Gay march set for C.osta
Mesa City Hall return
Leaden of the county lesbian
organization marched out of City Hall
last week with overwhelming support
from the city Human Relations
Gommittee for their annual
demonstration. .
OrganizeJS from the Orange County
Dyke March received the endorsement
of seven of nine committee members,
as the committee voted to offtcially
recommend that the City Coundl on
Monday not only approve the sugested
march route but waive the polloe
protection fees auociated with the
march.
Lori Hutson and C..tie Profeta, who
have organiud the Orange County
version of lhe national Dyke March.
said the special event fees charged by
the city, which exceeded $4,000, were
excessive and deterred freedom of
assembly from groups who could not
afford such a large amount
Committee members agreed and not
only recommmded the coundl waive or
cap fees foe the Dyke March but sa~
the city take a closer look at the pennit fees
and comider lowering them.

ENVIRONMENT
IArty beaches soil
lJlewport city leaders
-ity leaders hardly wanned at the
lllDval of a report in which Newport
Beach stood out as an area with some
of Orange County's dirtiest beaches.
Beach postings and closures spiked
80.7% during 2001, when compared to
the prior year, according to a report
released by the Natural Resources
Defense Council.
The group, reporting data collected
from the Orange County Health Care
Agency, said the county's beaches were
marred by either of those two stigmas
for 1,592 days of the year. ln 2000, the
county counted only 881 days.
Many of those postings or closures
occurred in Newport Beach, a
reveJation that didn't excite city leaders.
"Were embarrassed," Mayor Tod
Ridgeway said. MWe're not happy about
it"
Several trouble spots emerged -
43rd Street, 38th Street and the
swimming lagoon at the Newport
Dunes Waterfront Resort.
Despite the dour news, city leaders
said they were implementing measures
to deal with the postings. which are
caused when bacteria from polluted
wban runoff or other waste causes
bacteria levels to soar in swtmmlng
areas. '
City leaders have mounted three
studies to examine the source of the
pollution.

Time for tough

I t 11 dllftcult to tmqlne how
anyone could oppote a plan
to get doctors, nWMt and
bulc healthcare where they
are needed. But that la Juat
what la happentna on the WeataJde

A plan ta ln the worb that calla
for a 4,800-aquare-foot health
center at Rea Elementary. By itl
third year, the center - a joint
venture by the Newport·Meaa
Unified School Dlatrlct and the
Oilldren'a Hospital of Orange
County-Is expected to handle
9,000 doctor's visit.a annually, and
CHOC would lease the building
from the district for $12 a year. The
laudable mission, supporters at the
district and the hospital aay, la to
serve West.side children, regardless
of their race, financial situation or
legal status. thereby keeping them
healthy and best able to learn.
They hope to have It open by
June 2003.

SKATE DEBATE
'We should have at
least two skateboard
parks in Costa Mesa
right now. There 's
places to put them that
would have minimal
impact on people. If
we're going to be in
the business of
providing recreation,
skateboarding is
certainly one of them.
You have a certain

that are

SEAN HILLER/DAILY PILOT

the city's tentative plans to restrict recreational vehicle parking
W hen the C.Osta Mesa
Planning
Commission and
City Council began
reworlcing an
ordinance restricting recreational
vehicle parking late last year,
resident Bill Folsom, who uses his
RV as his only mode of
transportation, became involved
to help the city craft the law.
Though that compromise has
been reached, Folsom continues
to attemttity meetings to assist
the process on other Issues,
including a proposal that would
allow the city to dictate how
homeowners use their backyards.
On Friday, City &litor James
Meler visited the city mechanic in
his RV as he ate lunch from
nearby El Campion.

