A parting

A nyone who's been Oung the
chance to scratch out a
newspaper column of any
frequency knows that writing the first
one ls like chewing ground glass. And
that crafting the last one is like
swallowing It Beginnings ancJ endings
are lilte that, I guess. But even that

crafting of this final

any easier.
'This column was

tortured path
marked by two
failed attempts to
BYRON DE convince a panel of
Dally Pilot editors ARAKAL that I was the
perfect piclc for
stirring up a UrtJe dust In our fine twin
cities.
Near as my squeaky memory can
recall, the first came sometime In 1991
when I tossed an entry Into the Pilot's
first-ever contest to piclc a columnist.
Fred Martin -once a publicist with
Capitol Records and the lucky mutt
charged with squiring the Beatles
around the UnJted States back In 1963
-got the nod on that one.
My second shot came some
quantity of years later when Martin
relinquished his coveted Page 3 slot In
exchange for tttirement in the thin air
of Colorado. I can't say I've ever
understood why he did that I mean.
Fred was getting on In years and a
brain with that many miles on It needs
more oxygen. not less. But no matter.
Now In the wake of the Fred
Column shuttering, the Pilot's editorial
pooh-bahs held a second beauty

better but still wound up chasing the
car. My column coUeague Steve SmJth
took home the trophy there.
1\vice vanquJshed, I wanted to
figure thJs newspaper's editors were a
bunch of loons and that the paper was
good for hauling about a
steak-and-kidney pie and a handful of
weU-salted chJps but not much else.
Except that a longtime friend, Bill
LobdeU, was the editor In command of
the shJp. and I couldn't very weU go
about trashing him. That, and the fact
that I've long held the Dally Pilot as
the best communJty newspaper in
Orange County.
But then the boys from the Wrndy
City (a.k.a. the Tribune Co.) swept into
town. bought up the Los Angeles

brilliant writer/edJtor Steve Maible off
to the SUnflower Avenue newsroom.
Maible was probabty the best writer
this paper's seen since Tum MurphJne

newsroom. His regular Wednesday
column was proof of that. In my book.
Thanks to a lobbying bUtz by
Lobdell -who with Publisher Tum

The 30-year-old Newport Beach

This spring, Miller visited Newport

with students in a surfing class. He said
he wanted them to know it was possible
to let your career evolve from your
passion.
And he still finds time to surf every
day, sometimes two to three times if the
waves are good.
In addition to sp ending time with the
next generation of surfers in high

