Great weather, powerful

dangerous combination
at the beach this
weekend, officials say.

NEWPORT BF.ACH -Hot, beautiful
weather and strong, storm-powered
surf are expected to create the worst of
both wodds for lifeguards this week-
end.
Newport Beach lifeguards will be
out in full force on Saturday and Sun-
day as the sun.shine draws in the
crowds and the waves drag them out
-conditions local officials are calling
•extremely hazardous.•
"We plan to be fully staffed this
weekend, which includes all 38 life·
guard towers, and we might even add
some extra roving lifeguards.". New·
port Beach Lifeguard U. Rob Williams
said.
Morning haze is expected on Satur·
day, and partly cloudy conditions
could persist throughout the day on
Sunday. But some perfect beach
weather will fall in between, with
highs in the mid-70s both days. ln in-
land parts of Costa Mesa, tempera-
tures are expected to be well into the
80s.
A faraway hurricane is expect~ to
compound the burden on the life-
guards. Hwricane Elida. now about
l,300 miles southeast of Newport
Beach, will probably send some seri·
ous waves this way by Saturday. As of
Thursday, Elida's winds were raging at
about 160 mph.
·it's very likely that will affect New·
port by the weekend.· said Stan Wa·
sowslci.. a forecaster for the National
Weather Service.
Thursday proved a rough preview of
thin&' to come. Already, surf from the
tropical depressjon Douglas hit New-
port Beach shores, jacking up waves
that had been about waist high and
bringing lO·foot sets to the Wedge.
Riptides and a strong side current
were churning up the water.
This combination of conditions is
expected to dramatically increase the
number of rescues lifeguards will have
to perform throughout the weekend.
Last weekend, fewer than 20 people
had to be retrieved from local waters.
But this weekend could see the rescue
count jump-as high as 200 to 400 a
4ay. .
On Thursday alone. there were
about 200 rescues, said F.ric Bauer,
lifeguard captain~
Injuries loduded a broken collar·
bone, a person with a rapid heartbeat
and one child who was taken to Hoag
Hospital with a minor, noo-swf-re-
lated injury.
In all. the lifeguards did a great job,
Bauer said, adding that he expects the
same today. .
At least 70 lifeguards will share the
lifesaving responsibility. In addition to
the tower guanls, about 10 beach pa·
trol vehicles will each be staffed with
one or two lifeguards each. Three life-

Suggestions for Triangle
Square improvements
I would love to see an
Applebee's Restaurant there. I
love Applebee's Restaurant, and
there aren't any near us in
Orange County, the closest being
Fountain Valley.
Also I would Hke easier access
for people with disabilities or
with strollers in Triangle Square.
I would love to shop at the Gap
but have to walk a whole city
block to get to the front door, it's
just too much. I don't
understand why they can't have
an entrance directly from the
garage into the Gap. It would be
a lot easier to get around.
Anyway, I hope they make some
improvements. It 's a nice
shopping center, but it needs a
lot of work.

I think they should have a
bowling alley and a nightclub
downstairs where the market
used to be.

Former committee
member disappointed
I was a member of the Costa
Mesa Human Relations
Comminee from 1993 to 1999,
and I am very disappointed to
read that the very comminee that
was created to foster harmony in
such a diverse community as
ours has in fact become the
cause for disharmony.
If there are any members on
the Human Relations Committee
with an agenda other than
MAILBAG
carrying out the mission and
goals of the committee, they
should tender their resignation
now.

Pilot's new look gamers
kudos and suggestions
Congratulations to the Daily
Pilot for your new "Your Work
Week" section.
With an emphasis on business,
the section is an outstanding
service to the many businesses
in the Newport Beach-Costa
Mesa community.
As this area continues to
mature, business plays a
fundamental, but important part
in its success. The Dally Pilot
staff has taken a proactive step
to make this publication more
relevant to today's active·
employers and employees, as
well as to the consum er.
We at the Newport Beach
Clamber of Commerce applaud
the Daily Pilot for looking to the
future of our community and
providing an important new
addition to its successful
publication.

I'm just getting used to the
new look of the Pilot. Otange is
inevitable, so I guess change is a
good thing.
I used to thtow the Pilot when
I was a kid back in Huntington
Beach when the Pilot was over in
Huntington Beach aJso. I'm an
airline pilot and the only thing
that I want left over.when I come
back home are the three days
worth of Daily J>llots to find out
what's going on in the local area.
You guys do a great job.
Now with that said, here is my
comment. What is the criteria
for whether or not you put an
address relating with a story?
I would submit that
historically that's the one thing I
have a bard time with.
When we're talldng about
various projects in and around
the city, there's no indication as
to where they are or even a
general area. For example, the
Habitat for Humanity project,
which I've been following, it
would be nice to know generally
where that is.
Anyway, keep doing what
you're doing with the Pilot. Put
those addresses and those
cross-sueets in there and maps, I
love maps.

