A 44-foot powerboat manages to find beach parking on the Balboa Peninsula near 12th Street after washing ashore Thursday evening. A crane

Stranded 44-foot powerboat provides Balboa Peninsula onlookers some

A riveting drama unfolded on
the Balboa Peninsula on Pri·
day afternoon as workers
painstakingly Died to remove a boat
that ran aground the night before.
Ousters of bvstanders watched as
a 130-foot crane attempted to haul
the powerboat. named Decadence,
off the beach and onto a big rig.
David Padilla. 40, the captain and
owner of the boat, was arrested
Thursday night by the harbor patrol
on suspicion of operating the boat
while being intoxicated. The Haci-
enda Heights resident's blood aJco-
hol level was about 0.16 -twice
the legal limit, said Harbor Patrol
Sgt Ron Peoples. Newport Beach
police officers arrested one of Padil-
la's passengers after he left the boat
on suspicion of being· drunk in
public.
The removal tested the mettle of
the aane operators and ttucking
crew as they tried to get the boat off
the beach while inOicting as little
damage as possible. By 6:30 p.m.,
they had succeeded.
The #-foot powerboat ran aground
between 12th and 15th Sb-eets Thurs-
day night. causing a oommotion
among residents in the area.
·we were having dinner and
looked out and saw the crowd, ..
said Richard Ward, who watched
Friday's efforts from his summer
rental home. ·The boat had over-
turned and all we could see was its
black bonom."
Soon afterward, a tow truck
dragged the boat onto the beach
to prevent it from being battered
by the overnight surf.
·we didn't take it out to sea be-
cause it was too dangerous,· said
Heather Warmington, towing op-
eradons manager for Vessel Assist,

ders would have broke."
On Friday afternoon, the crane
and truck crews started the hours·
long process or hauling Decadence
off the beach, which proved a frus.
trating endeavor, mainly because
of the boat's large size. Other chal-
lenges Included the physical lirni·
tations or having homes so close
to the beach and dealing with low
power lines on 12th Street.
On their fust try, one or the
crane pulleys broke because the
boat's position on the sand caused
it to resist the forward motion,
said Jesse Bolton or Heavy Trans-
port.
Using the crane's other pulley,
workers were able to slowly slide
the boat about 250 yards toward
12th Street. Since the forward por-
tion of the boat was facing 12th
Street, the crews had to re-rig the
crane and rotate the boat lifting it
onto the truck.
But five hours after the crane ar-
rived, Decadence remained
stranded, prolonging the soap op-
era for onlookers.
•it's exciting," said Mel Mann, a
full -time Balboa PeninsuJa resi-
dent. "The last time this kind or
thing happened was when a Ub-
erty boat came ashore 10 to IS
years ago."
Removing costs could run up to
$30,000, Warmington said.

a time of renovadon. The congregadon now
worships in a gymnasium because the worship

with a better sound system and video

The metal trashcans were a

"We've been working very
closely with the city of Newport

everything we can to avoid con-

resentative for the water district.
But it's possible that working
together may not be enough.
The city has applied for $2.5
million to help pay for a $5-mil-

longtime goal, the priority of
which got a big boost by the
Sept 11 terrorist attacks.. The
cover, basically a huge plastic Ud

layer of security again5t attaclc or

such as an infestation of midge

prevented by a cover.

