Spooky Tooth's second al-

Wright went solo for a

I tuned in LO the Planning
Commission meeting July 22 to hear
the members going on ad nauseam
about inspections for rental properties
in our city based 6n a Santa Ana
model The plan was to inspect aU
rental properties in the city and charge
a fee to the owner to do so. These
inspections would have nothing to do
with complaints or overt violations,
just as a routine inspection. nus is just another example of the
attempted "lrvine-ization" of Costa
Mesa.
I have lived in Costa Mesa for the
last 32 years. I own three properties on
the F.astside, so I assure you that if I
chose to live in Irvine or South County
or the walled cities of Huntington
Beach, I could, but I support
individual freedom and accept that if I
want to enjoy my private property as I
see fit, I must accept my neighbor's
right to do the same.
I am not quite sure when things
started changing. maybe it was back
when we started regulating garase
sales. How many more code
enforcement officers did we hire to do
that? Every day I see the code
enforcement cars in my
neighborhood, it feels like the secret
police. And there are so many new
regulations all the time, no one could
keep up with them.
Six months ago. I received a notice
to replace my roof in 30 days.
The roof didn't look great. but it
didn't leak. The rest of the house had
been in the process of an upgntde illd
the roof was an eventual fix. but I was
forced to borrow the money to 8x It
then. Something is just not right with
the cUy telling people where to park
their campers, and what they can do
in their own back.yards.
I will be choosing the candidates I
vote for very carefully at the next

El Toro plan won't be able to pay for itself
T he city of Irvine and the Navy's

deceptive ("Pro-airport forces blast

Premature. because WJtil the lawsuit
against~ w is decided. the zoning
for that property might not be ronsi.1tent
with the so-called Qeat Park plan.
The plan is deceptive because, just
like Measure W. it does not have
concrete ways to pay for the projects
without using public tax funds.
Does Irvine really expect developers
to pay top dollar for the land they are
allowed to develop and believe they
will then provide the funding and
maintenance costs for an enormous
public project as well? I don't thinlc so.
Olances are taxpayers will be asked to
foot the bill, and if they don't there
goes the elusive park plan.

Columnist should label himself irresponsible
W hat is with columnist Steve

His column with his "advice" to
high school graduates about not going
to college because college is for
suckers and to send graduation
announcements to anyone you know,
and even those you do not know,
because they will send you money,
and other rather unusual items was
bad enough ("A curt list of tips for

Now, in his column Saturday about
Samantha Runnion's kidnapping and
murder, he calls those he interviewed
"ignorant" because they planned to
take action to prevent Samantha's fate
from happening to their own-children
("No reason to let fear tear you apart."
Saturday).
Even if the number of incidents of
stranger abduction is low, it is
irresponsible to not educate and warn
children of potentially dangerous
situations. Smith seems to believe this
is only done with fear and aruciety, not
with love and concern. Maybe he
should interview the Lomita residents
whose son was almost abducted by a

I would venture to guess that if
Smith surveyed his readers and asked
how many had been "offered candy,"
asked to help find a lost pet, or merely
followed by a stranger. or experienced
a "close caU; he would receive a
surprisingly high number of responses.

Major All-Stars in a best-of-three se-
ries with Garne l today at 5:30 p.m. at
TeWtnlcle School, the National's
home field.
Game 2 will be Wednesday at 5:30
p.m. at Costa Mesa High, the Ameri-
can home field, and if necessary.
Garne 3 will take place Thursday at
5:30 p.m. at TeWin.lde School.
Costa Mesa American holds a 3-2
overalJ series record . Last year Costa
Mesa National beat CM America, 4-2,
in the Cup's first three-game series. In
the third and deciding game, CM Na-
tionaJ's P.J. Errington clobbered two
home runs for three RBis.
Costa Mesa National Manager Bill
Redding coached last year's National .
team and said there's just as much
pressure during the Mayor's Cup as
in district All -Star tournaments.
"You want to beat the kids you
know because these kids will face
each other in their high school ca-
reers," Redding said. "It's nice to say
you won and fortunately last year we
did."
As in AU-Stars, Redding said decid-
ing the positions of each player d~
ing the Mayor's Cup can be difficult
since several players who played the
same position on their respective
regular-season teams find them -
selves alongside one another in All-
Stars.
"You might have six shortstops that
you have to figure out positions for,"
Redding said. "It's not as easy as it
.-looks. It talces some adjustment"
CM American Manager Scott Will-
son could not be reached for com-
ment Monday.
CM American pitchers Andy Daw-
son and Andrew Niles teamed up for
four strikeouts in the team's opening-
game loss to Ocean View in the Dis-
trict 62 All-Star Tournarnent earlier
this month as Cody Spoulos, Luke
Boulger, Jesse 'Dawson and Niles sin-
gled in the 10-2 game. with Boulger
and Dawson scoring runs.
CM National won their District 62
All-Star Tournament opener, 1-0, but
lost their next two tournament
games to Huntington Valley and
Fouritaip Valley.
In the 3-1 loss to Huntington Val-
ley, CM National starting pitcher
Brandon Maurer had eight strikeouts
SEAN HIUER I DAILY PILOT
Pitcher Andy Dawson is one of Costa Mesa Little League American Al~tars' major weapons.
while walling only three .
Maurer will be on the hill for CM
National today as Justin Long is
scheduled to start Wednesday for CM
National. Redding said.
The Mayor's Cup ~ in 1997,
when CM American's Tigers' Man-
ager Pat Maguire asked then-CM
American Uttle League presJdent
ICirlc Bauermeister If the two All-Star
teams from Costa Mesa Uttle League
could play each other.
Within five days of Maguire's ln-
quiry and further discussions with
CM National officials, the Mayor's
Cup was born.
The winning team will be pre-
sented with the Mayor's Cup at the
end of the tournament, and the cup
will be pn display during regular sea-
son games next year.

