The Wilson Street Center will op-

and serve predominantly Wi1'lon
Elemenwy School students, said
Bill Gartner:, the pastor of Harbor
Christian Church. OfficiaJs hope to
open the center doors by mid-Sep-

said. "Wf!ve done enough long-
term studies; now it's time to
make it happen.•
Thi.nlc Tugether officials
launched the Wilson Street center
by following the footsteps of the
successful Shalimar and Pomona
learning center models. Laura

the Sbalimar Leaming Center·

neighborhood students but the
entire families, as her center does.

City C.Ouncil campaigns ln the
last six months, with Foley out-
campajgning her colleagues by
more than $2,000.
As required by state law, local
politicians -both elected and
aspiring -reported Wednesday
how much money they hold ln
speclally designated campaign
accounts. Rven those who are not
up for reelection were required to
report the balance of their clty·ls-
sued accounts by the end of the
business day Wednesday.
Foley raised a total of $6,000
cash. with the majority coming
from individual oontribudons
from fellow lawyers' and resi-
dents. She also recei\led a boost
from C.J. Segerstrom & Som to
the tune of $249. Foley bas spent
$351.06, leaving her ending bal-

make more of an impact in the
learning process also," Jo~on

Gartner said the family aspect is
already present for him, as he had
two children at Wilson Flemen-
tary. has lived in the area for more
than a decade and is the leader of
a dose-knit congregation.
MI've got a really vested inter-
est ln this area, and I'm antici-
pating some exciting changes,"
Gartner said.
Another vested group, which
also has an outreach office at
the church, is the UC Irvi.ne Out·
reach Center. While the out-
reach center is not a contractual
partner, its leaders feel they hold
an integral role in the center's
success. Administrators for both
the UCI Outreach Center and
the Wilson Street Leaming Cen-
ter will share office space, while
the actual tutoring will be done
in the separate classrooms.
UCI officials have committed
to helping the learning center re-
tain tutors by offering connec-
tions to university students look -
ing to volunteer time, said Victor
Becerra. executive director of the
university outreach program.
Becena said be is excited about
the effect the collaboration will
bring the community.

lished track record, and I th.inJc
Dixon was the second-highest
fund-raiser, bringing in a total of
$3,944. The mayor received most
of her contributions Crom indi-
viduals, but the most notable
contribution came in the fonn of
a $2,000 check from Angi!l's Auto
Spa.
C.ouncilwoman Ubby Cowan
contributed $100 'to both Foley
and Dixon, but failed to file her
own account status. Cowan
could not be reached for com-
ment at press time. In the 2000
election. Cowan raised more
than $16,000, proving the steep
price tag a bld for the council
can carry.
Planning C.Ommissioner Bill
Peiklna ranked third, bringing in
$3,256. While he did not out-
raiae his fellow planning com-
missioner, Perkins' report shows
the most support from the
business community. Docu-

this center will be very success-
ful right from the very start,"
Becerra said.
The mis'Sion of 'Think Together
is to assist educationally at-rislc
youth and provide them with
learning tools and a study venue
to be successful in an academic
environment Officials said the
students on Wtlson Street fit the
prototype perfectly, as a large
majority of the students come
from immigrant families and
have language barriers to over-
come before they can eveo taClcle
the content of their schoolwork.
Becerra said the center will
arm immigrant children with
the tools they need to tackle the
rigors of elementary education.
Any additional help with
schoolwork helps, he said.
Westside resident Janice Da-
vidson worries, however, that
the center will be too focused
on immigrant children and will
alienate students of other eth-
nicities who also need help. She
said the community should look
for facilities that encourage the
interaction of different races
and ethnicities, not venues that
cater to one ethnic background.
"The other center [seems to be)•
for Latinos only, iUld it's really not
quite fair," Davidson said. •They
have all of these extra homework
schools for the Latino lcids, but
nobody is looking out for the
(other) children in the city."

ing in the last leg of the race.