Among the assorted news was
an alert that the city was giving

beautify an otherwise good-
looking town, the city, for a lim-

The program seems to be
pretty popular. We've put in our

til mid-September because of
high demand. The city's Joe Bo-

dispelling any myths about gov-

Greenlight preserves
city's quality of life
CHOC clinic loses another round
By Adele •nd Mel M•nn
The Daily Pilot editorial
titled "Dunes sale a sad
ending" (June 28) revealed
the Pilot's implied attack
against the Greenligbt law. It's
as if Greenlight killed the
Dunes hotel ~roject. There
was no Greenllgbt election on
the Dunes hotel. But it was
obvious that the many
citizens throughout Newport
Beach appeared to be
adamantly opposed to the
proposed Dunes hotel,
especially those residents in
the vicinity of the hotel.
Fortuna•ely, the project died.
The Greenllght law pennits
Newport Beach residents to
vote, "yes" or "no." on
large-scale developments that
could create even more •
burdensome traffic.
The rejected Koll project,
for example, was the first
instance where residents
could vote on a large-scale
development
Almost 65% of the
electorate opted to maintain
our quality of life rather than
allow construction of this
traffic-generating high-rise
office building.
Without resident advocate
groups such as Greenlight,
the residents in Orange
County could ultimately
expect to be victims of
unbearable traffic levels such
as those now present and
growing in Los Angeles
County.
The Metropolitan 'Jhmsit
Authority in Los Angeles
predicts that by 2025,
rush-hour traffic highway
speeds in Los Angeles County
will drop by 50%. Let's not
allow this traffic nightmare to
happen in Orange County.
As residents, we should
continue to support Green-
light's objectives. Four seats
on the Newport Beach City
Council are up for election in
November 2002. Soon, we
will hear from the candidates.
We should support those
candidates who believe in
Greenlight's objectives.

At first glance, it appears the
Olildren's Hospital of Orange
CoWlty and Newport-Mesa
school distric;t-sponsored health
clinic on the Rea campus is a
good way to provide free care to
the students (A Ooser Look,
"Rea plan becomes center of
debate," Monday).
A closer look reveals that this
is not the case.
The clinic will be serving all
young people from zero to 17
(21 for chronically ill) that need
not be students of Rea or any
other district school. The people
served need not even be
residents of the school district,
or even citiZens or legal resi-
dents of this country. With all
the talk about upgrading the
quality of life on the Westside,
this clinic will work against that
by attracting people from across
the county looking for a hand-
out, and not living in or contrib-
uting to Westside's community.
CHOC and the district have
attempted to ramrod this project
through with no input from the

Westside oommunlty. In their
zeal to get a share of Proposition
10 money, they have run rough-
shod over the interests of the
residents of the Westside. This is
another case of the liberal estab-
lishment purporting to know
what is best for the rest of us.
81.L JOHNSON

Never let it be said that we
Westside Costa Mesans aren't a
generous Jot We take care of
more of our city's poor and
downtrodden than virtually any
other city our size. Charities
abound here on the Westside.
However, enough is eoough.
When we begin to endanger
our own schoolchildren to ben-
efit all those from surrounding
cities, we cry, "foul." If CHOC
must locate another free clinic in
Costa Mesa, at Least let it be
placed in an underserved area
Eastside or north side might be
fine; ask the folks in those areas.
Those of us on the Westside
have already done our duty.
CHRISllAN ERIC

I am writing in opposition to
the idea of locating the CHOC
medical clinic on the grounds of
the Rea school on Hamilton
Street Why place a medical
clinic in the middle of a residen·
dal neighborhood on an el-
ementary school ground?
We need to be protecting our
children from strangers entering
the school area, not adding un-
known persons visiting school
grounds and adding traffic to an
already busy street. 'liying to
make a left turn onto Harbor
Boulevard from Hamilton in the
afternoon is already impo~ble.
JAN PETERSON
Costa Mesa
While the writer's difficulty
following the final outcome of
the school board's deliberations
on the proposed CHOC/district
free clinic at Rea school is
understandable, her conclusion
is incorrect ("'lhlstees waver on
Rea health center,n July 18).
Rather than proposing to
postpone the clinic issue Mfor the
discussion by the full board," as
the Pilot repprted, trustee Mar-
tha Fluor can be seen and heard
on the video stating, and I para-
phrase., that the board needs two
members, that this is going to
die right here if the board
doesn't get two members to
bring this forward to the August
age~da.
Fluor repeated her plea sev-
eral times and received no re-
sponse, at which point she
changed her plea to: "I rieed one
member to bring this forward, I
need one member." Board
member Jim Ferryman then re-
plied: "I can go with you on
that."
After falling to convince two of
her peers on the board to agree
to bring the Rea clinic issue up
for later discussion, Fluor, a
board member who had appro-
priately excused herself from
voting on the issue, then made a
motion to keep it alive.
If Fluor's voting on an issue is
inappropriate, wouldn't a mo-
tion regarding the issue also be
inappropriate?
This action is especially trou-
bling because Ruor admJts the
issue was dead at that point, and
apparently no two members
were willing to resurrect it.
Fluor was also vociferous in
her lobbying for the clinic, and
this observer wonders if lobby.
ing also constitutes a conflict of
interest. Given the actions taken
by Fluor, this observer believes
that the issue should be allowed
to die for Jack of suppon.
The proposed clinic at Rea is
simply the wrong idea in the
wrong place. I doubt many Pilot
readers would want a Cree clinic
in their neighborhoo$.

