tried. she has clearly shown
she's not up to ow
considerable challenges."
Anyone elected to public
office mu.5t be aware her
actions will be scrutiniz.ed. My
concerns are for Costa Mesa.
my communications are neither
personal nor attacks. Four years
ago. I voted for Dixon; this time
around, I'll vote for someone
else. Here's why:
The Huscroft House: Dixon
fought valiantly to save and
IDOYe the Huscroft House to
Fairview Pa.de, arguing it had
great community value. Sbe held
a community meeting to rally
support and argued with passion
from the dais that restoration
could be led and largely done by
community volunteers and that
this would be a wonderful
community-unifying project
When the Home Ranch project
passed four months ago. the
Segerstroms committed $200,<XX>
to the project. yet no community
planning group bas even been
~up.
When asked about the
Huscroft House recendy,
Dixon referred the question to
staff. I think the community
could build two "replica"
homes for what it will take to
restore this Santa Ana legacy.
Noguchi Gardens: It is
incomprehensible to me that
Dixon fought with such
passion to protect the public
value of privately owned
Noguchi Gardens "in
perpetuity," but doesn't find
Costa Mesa's greatest natural
resource, Fairview Park.
worthy of similar protection.
Oearly, the "passive" viability
of Fairview Park is at much
greater risk and the park is
something this council can
protect any time it chooses.
Dixon has said our schools
are fine. Our schools are not
fine. It's a shame &tancla High
School canceled its exciting
program allowing qualified
students to take Orange Coast
College classes. It's a shame so
many Mesa Verde families
send their kids to alternative
schools. It's a shame our mean
performance isn't higbeL And
it's a shame the mayor doesn't
recognize the community
advantages in dramatically
improving educational
opportunities for Costa Mesa
kids.
Councilman Ouis Steel got
the Segerstroms to ante up for
the Huscroft House. Yet I don't
li&tow of a single time Dixon ilas supported,a prpp0sal of
Steel's. I find itinexplicable
that Dixon voted to
underwrite employment
opportunities for dayworkers
who don't live in Costa Mesa.
During the Home Ranch
debate; Dixon argued that
residents needed to attend
council meetings and show
support. She voted for Home
Ranch but quickly forgot many
residents S\Jpported it only
because we wanted to provide
the city revenues to pay for
important underfunded city
needs. All I asked was for the
council to bring in ow true
community leaders to build a
consensus as to how this
money should be spent
Costa Mesa's annual budget
ls now m ore than $100
million. It's time to elect
council members who will
take budget deliberation
seriously. Dixon has been on
the council for four years, and
it appears her least favorite
subject, based upon questions
asked, is the budget
Dick Mehren's Fairview Park
grqup worked for 17 years.
copsidering every imaginable
use for the park. When his
committee presented the
"passive use" Fairview Park
Master Plan to the council,
Dixon inserted a bark park. .
How can anyone express
dismay that special interest
g#>ups are now asking for
tlfeir own perlcs?
I think it's time to let Costa
Mesa r~dents decide
whether we want to elect our
mayor.
Dixon is opposed to this. I'd
like to see us elect a full-time
mayor at a salary of$100,000
a year. but right now I'd settle
for one more council member
who's up for the challenge.

Picture of the Fourth of July Old
. Glory Boat Parade worth a look
The father of a family in Newport Beach
recently wrote to the Daily Pi!ot abolir-its-lad
of interest in the Juty 4 boat parade
(Community'C<>mmen!._ary. "Pilot should
have covered boat parade," July 16). That
family was certainly worth taking a picture of.
so I captured it with my basic camera. Maybe
it's worth a mention.

City should respect homeowners'
rights and keep its eyes on itself
I do have a car parked, sometimes covered
("Residents uniting against City Hall,"
Thursday). I will buy a car, restore it and keep·
it. It's not for sale, and for the city to tell me
what to do on tny property ... if they would
pay my truces and my house payment, then I
believe they would have something to say.
This is America, this is my land. not the city's.
If J do park the car or recreational vehicle
on the street, then yes, the city has the right
to teU me that I need to get it off its property.
But as it is, this is my property. my land -
that's the pride of being a homeowner.

ro keep a.car covered. I do understand the
problem that there are some ugly cars out
there that are not covered.
If the owners would get out there and cover
them. that would be great because some cars
are an eyesore and I agree with them. But when
I have a car covered. for them to tell me that I
need to either put it behind a brick wall or in
my backyard (which my backyard is not .
accessible to put a car in the way it is situated)
-and also there are two-story homes in my
area -and for them to say, from a two-story
window, it's an eyesore, again it's telling my
neighbors to look in my backyard. J don't look
in theirs, they shouldn't look i.r;i mine. This is
my home, my house, my property.
So please. if they pay my taxes again and
my house payment, I'd be more than glad to
put my car in my garage. There are a Jot of
people that restore classic cars and take them
and go to car shows and sometimes a two-car
garage is not enough. But when you have a
house that is not built for a three-or four-car
garage, you do the best thing. You get a nice
cover, keep it covered. keep the cobwebs
away and move it around from one parking
space to another in your driveway.
I appreciate the Daily Pilot staying on top
of this. You guys do a great job down there,
and that's the reason why l take the LA.