Yeah. it was after the first meeting,
but I bad been acdve in this city,
politically and on those issues -even
the RV is.rue years ago when it surfaced
a couple of times before and had
people writing. calllng and showing up
at the meetings. But this was the first
time the RV ordinance actually made It
onto the agenda. so obviously we had
to be more public about It and organiz.e
people to 1peak at Oty Council
mee~
What got me motivated this time was
we didn't expect-we knew they were
considering an ordinance-they would
clisam it until the awn.mer. When It
came up, suddenly, in the mJddle of
December -when everyone was on
Ouistmas vacation -a lot of people
were mad becal.18e the timing teemed to
be when it would get leas opposition. It
may bavie been pure cotnddeoce, but
that's what a lot of people thought. And
bow restrictive it was really took a lot of

them that are, quote, the problem, that ·
spoke at City Hall meetings. but by and
large. of the original 300 peeple,
probabty 2% to 3% were problem
people. That's my opinion.
It depends who 'you talk to. Some
people who park in the street for an hour
to load their sleeping bags are considered
problem people by some people. I don't
consider them problem people.
I consider the problem people who
are those who leave them for wee.Jes to
months at a time and don't use them.
They're sort of stored there.
What do you think of the ftna1
raultt
It's still going to affect some people
negatively, but 1 think the City Council
really went a long way to come to a
fairly decent compromise. I think it's
going to wortc for most people. And it
should. without a doubt. resolve the
problems that they wanted to address.
Oki you tab any beat, being that

Well, we weren't speaking against City
Hall. We obviously didn't have any voice
when It came to writing the ordinance
in the first place. We were just
advocating for the RV people. We
weren't against City Hall We just
wanted to make our views Jcnown.
I really haven't taken any heat on
that I'm a resident of Costa Mesa and
people haven't really made that an
issue. There are some people who have
cornered me. saying why would want
that blight on our street, but it's all been

And I work with (LLJ KarJ (Schuler), the
guy who wrote the on:linance-and we

his job to do and I understand that We11
be the brunt of each other's jokes for
years to come. I'm sure. It was also Karts
first exposure in writing an ordinance
and dealing with Oty Council. I think he
did a real professiooal job.
Now, ,ou"Ye aleo been lnvotwd for

recreation, skateboarding is certainly
one of them. You have a certain
amount of baseball players, football
players and soccer players. Most of
those kids are skateboarders, plus five
limes more than that are
skateboarders. So you have this huge
popuJation that's been not just
ignored, but have seen laws passed
where you can't skateboard in a lot of
places. And you have no facilities
provided for you.
Like Jim Gray says. about 30% of the.
world's skateboards are made here in
Costa Mesa and we're one of the last
cities to have a skate park. It's crazy
the city hasn't embraced that culture.
The hotrod culture's the same way. We
have some upcoming events based on
the hotrod culture -rod runs, Run for
the Cure for prostate cancer. There are
huge events that we shouJd be
celebrating here because this is one of
the localities where that hotrod cuJture
starts. And It's always been.a hotbed of
that cuJture, just like surfing.
skateboarding. For some reason. we've
missed all the opportunities to
embrace that and really use that to our
advantage. It's a worldwide thing and
we're the hub or that here, bµt there's
no mention of Costa Mesa There's no
promotion of those things.
Another thing I can throw in there is
the Speedway we have every Saturday
night. We've crowned several world
champions here In Costa Mesa, but
what do they get? They get hassled and
made to feel like they're not we~omed
here. It's something that brings in
people and couJd bring ln a lot more.
Afterward, they'll frequent places ln
the city. Or before, for dinner or
whatever. It sh ould an event that we're
proud of.
We lost the Pacific Amphitheatre for
the same reason that the RV and hottod
issues came up. It was 11 very small
number of people complaining about a
small number of Incidents. but then
they make ordinances that affect
everybody. We had a wortd-class venue
there at the Pacific Amphitheatre.
Hopefully, it11 be comlns back soon.
but we Jet that get away from us. I
thought it was great asset to Costa
Mesa ·
In dealing with an of these different
issues. we're hoping to fonn a coalition
to address Costa Mesa as a center for
these things. One or the phrases that
keeps coming up la "Nc>;FUft Meea. ~