Gartner admitted the center
will most likely sene Latino chiJ.
dren, but that is just a fact of life,
he said. Sheer statistics of the eth-
nic breakdown of the neighbor-
hood and the elementary school
that will feed the center show
that, p~ .Latino students
will attend the center, be said.
"That is just how things are
because this is where we are,·
Gartner said. "But if the implica·
tion is that we will not open our
doors and assist Anglo students
-or anyone else for that matter
-that is completely false."
Davidson also questioned the
(>k'oliferatlon of learning centers
on the Westside, saying there
are various locations in the city
that could benefit from extra tu·
torial services.
"There are other kids in the
city who need the same type of
help, and I don't see anyone
helping them," Davidson said.
Gartner did not disagree with
her sentiment but said he was
doing his pan for his specific
neighborhood.
"We could use a center like this
in every C.Osta Mesa neighbor·
hood, and I applaud the schools
who have already f'acilltated
something like this,~ he said.

in opening play of the
U.S. Senior Nationals.
Steve Vlreen
Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -Day 1 in
the Senior Nation$ resulted in dis-
playing domination for the Newport
I !arbor Water Polo Foundation 'A:
team. Newport Coach Ted New-
land's players were men among
boys as they displayed their prowess
in two victories on the first day of
the Senior Nationals at Corona del
Mar I-Ugh. Newport scored a 17-4
victory over Paradise (UC Santa Bar-
bara) and an 18-5 victory over Lion
(Loyola Marymount).
"We're basically playing against a
college team; it's a little different
than playing against a team like
Hungary." said two-meter man
Ryan Bailey, a U.S. National Team
member who led Newport with 14
goals on the day, seven in each vic-
tory. "This was not quite as aggres-
sive as I'm used to. It will be differ-
ent (today)." ·
Newport Harbor WPP A started Its
day with a sound victory over Para-
dise, and from the outset, Bailey led
the team mainly made up of UC Ir-
vine alumni. Newland is a longtime
coach of UCI. Bailey, class of '99,
scored Newport's first three goals.
Newport built a 4-0 lead with just
three minutes spent. There are
seven-minute quarters in the Senior
Nationals, and Newport still man-
aged to put up football scores.
Bailey scored three more goals in
the second quarter. Fellow two-me-
ter man Jeff Powers, who will be a
senior at ua in the fall, conbibuted
four goals, while Omar Amr, Dan
Klatt and UO assistant water polo
coach Marc Hunt added two each.
Amr, Powers. Klatt. Balley and goalie

trating and intimidating Paradise
with his 6-foot-8, 210-pound frame.
He stopped nine shots to help lead
Newport to the win over Lion. Kerr
and Newport held Uon scoreless in
the third quarter, and Kerr also fed
Balley and Amr on successful
counter attacks.
in addition to Bailey's seven goals,
Mike Evans, a three-time Olympian
scored three, as did Powers. Amr
added two and Hunt, Klatt and Sky-
lar Putnam contributed one each.
In the third quarter, Newport
could have been known as the Har-
lem Globetrotters of the pooJ, out-
scoring Uon, 5-0, and it could have
been six if Powers had netted a pen-
alty shot. His teammates joked with
him about the missed shot.
"He locked himself up for the Hall
of Fame for the worst four-meter
shot of all time," joked Klatt. who is
one of the coaches of Foothill High
water polo, a prep powerhouse.
The teasing among the players is
but a reOection of their unity. The
Newport Harbor Wate.r Polo Foun-
dation of UO alumni is similar to a
fraternity. Kerr describes the team as
a family, while Balley said that trans-
lates on to the play in the. pool.
The team aspect was displayed in
Newport's supreme ball movement
throughout its game against Uon
poloists. With 45 seconds remaining
in the third, Bailey put the exclama-
tion point on that ball movement
with a dauling spin move and shot
to finish a breakaway. "How did he
do that." echoed throughout the
crowd.
"I want to show these guys the
level of play of U.S. water polo," Bai-
ley said. "I want to play sedously,
not holding back. Maybe the college
lcids can learn and know what it's
like to play against the Hungarians."
Newport will face Bruin (UCLA)
today at 1 p.m. Bruin also defeated
Uon, 11-t. Former Newport Harbor
High standout Peter Belden and Co-
rona del Mar product Garrett Bow-
lus scored one goal each.
Former CdM coach John Vargas,
who also coached the 2000 U.S.
Olymplc team. is in familiar waters

feated Big Valley (University of the

And, to thin.le. Barry is relatively a
rookie in the sport.
Barry, who will be a sophomore at uo ln the fall. scored ftYe goals and
displayed the raw talent that adtes
his coach, Tud Newland.
"He just keeps getting better,"
.Newland said of Bany, who is from
Eugene, Ore .. "He came out of no-
where, really. He's a great athlete and
he's getting stronger. A few years
from now, he's going to be big time.
He still has a lot Of learning to do."
After a slow start, Barry and fellow
UO teammate Garrett Gentry led
Newport to a 5-0 lead lo the first
half. Barry drew an ejection and
later finished with the goal on the
stx-on-ftve with 3:22 remaining in