Don Regan, president of the Newport Beach
Tuxpayers Assn., insisted that the group will
take positions based oo balanced analyses of
issues and that its posidona will atrlve to be
representative or all Newport Beach tupayers.
"I would not say that it's pro-development,•
Regan said of the association. "It's pro-intelli-
gent use of taxes and our wonderful commu-
nity's resouroes.,. .
Members of Greenlight, who were behind
the passage of tbe city's sJow-growtb law that
limits the development of projects substan-
tially larger than allowed under the city's gen-
eral plan, also point to Ellis' involvement as
cause for skepticism. . ·
Ellis is not a member nor an employee of the
Newport Beach Tuxpayers A.wt., and Regan
said Ellis' relationship to the organization is
best described, as diat of an unpaid consultant
Ellis allowed the taxpayers' group to use his
bulk-rate postal code for its introductory mailer.
Ellis, an active supporter of taxpayer rights,
said on Monday that he supports the group's
ideals and that he might consider making a
contribution in the future.
Ellis also has aided the Qty Council cam.
paigns of Mayor Tod Ridgeway and Council-
man Gary Adams. both of whom Greenlight la-
bels as "pro-development"
Or. Jane Curtis, Dr. Mark Krugman and their daughter Allison visited
Glacier Bay, Alaska.
Wendy Clark of Costa Mesa and her son Jason Jacobi visited Paris.
Regan said the taxpayers association wilJ be
more concerned with issues than with candi-
dates. Though its role could evolve, at this
point the group bas no plans to endorse any
council candidates.
To that, Greenllght spokesman Phil Arst said,
"Groups that don't make clear their position on
issues make It harder to know who you're deal-ing with... .
Another area of concern, Greenlight mem-
be·rs said, is an inquiry underway into Airpon
Working Group's finances. On July 9, City
Councilman John Heffernan put in motion an
audit of the Airport Working Group and Citi-
zens for Jobs and the F.conomy tQ see how the
groups spent a $3.67-million grant earmarted
to educate residents about an El Toro airport.
Greenlight members also emphasize that
their group has advocated for taxpayer rights
in several ways. The group has asked the City
Council to streamline the costs of providing
city services, noting that the city's current staff
of about 740 full-time employees is about dou-
ble that of the average Orange County city.
Greenllght bas also participated in the city's
budget process.
Susan Wilson and Martha Beauchamp of Newport Beach visited Las
Vegas as the guests of war hero R.B. Alexander and his wife, Judi.
Bob Newberry, Doug Forde, Kathy Forde, Linda Green, nm Green and
Dianne Newberry, all of Newport Beach, visited the Emerald Isle.

who regularly posted opinions
on the site.
And so we're left stewing in
the question: What sparked this
train wreck in cyberspace? A few
things, I think.
On one front. the Concerned
Costa Mesa Citizens site became
increasingly dominated in its
posts and tone by the city's iras-
cible gadfly Martin Millard. Mil-
lard, a prolific writer and idea
factory, often tacked up a doun
posts a day railing against the
city's urban sores caused by an
eroding ~demographic" and
growing population of illegal im-
migrants drawn here by the city's
bounty of charitable organiza-
tions. Most of the site's visitors
and regular posters often agreed
with his theories, including
founder Davidson. ·
Now Millard's musings might
not have registered on the radar
screens of county civil rights ad-
vocates given the site's small
membership and relalive obscu-
rity outside Costa Mesa's city
limits. Except that when Millard's
numerous essays for the anti-im-
migration American Patrol Web
site, and also New Nation and
the Council of Conservative Citi-
zens -the latter two organiza-
tions often associated with white
S\lpremacy-came to light,
alarm bells began going off in
human relations circles. Indeed,
many of Millard's essays are
complex hand wringings over
the dilution of the white race at
the hands of massive illegal im-
migration and interracial breed-
ing.
Also, Costa Mesa resident and
City Council candidate Allan
Mansoor touched off a heated
controversy when he began

what she called bigoted and ho-

That prompted Orange

. The entire harangue was too
much for Davidson::-Millard -
the principal content contributor
to the site -simply disappeared.
Mansoor continued to defend
his positions. And the rest of the

return to the issues confronting
Costa Mesa -seemed to simply
give up.
Which is top bad, really. But
it's nonetheless symptomatic of
how difficult it's becoming in
this land to have debates and
share ideas without having our
sensibilities bruised or getting
our undergarments in a bunch.

COSTA MFSA-With sunglasses on and a smile on
his face, Brandon Maurer remained relatively calm
considering what he had just done.
Maurer was marvelous Tuesday at TeWlnkle

game of the sixth annual Mayor's CUp, 3·0, In the

"lbat's the best he's ever thrown," said Costa Mesa
National Manager Bill Bedding, who coached Maurer
in the regular season with the Diamondbacb. "He
throws a slider, fastball and a muclde-curve."
Maurer, who said he has thrown a no-hitter before,

"Brandon pitched an awesome game," said Costa

Ted Spoulos, coached the American team Tuesday in
place of Manager Scott Wtllson, who ls recovering
from a broken wrist be suffered last week.
Wtllson is expected to be bade managing today, ac-

Costa Mesa National scored two runs In the second

that bit the left side of the mound but stayed on a
fairly straight path and hit the second-base bag. The
ball caromed into center field for a single that scored
Grimmett, who bad reached on a looping single to

After Costa Mesa American pitcher Andrew Niles

Costa Mesa American showed some strong defense
in the third, as Costa Mesa National batter Anthony

a bloop single that Weber fielded and threw home to
catcher Cody Spoulos.
The alert Spoulos, seeing that Grimmett bad
started toward home, quickly fired to third baseman

Costa Mesa American made two sound defensive

Jerry Dawson believes the defense can improve for