we're missing the Fish Fry. A lot of
people would like to see that return.
Lions Oub wouJdn't be able to pull
that off because of membership issues.
But maybe a coalition or groups could
do that and locate it at Fairview Parlt.
l'he OCC swap meet and Fish Fry were
very much part of the community
spirit around here
There are a lot of other issues I'm
involved in. obviously involved in the
political campaign for City Council this
year. I'm going through lhe city trying to
find what people's issues are. The whole
Westside business community feels its
being lcicked around. Because it's the
Westside and we should have
million-dollar houses over there, and
that may be, but they're being made to
feeJ like they're outsiders even though
they've been our lifeblood They built
their businesses and worted their hearts
out over there and now they're being
made to feel they're not welcome. And
that's a real shame. There's an easy cure
to the problem; it doesn't have to be as
complicated as everybody's malcing it
The same with the Hlspank culture.
We have not embraced their
contributions like we should. I mean,
we live in a place called Costa Mesa.
We've just focused on the negative
aspects and not the po itive aspects, of
which there ace many. One of them is
right here, (my lunch isl Crom a little
grocery store down the treet. It's
where we eat every day-El Campion.
Another one is Wahoo's. That's a great
example of the entrepreneurial spirit
of the people of Costa Mesa. We
should take ownership or that stuff.
Our columnist Byron de Arabi

freedom is really being sold cheaply

they're willing to seD that freedom. I
think It' dangerous down the road.

DON l£ACH I DALY PILOT
Goalie Genai Kerr and his Newport 'A' Water Polo Foundation teammates have a formidable challenge today at CdM.
CATCHING UP WITH
Newland vs. Vargas at 10:30 a.m., then the finals
at 3:15 p .m. as Senior Nationals wrap up today.
Steve V1r1en
Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -Easy does it.
That's what was supposed to be the
scenario for the Newport Harbor Wa·
ter Polo Foundation 'X team, which
grabbed two victories to advance to
the semifinals of the Senior Nationals
at Corona del Mar High Saturday.
However, Newport A proved to be
hardly conservative. Ted Newland's
band of talented water polo players
scored seemingly simple victories
over Golden Bear ·~ CUC Berkeley),
11-4, and then a 12-4 win over Ma·
libu Waves (Pepperdine).
Newport will face Stanford in the
semifinal today at 10:30 a.m. at
CdM, whim means the pupil. for-
mer CdM High and current Stanford
Coach John Vargas. will face the
teacher, Coach Newland.
Vargas, hardly a student. coached
the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team and suc-
cess has followed him wherever he
roams. His Stanford squad gave Sen·
lor Nationals defending champion
New Yock A1hletic Oub 'X all that it
could handle Friday, and Stanford
collected two wins Saturday.
Coaching at Vargas' side will be
assistant Brian Kreutzltamp, the for-
mer Newport Harbor High coach.
"We are friends," Newland said of
the matchup against Vargas. "He lived
at my house and he put in his time
for the Foundation. We'll bang our
heads out there and we'll see what
happens in the end. They'll probably
tty to counter the hell out of us."
New York AC A will face Malibu in
the other semifinal. New Yock AC A
carries five U.S. National Team
Members, while Newport boasts five,
including Jeff Powers, who will be a
senior at UC Irvine in the fall Stan-
ford will feature three U.S. NatiQoal
Team members today in Peter Hud·
nut. Tony Azevedo and Jeff Nesmith.
Powers and U.S. National team·
mate Ryan Bailey ruled the waters
against Golden Bear 'I\. Powers
scored five goals, while fellow two-
meter man Bailey contributed four
goals. Robert Lynn and UCI assist·
ant men's water polo coach Marc
Hunt added one goal each. Goalie
Genai Kerr recorded seven saves, as
Newport played without Newland,
who watched over his Newport B
SQUjld made up of current UCI play-
ers. Newport B lost twice.
Newland arrived moments after
the opening sprint in Newport's A
game against Malibu. Malibu shut
out Newport A in the first quarter.
1-0, but Newport roared back. out-
scoring Pepperdloe, 9-0. over the
next two quarters. Newport posted
three goals in the second and then
went on a 6-0 run in the third, sa>r·
ing on counterattacks and ~
Bailey to keep Malibu off balance.
Bailey led with a six-goal per·
formance. Powers added two goab,
while U.S. National Team member
Dan :Klatt contributed one goal, as
did Hunt and Mike l?vans, the
three-time Olympian.
"I just told <Newport) to slow
down and be padent," Newland said
of his squad's breakout from a zero.

they have to do. It's not a secret and
there's no reason to panic." -Today's schedule
