I (you think teena tum olf atdcal-think- lng skills and steer clear of the pleasures Youn& Ch•n1 Daily Pilot E ven flamenco choreographer Yaelisa, who goes by jus1 the one name, is surprised that the Spanish art has found flourishing ground ln the unlikely land of Irvine. The Irvine Barclay Theatre will play host for the New World Flamenco Festival for the second year, starting today. The host city is becoming known for offering one of the three largest flamenco festivals in the country. Irvine joins New York City and Albuquerque simply because Douglas Ranlcin, president of the Barclay, wanted to play a part in making flamenco more mainstream in America The pivotal conversation happened five years ago in a small and windowless room in Sacramento. Yaelisa and Rankin got to talking about "thlngs in general" during a break from serving on the same dance panel. The choreographer brought up wanting to put on a flamenco festival in San Francisco, where her Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos company is based. 1Wo minutes later, the theater president said, "We ought to do that in Irvine.· And so Yaellsa's brainchild landed in Ranlcin's hall. "Of cowse, it took a few years to get it together, but some things are just as simple as that," Rankin said. The second annual JO-day result is anything but simple. As three companies travel from San Francisco, Madrid and Sevilla to perform a program of dance and music, the festival also offers workshops for visitors who can't readily fly to Spain to study with the best. A • long-distance relationship, of sorts, between performers and visitors is what Yaelisa wants. . "It's so amazing that a festival wt>uld exist in Irvine and that people w0uld come from all over catifornia." she said. "That's what ollr goal was, to try to make this a national festival. And I think that will happen." Rankin, who is no newcomer to the an of flamenco nor the art of presenting it, said he knew there was a market for It "I love the art form myself; therefore. I could legitimately and pass.ionately promote It if I had to." the president said. A number of phone calls and e-mails to City Hall fol- lowed, many of them from residents who want to be able to build large homes or duplexes on their property. "All of the callers on the manslonizaUon Issue were individuals who have pur- chased residentiaJ property as an investment, expecting to be able to develop large homes and duplexes similar to those we are seeing to- day," Assistant City Man- ager Sharon Wood reported to the City Council in a memo. "Many of these peo- ple are not large developers. but individuals for whom this property investment is the.ir nest egg." But at other points during the general plan update process, a very different view has prevailed: that of resi- dents who consider man- sionization -the trend toward building large resi- dential structures on rela- tively small lots -a serious problem. I am in support of bringing the experts in children's medical services, the Oilldren's Hospital of Orange County, here to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to help our children in need (A Ooser Look, MRea plan becomes center of debate," July 29). I am speaking for myself only, but in my work as a chairman of the boan:I or Save Our Youth, which serves an average of I 00 Costa Mesa teenagers at night. I see the need for medical services for our children who often do not receive it Many do not have medical insurance, and others have parents that work late or far away or can't afford to take off work to ta.lee them to the clinic. What a wonderful opportunity to have such a professional organization so close to our children that need it the most I dor't understand the contr6versy when we have the opportu- nity to improve the quality of life for our children. CESAR CABBEWNI Newport Beach I feel that this is an impor- tant help for all the children. They will not be turned away if they are not Latino. I think we need all the medical help we can get for the kids. . JOHN HENSLEY Costa Mesa I am strongly in favor of opening the CHOC clinic at the Rea Elementary School. Many low-income children in our city desperately need health care. With the CHOC clinic, we have the opportu- nity to meet that need. None of the arguments raised by opponents of the clinic de- feats the simple logic of giv- ing poor children access to ·doctors. In America, we talk so much about valuing chil- dren. here's our chance to show we mean what we say. The school board needs to be courageous and stick to its guns on this issue. KATHY ESFAHANI Costa Mesa AUGUST Good grief, what is Costa Mesa coming to when we so bitterly oppose a clinic for children? HOW TO CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES It was ironic that Jim De Boom's column on Saturday (Community & Oubs, "Ki- wanis International offers individuals objectives to steer by") was about Kiwanis objectives and it was placed opposite the page of the four angry letters to the edi- tor in the Daily Pilot If we tried to live by the Kiwanis' objectives, and I'm not a Ki- wanis myself, I think we would all ta.lee a djfferent look at subjects like the CHOC clinic.