Rawilns lives
in Newport
Beach and
celebrated his
• ninth
birthday
aboard bis
father's deluxe
yacht, the Malwlo, an Ocean 55,
on Saturday.
Grant invited some of his
friends along to share In a day of
fishing off the Huntington Beach
Oats.
SPORTS Tuesday, liy 30, 2002 A7 ·
Ano ther tropical storm that
developed below Baja is
expected to bring even warmer
water off the coast with a good
chance that the bluefin tuna bite
will get golng by this weekend.
On board with Grant were
fellow Newporters Jonathan
Keedy, Mike Moorhead, Jak:~
HaU, John Davenport, Ryan
Lawler and their fathers, as wen
as hostess Lucy Rawlins for the
birthday party.
Dr~~ Lawter, right, holds a nice size Albacore with his son, Ryan, after the two found a ~chool of the fish cruising the east end of San
Clemente Island. Albacate are now within a day's range of the Newport fleet of fishing ~oats and hopefully will stick around.
Drew Lawler of Bay Shores
took his young son, Ryan, out for
his first albacore trip about the
Reel Salty, a 48-foot Pacifica
owned by Harvey Hunnitcutt.
Jigs were dropped in just a few
miles off the east end of the Sail
Oemente lsland it didn't take
more than five minutes of
trolling before one rod bent
under the pull of an·aJbacore.
Ryan was first to the rod and
after a short battle, decked a
16-pound longfin. Drew cast out
a bait rod and instantly got bit
on a sardine as the father and
son team scored on
back-to-back albies.
Stop after stop produced quality
fishing for all the boats trolling in
this area despite a rather bwnpy
ocean as the fish~ eager to
jump on a variety. of jigs. plugs. and
deep-running lures and ii didn't
hesitate to come strong to the boat
and bite live bait
The fish count for five anglers
for the day was a total of 21
albacore, of which 10 were
landed by 12-year-old Ryan.
Skipper Brandon Birtcher of
San Juan Capistranco headed
the yacht up the coast to look for
fish. It was a great day of fishing
for both kids and adults as sand
and calico bass bit well, along
with a wide variety of other
smaU game fish that brought
plenty or smiles to aU the
youngsters on board.
•There is quite a show going
on in Newport's upper back bay.
On the right high tide silver
mullet are dancing all over the
water and can be seen from
Jamboree Road and the path just
above the high tide mark.
Some fish are jumping as high
as four feet in the air, while others
are splashing a~ the surface of
the shallow back water.
It's not unusual to see mullet
jump in Newport Bay. but to see
so many fish explode into the air
in such a concentrated area is
something that this outdoor
writer has never witnessed.
It appears that good fishing off
the coast should continue
throughout the summer. There
were spots of 70-degree water
between the islands, lots of bait
and clean water should combine
to keep schools of tuna around
Most likely mullet are doing
this show of acrobatic
maneuvewrs as part of an
annual mating ritual, but
whatever the reason. it's worth
talcing a short drive to see the
dancing waters.

EAST SOlTTH WfST NOmt
Conaiden:d in a vacuum, South'• play in hearu was eminently eotreet.
But that is seldom the way one
should think at the brid~e table. Here East, who ~ onginaUy, has
shown u.p wuh the ace and king of
clubs and the opening lead has
madced East wuh a high diamond -
West would surely have led 1 dia-
mond holding the 1CC-kinJ. Give Eut the queen of hearu as well. and
the defender would surely have
opened the bidding. East would I.hen
have at least two and a half quick
tricks and 12 points in au.

South should have spumed the per-c:eroi.ge play in trumps in favor of

That would have landed the contract