Commissioners reject home-additi on plan
Planners say second-story request from a
Mesa Verde homeowner is ill-suited to the
neighborhood, marking the second such
denial in as man~weeks in Costa Mesa.
Lolita Harper
Daily Pilot
COSTA MP.5A . -Planning
commissioners deoled plans for
a Mesa Verde second-stoty addi-
tion Monday, using a conten-
tious part of the city's building
code that calls for harmony and
compatibility as its ~ foe the
decision.
Commissioners unanimously
agreed to reject plans to convert
a home in the 3000 block of Su-
matta Place from a one-story.
three-bedroom home to a ftve-~m. two-story house, say-
ing the proposed design was too
large to be considered compat-
ible with the sunounding
homes.
Commission CllaiJWOman Ka·
trina Foley's reasons for rejecting
the planned changes were sim·
pie, she said.
"I don't think it is right for that
part of the neighborhood be·
cause of the size and mass of it,"
Foley said.
Owners Kelly and April Vida
say they wanted to expand their
existing home to make room for
a larger family. The plans in-
cluded combining the existing
master bedroom tpld a sunroom
into one large game room and
leaving two bed.rooms on the
ground tloor. On the proposed
second story, three more bed-
rooms would be built
"We are a growing family, and
we are not trying to overbuild,"
Kelly Vida said. "We just need
some living space."
Commissioner Walt Daven-
port. while calling the plans ex·
cessive, also said he was con·
cemed that the commission was
again relying on a subjective part
of a city code that mandates that
develoP.ments be "compatible"
and hannonlous" with the
neighborhood.
Davenport said the city needs
a solid definition of those terms
but, because precise interpreta-
tions are nonexistent, he voted
with his colleagues.
This is the second second-
story addition to be rejected by
city officials in two weeks. The
previous project called for an ad-
dition to a home on Aviemore
Terrace, with City Council mem-
bers ultimately denying the
plans because the designs were
not "compatible."
At that meeting, Councilman
Gary Monahan invtted the own·
en of that Westllde home to me,
aaylng it was rune to see lf that
portion of the clty code stood up
to a legal challenge.
In both cases. sunounding
neighbors who voiced concerna
ebout privacy and views pr·
nered city leaders' favor.
About a dozen Mesa Verde
residents were at the commifl..
sion meeting Monday to oppose
the Vidas' addition, calling It a
"monster bouseH that would
stick out in the modest neigh·
borhood. Some went as far as to
compare the proposed project to
the ·"mansionization" issue that
Newport Beach is facing.
The most commob complaint,
however, was that the second-
story addition would intrude
into neighboring homes. Res.i·
dents Harry and Helen Seqpson
argued they would be most af-
fected because a second floor
would give the Vidas too great a
view of their backyard and rob
them of privacy.
"The proposed plans show a
second story with a sitting bal-
cony. 15 to 20 feet from the prop-
erty line, overlooking our back-
yard and thereby eliminating any
privacy," Harry Sergison wrote in
a letter to the city.
Kelly Vida acknowledged his
n eighbors concerns but added
that he no more wanted to look
at them than they wanted to be
looked at. Vida proposed p lant-

them and five letters from resi-
dents of Sumatra Plaae who sup-
ported the development and
agreed it would foster "positive
growth."
"I think times are changing
and the neighborhood is defi-
nitely growing," Kelly Vida said.
"I hope this isn't the bottom line
for development In Costa Mesa."
The Planning Commission
majority expressed interest in
seeing a reconfigured proposal
for the Sumatra home, saying
they did not buy the argument
that no second·story addition
would fit there.

NEWPORT BEACH -A team
of researchers at UC lcvine has
been given funds to launch a
statewide water-quality study,
which will include Upper New-
port Bay and Newport Harbor.
Led by noted scientist and lec-
turer Stanley Grant, who teaches
environmental engineering in
the school's Olemical Engineer-
ing and Materials Science De-
partment, the. researchers are
looking into what role wetlands
play in ocean pollution.
FOR THE RECORD
A Saturday article incorrectly
stated David Ellis' relationship
with the Airport Working Group.
Ellis is a consultant for that
group.
An Aug. 4 article on recycling
in Newport Beach incorrectly
stated the number of California
jurisdictions that met state recy-
cling goals. The Caillomia Inte-
grated Waste Management
board has not completed the
process. of verifying which juris-
dictions have met recycling
guidelines.
"We've known for some time
that coastal wetlands are a criti·
cal habitat for rare and endan-
gered species," Grant said. "The
issue is whether animal feces re-
leased from coastal wetlands are
contributing to beach closings in
SQuthem California."
The UC Office of the Presi-
dent handed Grant and his
team $640,000 to complete the
study.

needed to help uncover answers
to a persistent and enigmatic
trend of postings and closures at
beaches that are caused by 'el-

The Orange County Board

cook the final step toward
helping dock owners more
easily dredge their proper-
ties.
The board unanimously
approved a legal disclaimer
that Is expected to finalize
an ongoing effon to hand
more power to Newport
Beach officials in granting
permits for the work.
"When there are these
relatively small projects that
need to get done, this will
streamline to process," said
LaJTy McKenney, the
county's manager of the
watershed and coastal re-
sources division.
Up until mid-2000, the
Caillornia Coastal Commis-
sion granted the permits.
While the city was given the
authority to issue the "sub
permits" in June of that
year, delays have wreaked
havoc with residents who
have tried to initiate proj-
ects.
The change affects three
sections of the harbor -
the south side of Udo Isle,
South Bay Front on Balboa
Island and Harbor Island -
as well as Dover Shores and
the Newpon Dunes Water-
front Resort's lagoon in the
Back Bay.