If the CEOs or Enron,
WorldCom, Adelphia and the
o ther companies that have
found themselves in trouble
lately had followed the MICiwanls
Objectives," they wouldn't be
facing stiff jail terms, notes
Olarles Markel, past president of
the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Oub
and a Realtor with Pacific Coast
Realty Group.
The six permanent objectives
were approved by J(jwanis club
delegates at the 1924
Convention in Denver. They
have remained unchanged since.
They are: ·
• to give primacy to the
human and spiritual rather than
to the material values of life;
• to encowage the daily living
of the golden rule in all human
relationships;
• to promote the adoption and
the application of higher social.
business and professional
standards;
• to develop, by precept and
example. a more intelligent,

to render altruistic service and
to build better communities;
• to cooperate in creating and
maintaining that sound public
opinion and high idealism that
make possible the increase of
righteousness, justice, patriotism
and goodwill.
Wow! I wonde r if the
candidates for governor of
California or even our local city
council candidates could live by
the objectives of Kiwanis in their
campaigns in office? One would
hope so.

Robert Schumitzky plays hockey in a semi-i)ro league and is a violinist in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra.
Pla.ying
for the score
Violinist Robert Schumitzky has two passions: playing first violin
with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and playing semi-pro hockey.
Youn1Chan1
Darty Pitot
A single pair of hands dictate
Robert Scburnitzky's
polar-opposite passions.
When be~ onstage in his
tuxedo with his violin, be is
delicate with his bow and makes music
that requires more emodon than
888JeSSiOO.
When he's on the ice, the same set of
bands command a hockey sdck with the
alngle and often violent goal or
slamming the puck into the net.
Eliz.abeth Schwnitzky. his wtfe.

'Ole ftnt concert lhe went to was at

Orchestra.
·1 was amazed. I bad teen in my eyes.
I wu so lllOYed, • his Wile said.
Then came the 6nt boc::key game. He
got on the ice, got ln a ftgbt with two
guys much bigger than him and
rumbled even after the sba Sew oft.
"When he's paying the violin, he's the
most sensitive, emotional guy,· she said.
"When he played hockey, that all went
out the window. He's jus1 an animal"
But the 42-year-old first violinist for
Pacific Symphony and semi-pro hockey
player for an elite league team at
OlsneylCE doesn't think there's such a
contrast between the world of a thletics
and that of music.
He started playing the violin when he
was 7 ln St. Louis, Mo. At about the same
age, he started playing hockey in achool,
learning to Ice skate. Hockey over there
ls the equivalent to soccer over here.
When be was 11, I.be Newport Coast
resident was accepted into the St. Louis
Conaervatory oC Music, where be later
graduated. He continued bis musical
schooling at Juilllard School of Music
and johled the Pldflc Symphony in

•Most people !hat don·t know me !lay,

said Schumitzky, also lhe aMOclate

forbid if something were to happen to
me that would stop me from ever
playing the violin again. I'd be
devastated. but that's not a deterrent for
me. It's in my blood.•
If be were for some reason forced to
give up ooe of his loves. Schumltzlcy
hesitantly says be would have to leave
bocley. But he doesn't even like
fathoming such a situation and
rationalizes his decWion with comments
about how be' too old now to seriously
compete in the professional hockey
world. That goal was actually Ooe"Yer a
serious one. as Schumitzky regularly
split bis childhood between violin
practice arid dme on the ice. But the
sport that began as just a fun patime
bu continued to serve him in deeper
ways.

