We have no problem with city government atrivtng to keep a balance in Costa Mesa. We have no problem with Lt making sure that the neighborhood amblence, the look and feel of the community is consistent. That's the key word, tho~ consistent. And that's where we part ways with some recent Planni.ng ·Commission and City Council ded&lona to forbid homeowners from adding a second story to a house. It seems to us the idea that a homeowner can't add a second story is both unreasonable and inconsistent with the rest of the city. 'IWo-story homes are the norm thrQughout Costa Mesa-from the East.side, to the Westside. to Mesa del Mar, to College Park and to Mesa Verde. The common, consistent theme in all these neighborhoods is that the two-story homes coexist right alongmde single-story homes. It's just the way it is and has been for years. In fact. Lt's the • way it is and bu been in probably every city ln the great state of California In the case of Aviemore Terrace, where a bomeowner's two-story piana got shot down by the City Council, there is a two-story home on that very street. Indeed the entire neighborhood is filled with two-story homes. Sdll, the Planning Commia&lon just did the same thing 1\aeaday to a homeowner from Mesa Verde, ~other neighborhood with many a two-1tory home. How can the council or Planning Comthisaion albitrarlly decide any homeowner can't add another story to a home? How can these oftlclals deny this homeowner the very rights enjoyed by their fellow property owners in Costa Mesa and countless other cities? We suspect they can't. Families grow and families need space. To accommodate that lack of space, they either build up or build out. Lacking a lot of square footage on a property means in many cases going up is the best option. Now, we are in no way saying that a.rcb.itectural guidelines and neighborhood character should be thrown out the two-story window. In fact, we are sttong advocates of that consistency and preserving a neighborhood look and feel that all Costa Mesans can be proud of. But those regulations need to be reasonable. In Laguna Beadl. that city bas aeated a Design Revi~ Board. wboee members are d:Muged with approving~~ by homeowneB. With all the changes happening in Cosca Mesa. with the questions about the P.astside and losing that character. maybe a Design Review Board for this town Is long overdue. In voting against the Aviemore Terrace addition, Councilman Gary Monahan urged the homeowners to sue the city and test the laws forbidding them to make these changes to their home. We reaDy think it shouldn't have to go that w. We wp dryleaden to revene these fogy decisions and, with strict guidelines ln place. grant th.ls homeowner the 1a111e rights enjoyed by othen in th.ls town. Y PILOT Planes wait for 7 a.m. to roll around, wflen they have the OK to take to the skies above Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. ·Lessons still have not been learned C olumnist Joseph N. Bell and many of the Pilot readers would like to give E.l Toro a proper burial ("A few things to a.sit before burylng m Toro," July 25}. AB well they should. Removing the "cosmetic makeover," however, will not provide the citizens of Newport Beach the answers that they seek. No, a real autopsy is required, starting with the so-caDed "we voted twice" to have an airport. . Many who voted "yes" on Measure A. back ln 1994. did 80 because they believed the daJ.ma that a commerdal airport at the sooa-to-be-closed Marines base would be a "turnkey" operation. Same flights. same Umfted amount of nolse and operations, the only change would be the color of the uniform. Sure. some also dreamed of taking a flight to London. Rome or 'Ibkyo. bypassing LAX. and some even believed that a commercial airport at El Toro would be an economic engine. The fact that Measure A barely passed while the county was ln a recession susgested. though. that the economic argument was not a decisive one. When the environmental report was releaaed in the summer of 1996, almost two years after the .voters approved Measure A, many jaws dropped. This was not going to be more of the same thing. The proposed airport at El Toro would be the size of San Francisco lntematlonal operating around the clock. Fuel would have to be trucked to the airport -250 tanker trucb a day; the runways would have to be tom and rebuilt and "lntemational" flights meant Mmco md Canada. And while the county promised a politically correct takeoff proposal- away from residential areas -pil~ts and the law of physics claimed the opposite. lndeed, a memo from the Federal Aviation Administration suggested that northerly takeoffs would have to make an immediate left tum to continue toward the ocean over Newpon Beach. These facts that were slowly unearthed by South County communities, together with the economic expansion of the '90s, were what was behind the shift in public oplnJon to realize that a commercial LETTER TO THE EDITOR airport at El Toro was a losing proposition. And yet. I have no doubt that bad the leaders of the Airport Working Group used tact and political savvy, had they approached the communities of South County with an open invitation to consider all possible base reuses, that by now jets would be Oylng at El Toro. Instead, the group's leaders used bullying tactics and demanded that the county follow their wishes and this turned most South C.Ounty voters. as well as others, against Newpon Beach. Based on the continuing arrogant comments from the group'• leaden. on letters claiming that flights ahould not be over expensive bomes and on Bell's demand that noise over his patio be moved to others' -the real lesson of Fl Toro has yet to be learned, lf at all. Spices are what 6rst brought the British, French and other Europeans to the lndlan subcontinent beglnnlng in the late 15th century, and It was this spice trade that helped ftnance much or British colonialism. Luckily the British imported lndian cuisine to their Island, and not the other way around. Aashing forward to this era. the Royal Khyber rataurant