peter
I lapk.e aboru:d, Mosk.ovits smacked a first
pitch over left field for a three-run blast that
Ued the score, I 0-10, in the top of the fifth.
La Mirada answered with a run in the
bottom ot the fifth, and NHBA exploded in
the top or the seventh.
The NI IBA All-Stars batted around in the
seventh. Brock. Schuler. who pitched the fi.
naJ three innings, scored, as did Hapke, R.J.
D'Cruz, Moskovits, Niko Hemand~~ and
Troy Seber.
Schuler led off the inn1ng with a waUc.
1 lapke reached on an infield error and
D'Cru7. loaded the bases with blooper to
right center for a slngle. With one out. Mos-
kovits sent a hard-hit ground ball toward
fmt base, that went off the glove or the la
Mirada first-baseman. Schuler and Hapke
came around to score. Ben FrclZier collected
an RBI groundout. Hernandez, who played
in left field, singled to right for another RBI,
and Nick Svendsen secured the victory with
a two-run double to the right field comer.
"The k.lds never gave up," Ron D'Cruz
i>aid. "That's evidenced by their perform-
ance (Sunday), and (Saturday), we scored
11 ~ in the fourth to mercy Anaheim B,
whJch also showed heart."
The NHBA All-Stars opened the game
with a 4-0 lead. They also scored three runs
in the third and three runs 1n the ftfth, while
La Mirada led 5·4 after the lirst and went on
to score one run in the second, three in the
third and one in each or the fourth and fifth
innings. La Mirada also posted two more
runs In the seventh. but that. was not
enough.
Moskovits finished 4 for 4 and also
reached on an error in the third. He scored
four runs and earned seven RBis. Jn addi-
tion. Moskovits served d uty on the mound
for the first four innings, logging 95 pitches
and recording three strikeouts.
•Everyone was hitting well," Ron D'Cruz
said. "From (the batting lineup) I through
9, everyone dld thelr part."
Hapke, the leadoff hitter, scored three
runs, R.J. D'Cruz scored twice and collected
two hits. Erik Bonn scored and earned an
RBI slngle in the first inning. Fra7.ier roped a

The Newpon Harbor Mustang A (9· and 10-
year-old) All-Star team has outscored its first two
District 2 opponents 35-5, and !aced Dana Point
A in the district finals Sunday.
"Our kids have been hitting for awhile In other
tournaments as well," said Newport Manager
Rich Hogan. M It's been a total team effort."
Newport defeated St. Hedwig, 16-2, In the dis-
trict opener and humbled Fountain Valley, 19·3,
in their second tournament game.
•The coaches on the other team were pretty
impressed when they saw our hitters," Hogan
said. ~It's bee n more doubles than anything else,
more line-drive gaps."

Newport Beach National 9-1 Os fall
Though the score didn't turn 'out the way he
wanted It, Manager JC.en Gerdau of the Newport
Beach National 9· and lO·year·old All -Stars was
still pleased with his team's effort Saturday after·
noon, a day after his team suffered a 7-6 extra-
Inning defeat at the hands ot Laguna Hills In a
loser's bracket semJftnal in the Uttle League Dis-
trict 55 Area 8 All-Stars Tournament.
·They went a lot further than I expected, it was
a great etTon," Gerdau said.
With the score tied 6-6 In the bottom of the
seventh and Laguna Hills' ·runners on second
and third, Gerdau decided to intentionally walk
the next batter to load the bases, creating a dou·
ble-play situation.
Strategically, Gerdau said it was the right
move, but it didn't materialize. The pitch wound
up a little too close to the plate and the hitter
blasted the ball over the center fielder's. head,
gjviilg Laguna Hills the win.
"With runners on second and third, It made a
ground ball double· play siruation," Gerdau said.
Newport led 6-3 going into the bottom of the
fifth, but Laguna HJUs fought its way back. scor·
ing two in the ftrth and one In the sixth to tie it
before winning it in the seventh.
The see-saw battle bad Laguna Hilla taking an
early 2-0 lead, but Newport reaponded wtth three
in the top of the thlni to tab the lead and aoored
another in the fourth to go up, 4·2. Laguna Hille
cut the lead to 4-3 before Newport lnaeued the
lead to 6·3.
John Doering pitched slx tnnlnga anddded an
RBI double, while Jack Gercf.a,u had two hill and
Pa.fk.er Stone knocked ln two run& Cameron Ko-nara had two RBis for Newport, u well.