I was in the Navy on the ship
Patrol Craft Sweeper 1399
based in San Diego at the
Sonar School when the news
came that the Japanese bad
surrendered on Aug. 14, 1945.
Our crew members had been
closely following the atomic
bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki with the happy
realization that World War U was
soon to be over. We all agreed
the service had been a fabulous
experience but were looking
forward to civilian life.
I would like to mention the
PCS 1399 and its connection
with Newpon Beach.
After being trained as a Navy
sonarman to operate and repair
the underwater sound
equipment for tracldng
submarines, I noticed a ship
being built at the South Coast
Shipyard In my hometown of
Newport Beach and was happily
assigned to the ship. I enjoyed
being able to live at home and
ride my bicycle to oversee the
installadon of the sonar and
radar equipment.
When the ship was
commissioned and was leaving
the harl>or. the captain wanted
to check the fathometer and
asked for the reading. The
fathometer was not working. so I

Just so you lcnow, that was
before South Coast Plaza, the

southbound Costa Mesa

the near whole of Orange
County was a blanlc.et of orange

decades this county could have

Meg Waters, spokeswoman for

sailing our bay and gave him the
correct depth. The captain
checlced the bay charts and was

days.
The ship PCS 1399 was built
with the very latest underwater
technology and equipped with a
pod of missiles called
•hedgehop" that could fire a
ring of missiles to strike a
submarine. The ship also had
the conventional depth charges,
but when depth charges
explode. all track of a submarine
is lost. The missiles would nol
explode unless they hJt the
submarine. Our crew was ready
to get the enemy submarines.
We were doc.lc.ed in San Diego
awaiting oversea orders when
the decision came that the
enemy submarines could outrun
and outshoot our shJp. We were
then transferred to train with
our submarines and coordinate
their trails with destroyer and

Commercials ruin main
feature at Regal Cinemas
Columnist Joseph N. Bell
commented.in his Thursday column
(The BeU Curve, •Easing the hot
temper of summer," Thursday) about
his frustration due to commercials
being shown prior to the movie. He is
right on.
My wife and I went to see the movie
•s;,gns" at the Regal theater (formerly
Edwards) on Newport Center Drive.
Despite blowing about $20 for two
senior tickets, two small popcorn
boxes and one small drink, we were
then treated to a series of commercials
-yep, commercials -about eight of
them as I recall. We couldn't believe it
MAILBAG
Of course, they were followed by
several previews, then -after 20-plus
minutes-the movie (which was
so-so. by the way).
My conclusion: If you are an
investor, avoid Regal; TIVO/Block-

Here's advice for the
inquisitive mother
I feel that Judith Hunt (Mailbag,
•Resident wonders what to tell her
child about upcoming gay rally,•
Friday) should teU her son: The gay
and lesbian community are
hard-workers, educated people; they
could be doctors, lawyers,
booksellers, professionals in her
community; they do community
service; they donate to charities; they
work side by side; they love each
other deeply and very devoted to
each other; and they are wonderful
neighbors and wonderful daughters.
I am so proud of my daughter.
Also I believe that she ought to tell
her son or her child that these people
do not have the rights that her son
bas. They are not allowed to legally
marry the person of their choice; a
murderer in a prison has more rights
than my child not being able to
legally marry the person of her
choice.
I believe this woman has a great
opportunity to educate her child, and
if she needs more information she
can contact parents of gay and
lesbian children. They have an 800
number, and 1 believe she can help
her son immensely with this
education, not for now but for the
future to be a better human being.