ln South Coast Plaza Village has been introducing legions or loyal residents to the exotic charms of lndian cuisine. The restaurant, which was originally ln a strip mall on Bristol Street, was opened in 1980 by Arnn Puri and his wife, Urmil. Their daughter Shallni actually now owns the restaurant; however, she is off at college woricing on a master's degree in business administration. Puri was born in Punjab in northern lndla and immigrated to the United States, where be earned a master's degree in engineering. While here, he began cooking some of the dishes or his native land and, after a visit back to lndia to work in a friend's restaurant, opened Royal Khyber. Some people consider Indian food too spicy and harsh, but good Indian food relies not on overpowering spiciness but on ·delicate blends of many ingredients to create subtle flavor combinations. The menu at Royal Khyber features many tradidonal dishes. and Puri and bis daughter have also attempted to Ugbten up the cuisine by stripping dishes of unnecessary fats and oils. Many dishes are cooked in the restaurant's tandoors, a conical-shaped clay and brick oven fired by mesquite coals. Dinner at Royal Khyber starts with a basket of plain naan. the traditional Indian flatbread. Naan is cooked by slapping discs of raw dough on the sides of the tandoor, and allowing the b read to cook until it falls off the oven wall. The resulting bread is crisp and charred on the outside and still soft inside. Naan can also be ordered with flavorings. such as garlic ($4.25). onion and basil ($4.25), or under the name paratha. stuffed with fillings such as mint or herbs and potato ($3.95). Curries are. of course, popular in India. and featured in dishes such as the curried mussel appetizer ($10.95), a plate of plump mussels steeped in a coconut-infused tomato curry. Our table fought over the last mussel, and we used plenty or naan to sop up the remaining broth. Samosas, light pastry pockets stuffed with a savory filling, are another traditional appetizer. T he new face on Monday Night Football -John Madden -brought rousing cheers from many old fans Aug. 5 at c.anton, ObJo for the annual Pro Hall of Fame game. The list included one of his old college mates from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, by the name of Ted Trompeter, who once served as a sterling taclde at Newport Harbor High on the 8· I '49 grid team. With amusement, be feels the pboto8J"8Ph may well be:lp he celebrate his 70th birthday on Aug. 26. On another note, one of his '49 grid mates from Newport. Gino Boero, a 240-~d tackle as a eophomore, and or\e who was seen once as Harbor H.igh's "Refrigerator" on the line, has joined a new team of late. Boero is excited about the new venture, serving as a member of the volunteer's unit at Hoag Hospital every Tuesday. He rolls a cart around. serving coffee to the patients and their guests. He is also looking forward to volunteer plans for greeters and said, "It sounds like more fun." He and his late father. "Papa Gino," always favored making time and space to help Trompeter, Oass of ·so at Newport, dislocated his shoulder in football at Cal Poly and faded from the turf, but angled on with his skills as a light heavyweight boxer and subsequently won the Pacific College championship as a senior. .-----~ other people. Both once owned popular Italian restaurants in the barl>or area. Boero. a Pilot Sports Hall of Farner, still h as "wonderful recalls" of the '49 grid team, which racked up 323 points In DON those eight victories during the regular CANTRELL season. He also played Reflecting on Madden's Monday Night debut. Trompeter said, "I thought he was great He was just himself. And he really knows how to explain the game." Madden had been an announcer on .two other 1V channels with Pat Surnmeral for years. but the latter'uetirement plans last year left Madd en open for another opportunity. ABC-1V's ratings had been dropping for years and It felt an old pro like Madden could change the picture. Trompeter and his daughter, Jeannette. the anchor for 1V-Otannel 8 in Des Moines. Iowa. who is also a Cal Poly grad, worked one big fund rally at San Luis Obispo with Madden to raise money for the Cal Poly sports program. Trompeter truly enjoyed himself with Madden several years ago at the central coast campus. In fact. he laughed to joke that be finally made the AU-Madden Team. "Not as a player." he explained, •but serving as the hose man when we had to wash John's big touring bus." Trompeter also drew another big surprise last week because Jeannette and St Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner had their picture taken together "and she'll send dad a copy to Paso Robles." She and Warner were working together on a big charity golf tournament that will benefit crippled children. The pro-am tournament was staged in Des Moines. for teams under Al Irwin in '50 and '51. While researching for information on a versatile I larbor High athlete, the late tom McCorkell. Oass of '44, we came across another versatile sort in Glynn Boies. aass of '45. Born in Mangham. La., Boies and his family, prompted by Costa Mesa relatives. chose to leave the South and head for the harbor area In the mld-'30s. The noted relatives included a chap named Bud Attridge, who would, in time, lead Newport to the league basketball championship and become known as an All·Clf star. And the three Nettles brothers. Bob, the late Jim, and Armand, who would also become an AU-Sun.set League choice and a member of the AU-CIF basketball team. Both Attridge and Armand would become Pilot Sports Hall ofFamers. Boies was not only a polished football player at end for Newport in '43 and '44, but also played on the championship '44 basketball team and served as a superb pitcher for the • 44 baseball team. Coach Les Miller was so -impressed with Boies that he named him the team signal caller in '44. Boies was once hospitalized after a face injury in high school. then injured again in the face during a college game and chose to depart the sport.