the mini-works. "The beauty of
the theater is that we can
actually act and push the
envelopes of our physical
characteristics ... to use all of
your instruments -your voice,

language -but beyond that,
your imagination."
Imagination will play the
biggest role though in the
readings, which began Friday
and will continue today. The
audience will have to imagine
play elemen ts such as costumes
and sets while actors present a
rather bare production.
"lt's an opponunlty to hear
the play, and that's our
obligation there as actors -to
be as true as possible to the
language and to the intention of
every theme," Sanchez said.

of the Father" will be read today,
said he doesn't feel nervous
about the experience, but rather
vulnerable. A previous work by

COSTA MESA -Al stake waa the gl.rls
168 singles championship in the c.o.ta
Mesa Junior Tennis Oassic, but Newport
Beach's Vanessa Dunlap appn>Kbed the
title match Friday as a midsummer day
with a good friend at the Costa Mesa Thn-
nis Center.
Dunlap, a Newport Harbor Hjgh junior
next month, defeated her doubles part-
ner. Newport Beach's Diana Khoury, in
the singles final, 6-4, 6-2, then teamed
with Khoury to win the doubles title with
a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Bonnie Adams
(Newport Harbor) and Jamie Steele (Co-
rona del Mar). It was the first time Dun-
lap and Khoury played doubles together.
Newport Beach's Jake F1eming, the top
seed in the boys 14s singles. rallied to de-
feat Irvine's Silvio Cluba. 6-7 (4), 6-3. 6-2.
in Prlday's championship match, winning
the only other singles title among New-
port-Mesa players.
"I was kind of laclcadaJsical In the first
set, but then In the second set I started to
be more aggressive," said F1eming. who
jump-started the day's action with an 8
a.m. first serve.
'Three -otheT area products reached the
finals in their respective singles divisions.
but came up short of the crown.
In the boys l 2s, Costa Mesa's Olarlie Al-
varado, the top seed, lost to nemesis Ray-
mond Sarmiento of Los Angeles, 6-2. 6-3.
Sarmiento also defeated Alvarado in the
semifinals of the War by the Shore Junior
Tennis Oassic last week at the Balboa Bay
Qub Racquet Qub.
In the girls 12s, top-seeded McCall
Jones of Trabuco Canyon knocked off
Costa Mesa's Nelly Radeva, 6-2, 6-0, while
lop-seeded Tom McCullough of Pasadena
beat Newport Beachs Robert Khoury. 6-3,
6-1.
R.adeva, a Kaiser sixth grader next
month, reached a singles final for the
fourth lime in her career at the Costa
Mesa tournament. She won the I Os as a
9-year-old and also lost in the I 2s title
match last year.
"I played well, but I should've been
more consistent," Radeva said of Friday's
8 a.m. final against Jones. "Sh e didn't miss
a lot and I made most of the errors."
In the boys 18s final, 14-year-old Rob-
ert Khoury was on the wrong end of a
huge momentwn swing in the first set
against McCullough. With Khoury serving
at 3-4 and 30-40, he called a baseline re-
turn by McCullough out. But an umpire
overruled it and awarded the game to
McCullough. whose inspired play there-
after carried him to the win.
"It was really tight in the first set,"
Khoury said. "But I was just destroyed af-
ter that call. I was so upset. The ball was
dearly out by two feet. I should've just
played tennis, but I was too distracted
with the calls."
Khoury, playing up in the I 8s for only
the second time, is a 5-foot-10, 150-
pound right-hander with a big serve that
has been clocked at 11 5 mph in practice.
1 le's coached by his father, Buddy. a for-
mer touring pro.
Khoury, who onJy started playing ten-
nis three years ago, will be a freshman at
Newport Harbor in the fall and could be
first-year boys tennis coach Jeff Thom-
sen's star for four years.
"I want to try to beat some of the top
lcids," Khoury said of playing up two age
groups. "I don't want to stay back. I want
to improve and get better every day."
Newport Beach's Jill Braverman was in-
volved in the victorious girls I 4s doubles
team.
Dunlap, coached by former touring pro
Debbie Graham, said her focus Friday
was to have fun in her 165 singles final
match against high school teammate Di-
ana Khoury, because they're such good
friends.
"My game was pretty consistent and
that helped me the most," Dunlap said