Compassion will make
Costa Mesa better place
The other day, I saw a chicken. The
chJcken was In a neighborhood that
la not zon~ for chickens. She was
oblivious to the fact that she was
violating the law. She just kept on
doing the things chickens do. She
was beautiful in all her glorious
chJckenhood. I thought of siinpler
times and smiled.
SuddenJy, my smile turned to a
firmly clenched jaw. The great
protector of chickens' rights was
there. I imagined a lumbering
tank-like vehicle with lights flashing
the words "code enforcement"
emblazoned on the side.
I imagined myself stepping in front
of it just like the brave student
protesting In Cltlna's liananmen
Square and a loud speaker shrieking,
"Mr. Riggle, step away from the
chkken." A few seconds.passed, and
the chick scratched the ground and
walked away. I sighed and continued
my day in this town I love, Costa
Mesa.
The next day as I sort of laughed at
myself for my strange imagination,
the "chicken" took on a new and
deeper symbolic meaning to me.
She represents to me: the Rea
Elementary School health clinic,
Share Ow Selves, shelters of all kinds,
board ~d care homes, the Dyke
Walk. the Job Center and, my own
personal cause, sober-living facilities.
The chicken reminds me that we are
all in this together and that although
certain causes are ugly ducklings to
some, they are beautiful swans to
others.
I feel that with compassionate city
government and the will to do the
right thing during these exciting
times. Costa Mesa will remain a great
place to live, especially for an "odd
egg" like me.

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY
Perfect harmony is
not easy to reach
By Ru11etl Nlewlarowskl
C olumnist Byron de Arakal
raised an intriguing
question on Aug. 4
(Between the Unes, •Another
Schrocking in the name of
harmony"): Just how do you
define the Costa Mesa City
Council's new MHarmony and
Compatibility" policy, and just
whom should It apply to?
If the council's desire Is to truly
improve the city by seeking to
instill harmony and compatibility
throughout the communities,
then to enforce such a poUcy
should mean implementing such
a policy at City Hall first, before
expecting residents to; otherwise,
the residents of Costa Mesa may
be forever lost in a total state of
disaccord.
lmplemepting this harmony
and compatibility policy is a great
idea. Just think of all the positive
changes it woiJ.ld bring:
The Huscroft House is not
harmonious or compatible with
its current surroundings, and
would therefore be
instantaneously destroyed and
removed.
The residents of Santa Ana
Heights are 99.9% opposed to
annexation by Costa Mesa, and
for the City Council to continue
to pursue annexation would
neither be harmonious nor
compatible with the
unincorporated residents who
desire annexat:lon to Newport
Beach.
The ever-looming threat of a
John Wayne Airport expansion is
neither harmonious nor
compatible with most Costa Mesa
residents. Therefore, the City
Council would instantly become
harmonious in giving El Toro a
real voice before being lost to the
Irvine land grabbers.
The city's infamous, pothole
ridden streets are neither
harmonious nor compat:lble with
any resident not sporting an SUV.
and therefore would all be
harmoniously filled.
Gay parades and marches may
be artsy but conflict with the
countless churches in the city,
disrupting harmony among the
God-fearers and would therefore
not be tolerated.
And we can't forget the
Westside. The Westside is
incompatible with the Eastside,
and has created much discord
among residents that the only
way to create harmony and
compatibility would be to do as El
Toro and bulldoze the entire
Westside and rebuild it with great
parlcs and Eastside-priced homes.
If Costa Mesa is to see such
harmony and compatibility, it will
first need to collect a council that
can operate in harmony and
compatibili~. Until then, drive
about Costa Mesa in a Honda
Accord.