Then. after Newport goalie Doug
Finfrock recorded a steal, he fed Phil
Garcia on the counterattack. Garcia
went to Gentry and Gentry dished to
Barry, who muscled hJs way in set
and fired for a 3-0 lead.
"I've improved a lot.~ Barry said of
his rise from last year to this sum-
mer. "I'm a lot stronger than I used

ting pushed around. But. I've been

SIDELINES
"Brother, can you
spare a quarter?
A recent mini-reunion
ofOass of'45 at
Harbor High sparked a
food memory of Rod
MacM.ilUan, who earned a deep
regard from thousands of young
boys when he was athletic
director of the Hatbor Boys'
Oub.
One of the most outstanding
heroics that Is still remembered
by some found MacMilllan, at
about the age of9, in 1935
saving the life of a young boy
about 6 years old in the bay near
Bay Island.
One '49 varsity grldder recalls
seeing MacMllllan and the boys
at Ice cream restaurants after
the games. He would transport
them to the games and treat
them to desserts.
MacMillia.n. who also served
prominently on the
Newpon-Mesa school board for
years, made his athletic madc5
in football and track as a junior
and senior at Newport.
He was once a sportswriter for
some years in the harbor ~
and also contributed many
hours helping Newport
athletic director Ralph
Reed with sports
programs and
publications.
As a teammate and a
sportswriter,
MacMillian always held
his sports mates in
highest regard.
As a sportswriter,
Before the young lad
tumbled into the
water, MacMillian was
aware that the boy
couldn't swim and
dove into the water
from the dock to pull
him up and bold his
head above water. He
also called for help. He
knew a lifeguard
named Al Irwin was
nearby on Montero
Street in Newport.
DON MacMillian bad a habit
of seeking out CANTRELL meaningful qualities
lrwin still remembers the
desperate moment and came
running to help. He was able to
lift the boy away from
MecMillian and move him Lo
safety out of the water.
MacMillian was simply pleased
that they could rescue the boy
and never carried any thoughts
of a thanks or reward.
However, it is presumed that
some witnesses were rather
astonished when the boy's
mother, a well-to-do woman,
came forward and offered
MacMlllian a quarter ru, a
reward
As the years came to pass,
MacMillian became a constanr
friend and counselor to many
boys who frequented the Harbor
Boys' Oub in Costa Mesa and
participated in numerous
sports.
Irwin, a lifeguard in prep days.
who advanced to become a
coach at Harbor High. Orange
Coast College and UC Irvine.
still has warm recalls of
MacMillian's heartwarming
contributions to harbor area
boys.
IIwin recently said, ·1 was
pleased when they held that
tribute to Rod wheo they did
some years ago. II was a fine
tribute."
Admirers still recall MacMillian's
days of driving the boys on
buses to places they ordinarily
would never visit for sports and
field trips since many came
from homes that could not
aJJord pleasure trips for their
families.
Many of those attending the
tribute years ago remembered
the emotional tu~ when it
came around to personally
thanking MacMillian for all his
years of encouragement and
generosities.

about individuals.
Out of the year of '49, he
recalled that Bob Berry was
almost picked as captain of the
'47 Tar varsity as a sophomore
-two more votes would have
done it.
Berry was named captain for the
second time at the end of the
'49 season. Berry was excused
one day each week to work -
and he did by hauling cement
from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then
reporting for football practice
and still working harder than
any other member of the team.
He often kept minute items of
interest on players. He once
wrote, "Mel Smalley. most
valuable Tar '49 gridder, saw
only two minutes of action
during the '48 season, yet his
desire to play made him
first-team this year in addition
to being Most Valuable Player
and All-Sunset League."
Smalley also scored 104 points
in '49.
He was often bothered when he
would observe an outstanding
player shorted or belittled by
league members or writers in
one direction or another.
He recalled Lorrie Langmade.
one of Newport's best gridders
in '43 under Coach Les Miller.
He wrote, "Langmade has
played a great season as
blocking back. .. and bad been
even greater at backing up the
line, but was left off the
all-league team."
He noted that justice arrived a
few weeks later when Langmade
was named LO the All-CIF
second team. Langmade had
also bee11 a stout member of the
champ '42 Newport grid team.
One interesting note once found
that l.angmade scored the
6rst-ever T-formation
touchdown for Newport vs.
Huntington Beach in '43.