Is something amiss with
city's reclaimed water?
J was wondering if anyone else
in the Newport Beach area that
has a homeowners association
such as ours utilizing reclaimed
water to keep the green belts
watered and watering the plants,
has any kind of illness appearing
with their animals.
My cat that eats the grass
outside over the last few months
has gone through a series of
increased vomiting, upset
stomach and someone
mentioned to me that it could
possibly be some chemicals in
the water, and I was wondering if
anyone else in the area was
experiencing that kind of effect.

The view is the same as the Balboa Bay Club's face lift goes into its final stages.
Pilot p erpetuates Bay Club bashing
By Beverly Ray
H aving read yet another misleading
letter to the editor, irresponsibly
printed. despite the editor's
knowledge of the true facts of the matter,
I find it impossible to hold my silence any
longer.
The Balboa Bay Oub has never played
any roJe in water poUution, and it is most
unfair for lhe Daily Pilot to continue
spreading rnisWormation that the Balboa
Bay Oub has done so.
Any right-thinking person realizes that
it would be completely ridiculous for a
company operating on the bay to do
anything 10 spoil the water there.
It is in the Balboa Bay Oub's best
interest to see that the water of Newport
Bay is as clean and clear of pollution as it
can be, and we do all in our power to see
that we do not harm.
The sulphurous odor that one
occasiona!Jy notices when soil is moved
comes up from the soil and is indigenous
to all properties along Coast Highway. not
just the Balboa Bay Oub property.
It is caused by decaying organic
COMMUNITY
COMMENTARY
material and is completely normal,
though unpleasant at times, for this pan
of Newport Beach. The odor ls present
from time to time all along the Mariner's
Mile area. even when there Is no
construction activity.
The Balboa Bay Oub has operated
continuously for over 50 years as good
neighbor to Newport Beach. Most people
in this area have wann f~ toward the
BBC as it holds many happy memories of
events attended and sunny days spent here
enjoying the beach and bay. not lo mention
the many ways in which the Balboa Bay
Oub supports the local community.
I am truly disappointed 10 read these
false statements and accusations
perpetuated by the Daily Pilot. Maybe it
sells newspapers. but it ls dishonest and
the Pilot knows it.

One billion, 452 million,

Thursday, they celebrated
their golden wedding

"It always seem ed like a

The ceremony took place
in front of the couple's close

Edmund Werner, chaplain

renewed their vows, sipped

"I lere's to your continued

toasted the couples. "May
you be an inspiration to each

travel life·s highway."
The couple with the most

Jones Cup III
heats up with
area's best
Competition has been tight in each of the first
two Jones Cups, and Jones Cu p III should be no
different today at Big Canyon Country Club.
Richard Dunn
Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Just as summer
arrived with its wann weather this week,
Jones Cup lll should be sizzling today in
the ultimate community men's
pro-am at Big Canyon Country
Oub at I p.m.
ln a popular format, a better
ball of partners, and rwo four-
somes teeing off back-to-back
with two galleries in tow, the
Jones Cup has proved unprec-
edented in these parts since the in-
augural event two years ago.
The Jones Cup, which features de-
fending champion Big Canyon, Mesa
Verde Country Oub, Newport Beach
Country Oub and Santa Ana Country
Oub. was launched as a way to spotlight
the Newport-Mesa community's direc-
tors of golf and head golf professionals,
as well as celebrate the men's club
champions, at the four private clubs in
the Daily Pilot circulation.
Each of the four clubs rotate as host
site of the Jones CUp and the Tea Cup
Oassic for women, which was started in
1997 under the auspices of the Aetcher
Jones Motorcars/Daily Pilot Oub Own-
pionshlp Series and will be played Sept.
4 at Santa Ana.
The public is invited to gallery at
Jones Cup Ill as long as individuals
meet the required ~ code. A food
and beverage cart (with bar) will ride
along with the galleries.
From Big Canyon, Director of Golf
Bob Lovejoy and men's club champion
Danny Lane will represent the home
follcs, while Mesa Verde enters with
bead pro Tom Sargent and senior sensa-
tion Pete Daley, the only amateur to tee
it up in all three Jones Cups. Mesa
Verde won the inaugural Jones
Cup in 2000 at Newport
Beach, when Sargent birdied
18 after a remarlcable Oop
shot with his ball deeply em-
bedded into the thick rough.
Sargent earned local legend
status that year, then Lovejoy and
Big Canyon amateur Ron Maggard cap-
tured Jones Cup II in a three-hole play-
off against Santa Ana, which will bring
the same pro-am team as last year -Di-
rector of Golf Mike Reehl and two-time
men's club champion Gregg Hemphill.
Santa Ana rallied to tie Big-Canyon
last year and fon::e a playoff, as Hem-
phill birdied the par-5 No. 15 and par-4
16 on his home course and Reehl bird-
ied the par-5 18, which he almost eagled
with a 3-wood from the fairway.
Lovejoy ended the playo.ff last year
with a birdie at 18, a dogleg left and an
excellent finishing hole with water on
the left and players going for it in two
on the 21st bole with champagne await-
ing.
