PETS OF THE WEEK
Kittens
These kittens need a home,
says DiAnna Pfaff-Martin,
founder of the Newport
Beach-based Community
Animal Network.
"Because of our wonderful
foster home program. our
organization is known for
delivering very loving and
affectionate pet quality rescue
animals." Pfaff-Martin said.
"However, this group's caring
but unknowing new foster
mom remembered her dad
saying, 'Don~ Touch The
Babies.' So she didn't, causing
them to be so afraid that
they actually tremble in fear
with touch. We have
separated the titter into twos
to give them a loving hand in
socializing them properly.
Please calJ to consider giving
a home to these special needs
kitties."
The network also needs
funds and a home for an
orange female kitten that
suffered a broken leg after
being hit by a car on
Jamboree Boulevard, she said.

NEWPORT BF.ACH -
Valerie Gilb literally walks
the talk.
Four years ago, she learned
that her best friend was
diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis. And since then, the
Newport Beach resident has
participated regulaily in
National Multiple ScJuosis
Society walb, outdoing herself
when it comes to soliciting
sponsorship every time.
Her first wallc with the Orange
County Otapter was three years
aAQ. for which she raised $4,400.
Her second happened a year
later, for which she garnered
$8,100.
For.her annual wallc last April
in Huntington Beach, Gilb raised
$10,367, officials from the
society this month announced.
This makes her the fourth
highest fund-raiser for the
Orange County chapter, and an
extremely supportive best friend.
"She thinks it's great," the
graphic designer said of her
friend "I told her, 'That's what
friends are for."'
Gilb also raised the money in
honor of another friend -a
friend of her dad's wife who was
diagnosed about two years ago.
In her Jetter to potential
sponsors, who included friends
and family and co-workers, she
explained she was participating
in the wallc for two
dose-to-home reasons.
The letter also read "They say
the third time is a charm" and
that she hoped to break her own
monetary record
"I mailed about 120 letters
and got about 98 responses
back," Gilb said.
The average donation was
about $50. She also had a
handful of large donations at
about $500 each.
HNo amount is too small," the
walker said. "I receive everything
from a single dollar on up."
Gilb walks and swims
regularly and is a "kinda average
fit person." She didn't train
separately for the 1 OK walk. but
didn't get tired through it either.
Her best friend, who lives in Los
Angeles, walked with her the
first year, but now walks in LA.
Gilb was accompanied by
three other friends during the six
miles.
When asked what she thought
about while taking her sbides,
she gave a simple answer.
"Just that I was doing this for
my friend," Gilb said

That's because a couple of

But if that great fish doesn't

In June, an emergency order
from the feds put a halt to
commercial fishing of the
California coast for certain
varieties of roclcfish, including
red snapper. That action, absent
a hastily arranged reprieve for

Newport dory Oeet an

offshore fishing bans they're
mulling over. I mean, it's not like
they'd be setting a precedent
here. The government is forever
handing out either subsidies or
exemptions or waivers to whole
industries that would otherwise
suffer under. or die, from the
weight of government
paternalism.
But understanding that these
great whales seldom -if ever -
dispense reprieves on their own;

heavyweights weigh in on the

pressure federal regulators for an

Given what the dory Oeet
means to the heritage and
culture of Newport Beach, we
need all hands on deck to grab a
bucket and start bailing.

This was a staged event
and was brought about by an
e-mail that went out to various

on them to show up lo
confront "racism and
homophobia."
In fact. what's really going on
is that the November e~on
is coming up, and Allan
Mansoor, who was one of the
committee members who was
asked to resign, is a candidate
for City Council.
He was the real target of
these extremists, who know
that his tough on crime,
quality of life and
improvement views may carry
the day for him in November.
In other words. this was a
preemptive strike by
extremists.
Unfortunately for these
extremists. they've alienated
many people in the city and
are bringing many good,
decent citizens to Mansoor, if
the comments I'm hearing in
the community are any clue.

Newport bas prided itself in
this tournament on pitching and
defense, according to Rovzar,
who said it won't stray from that
formula
"People are always backing up
and in a position to make plays
and the pitching has been great,"
Rovzar sald.
Ouis Rosen has thrown 12 in·
nings and allowed only one run
in All-Star play, while Scott Col-
ton hasn't allowed a walk in his
two games in the tournament.
Colton, who was sidelined for
six weeks with a shoulder injury.
pitched a complete game, strik-
ing out six in a 7-4 win over Ran-
cho Santa Margarita He then
pitched nine more innings
against lake Forest, recording
three strikeouts on 110 pitches.
Rovzar ·said he intended to
throw Colton six innings. but
continued to use him in the extra
innings because. "He was rolling
and hadn't thrown that many
pitches."
RCNL.ar hopes the bats will
come alive soon. but is pleased
with the defense and pitching.
·At this stage, I'm happy to
have the opportunity to keep the
same chemistry of solid pitching
and great defense going,· RoVUlT
said. "I lopefully. we'U get to
where we've not been before.·
That promised land Is a five-
team Orange County champion-
ship tournament that Ro\IUlT
said begins Saturday at Hunting-
ton Valley LlnJe League in Hun-
tington Beach.
CdM played Dana Point Tues-
day. If victorious. they would
play Friday at 7:30 p.rn. A loss
would send them to a Thursday
game at 5 p.m.