An American Higf1:lander
Former Orange Coast women's soccer assistant
coach has been learning Gaelic football, while
preparing to coach at Saddleback College.
Steve Vlr1en
Daily Pilot
B y chance, Brandee Craig
came to know Gaelic
football. However, after
what has transpired over
the past two years ir's as if Craig was
destined to play the sport.
Craig. a fonner Orange
Coast College standout women's
soccer player and an assistant coach,
has been contributing her
experience, athletic skills and
coaching expertise to the Orange
County Roisin team, the defending
Nonh American national champions
in the women's junior division of
Gaelic football.
Gaelic football
could be
described as a
mixture of
Australian rules
football, soccer
and rugby. It is
played with a
ball similar to a
soccer ball.
There is no
tadcling. and,
unlike soccer,
you can use your
hands.
Craig's
supreme
defensive play
and her deftness
of handling a ball
has been a key
component for
her Gaelic
football team.
MThey tried to
get me out three
years ago,~ Craig
said of her
friends and their
attempt or selling
Gaelic football. Ml Brandee Craig
showed up to a
Gaelic football maintains her
athleticism and her knack for
coaching.
"My experience in coaching helps
me in Gaelic football." Craig said.
"And, vice versa. I've been able to see
the game better In both sports."
Craig coached throughout the '90s
at OCC with Barbara Bond. Then,
last year, Craig moved over to
Saddleback. where she became the
first coach of the Gauchos' new
women's soccer program. She led
SaddJeback to an 8-8-2 overall record
last year and was named the Orange
Empire Conference's Coach of the
Year. Craig is also a walk-on girts
soccer coach at Fountain Valley
High.
"I was hired three
weeks prior the start
of the season,"
Craig said of her
start at SaddJeback.
"We had six girls out
there on the first
day of practice. The
team was built sight
unseen. I had girls
ask me il there was
a team and I would
say, 'We do and
you're on it' We dfd
very well in our first
year. I think next
year's team will be
better. The word is
getting out there,
finally."
Craig's love for
soccer can be traced
to her days at OCC
and can be
particularly credited
to Bond. Much
similar to her
chance involvement
with Gaelic football,
Craig stumbled
back in to soccer.
After playing soccer
game two years ago and they stuck
me on the field. My first real game
was Last year, when we were in the
final against San Diego."
"We were down by 14 points at
halftime,• she continued. ~ We ended
up winning by one point. and then
went up to the Gaelic Games in the
Bay Area and won it all All we hear is
that we're Americans and we should
be easily beaten. We can use our feet,
like in soccer, and that gives us a big
advantage."
at F.dison High. she thought that
would be it But. Bond encouraged
Craig to play for the Pirates, and well.
the rest is history, successful history.
Cral.g helped lead the Pirates to
back-to-back South Coast
Conference tides in 1987 and 1988.
She was the team captain in 1988,
when she earned first-team
all-conference honors as a sweeper.
Her defensive skills was a key
component in the Pirates' record,
20-1 -1, l O·O·O in conference. OCC
reached the state finals in 1988, and
along the way, Craig contributed in
team single-season records: longest
winning streak, 18, and fewest goals
allowed. nine.

Orange Coast College product Brandee Craig is entering her second
season of gaelic footbaH, a soccer-like game in which you can use your
hands, with the Orange County Roisin (Irish for 'The Roses·). The team is
getting ready to go to Chicago and compete for the national title.
The O.C Rolsln team recently won
the Southern California regional title,
thus qualifying for the Gaelic Garnes
in Chicago Aug, 29-31. Craig has
been suffering from minor back
injuries recently, but she will be
ready to play in Chicago. She's
looking forward to the competition.
"Tilat was a memorable season,"
said Craig, who still remembers the
team's overall and conference record
of 1988. "I wish I had a team like that
now."
Craig went on to play at San
Francisco State, where she earned
first-team all-conference laurels and
was named the team's MVP. She
came back to Costa Mesa to coach
with Bond. and continued to learn
from her.
"Her biggest contribution to me is
knowing how to take care of players,"
Craig said of Bond's lesson. "When I
came out high school I was ready to
quit soccer. She told me to keep
playing. She's a great friend and an
inspiration for me to coach. She
taught me bow to treat players as
individuals and players."
Bond also taught Craig how to be a
winner. Bond, the only womens
soccer coach in OCCs history, will
begin her 21st season with the
Pirates this fall She led Coast to a
state championship in I 989, and has
been victorious in nearly 70% or her
games. Bonds Pirates will face Craig's
Gauchos at SaddJeback. Oct. 29 at 3
