Vure. curator at the~ about
how the work got presened.
Vure brought the Qiow to Newport
Beadl from the Santa BaJbara Mu-
seum of Art, Which offered a much
larger, .retrospective view of Groes-
beclc's art, including bis eadier, DOD·
Hollywood pieces. The curator said
she saw fit to select from only the
film-related works, as Southern Cali-
fornia is the home of film.
Vure agreed that the 'Newport
Beach show gives visitors a chance to
"rediscover the artist." The exhibit of
more than 50 paintings and drawings
includes several freeu-framed photo-
graphs that mirror the movie scene
Groesbeck drew. In the case of Groes-
beclc's character sketch of Feodor,
from the movie "The Volga ~atman,"
the actual photo of the actor shows a
character almost identical in cos·
twne, awa and personality. The
painting of a giant squid for DeMille's
"Reap the Wtld Wind" resulted also in
the identical film version of the sea
creature.
"In each case. you can see how
closely the directors and cinematog·
raphers· did rely on these sketches,"
Vuresaid .
Vure credits Groesbeclc's extensive
research for each project, his love for
· detail and his rare connection with
DeMille for producing realistic
sketches.
One story that proves the success of
the two men's partnership was writ-

ten by DeMille's granddaughter Ce-
cilla in the preface to the show's cata·
log. The director wanted to make
"Samson and Delilah." Hollywood
was less than thrilled to make a movie
out of a Bible story. But Groesbeck's
dashin.g and sexy character sketches
of the title roles are said to have capti-
vated backers enough to change their
minds.
Cecilia DeMille also quotes a line
from her grandfather's autobiography
explaining that he so valued the work
of Groesbeck because the sic.etches
left no room for "the misunderstand·
ings whicb can~ when one de-
pends upoQ words ~one for the de-
scription of anything."
Vure added that Groesbeck, who
died in 1950, had the ability to create
"drama" with the use oflightness and
da.dcness, which worked well in the
age of black and white films.
His pieces hang in a room across
from the museum's permanent collec-
tion and its biennial exhibition of very
contemporary work. Though created
as sketches to help with set design,
Groesbeclc's works stand alone as
nothing short of fine art.
"For many years, commercial art il·
lustrations were considered second
class to the fine art of painting and
sculpture," Vure said. "But in con tern·
porary art, these boundaries have
been broken down." l
The museum will also present, to
correspond with the Groesbeck show,
part one of DeMille's •Tue Ten Com-
mandments" today as part of Its Fri-
day Night Film series. The showing
will start at 6:30 p.m.

Hoag gets OK to
add to expansion
GROWTH : Newport Beach officials
allow another 50,000 square feet to be
adped to the East Tower project to
accommodate.state mandates.
Jun• CHa1rande
Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -A
request by Hoag Hospital
to add almost· 50,000
square feet to the next
phase of the hospital's ex-
pansion has won the ap-
proval or city leaders. but
not without some serious
reservations.
Hospital representatives
asked the City Council to
increase the area on which
they could build the
planned East Tower be-
cause state and federal
regulations passed in the
10 years since Hoag's ex-
pansion was approved re-
quire the hospital to make
more space for utilities. as
well as electrical and me-
chanical equipment. The
tower was o.riginally
planned to be 397, 711
square feet.
Peter Foulke, the hospi·
tal's executive vice presi-
dent of corporate services,
emphasized that all the
·hospital wanted was to
have the same amount of
space for health-care serv-
ices as was originally ap·
proved in 1992.
~The health-care needs
in this community are ex-
panding," Foulke said.
"Hoag Hospital is here only
to serve the community.
Were not for profit."
But Councilman Gary
Adams worried that the ac-
tion, as written, could gjve
the hospital carte blanche
to exceed floor-area limits
for future buildings.
"My concern has to do
with the integrity of the
process," Adams said.
"This has the potential of
undoing all the declsion-
making process that took
place a long time ago. I
don'.t think that it's fair to ·
people who were origl-
nalJy involved in this proc-
ess."
Adams on Tuesday sug-
gested allowing the hospi-
tal to expand as requested,
but on the conditions that
the loosened regulations
not apply to future build-
ings and that the hospital
agree not to use any of the
added floor space for traf-
fic-generating uses, such
as patient care.
But fellow council mem-
bers didn't back him up.
Councilman Gary Proctor
made an alternative mo-
tion. The hospital should
agree to Adams' second
condition. Proctor said,
but hospital administrators
should not have to go
through the same process
for future buildings, he
said. Council members
agreed, approving the ac-
tion 6 to l, with Adams' the
only ~no" vole.
But controversy over
Hoag expansion will prob-
ably continue. Some
neighbors have said that
sprawl on the Hoag cam-
pus must be reined in to
prevent problems such as
excessive traffic and noise
generated by emergency
rooms.
"We're doing the Hoag
dance," resident John
O:iamberlain said. "This
should be exposed as a
brand-new approach."

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY
CHOC clinic doesn't
fit at Rea Elementary
League has strong links
to coastal commission
The League for Coastal Protection
and Its founder Susan Jordan, who
declared that Rodolphe Streicbeoberger
·has created a garbage dump on the
ocean Ooor" ("S\a.rwy reveals mixed
opinion or commission," Aug. 10), do
not represent the environmental public.
By Cindy Brenneman
0 n behalf of the board of
directors of Mesa Verde
Community Inc. and its
membership, I am requesting
the Newport-Mesa Unified ·
School District board reconsider
its plan to establish a new
medical clinic a1 the Rea
Elementary School site in the
Estancia school w ne. While we
realize our lcnowledge of the
projecl is limi1ed to recenl
newspaper accounts and the
numerous letters from affected
members of the community,
based upon that information, we
strongly oppose this project.
The proposal as presented is
just too idealistic -providing
medical treatment to ill children
at their very own school site.
However, common sense
dictates that medical treatment
would not be limited only to the
sludents at Rea school Of course
nobody wants to deny medical
treacment to sick little children.
Everyone knows there is a huge
health-care crisis, and that this
crisis is not limited to the
medically uninsured, but to the
underinsured and others as well.
As soon as the public learns of
the free medical clinic's existence,
the seriously ill of all ages from all
over will converge on the Rea
school site. The Newport-Mesa
Unified School District is liable
for the health and safety of its
students and therefore exposing
them unnecessarily to infectious
diseases and kidnapping
possibilities is unacceptable in
this day and age.
There are other issues to
consider as well As you are aware,
the Westside of Costa Mesa
presently is overwhelmed with
unresolved social is.sues and is
working very hard to overcome
those problems. Adding even one
more social service to an area
already suffering from the impacts
of the high nwnber of existing
social services will seriously hann
fragile relation.ships. Rea school
already houses a nonprofit. Save
Our Youth.
Therefore, please do not
overlook the concerns of the
community. The idea oflocating
this clinic on the campus of an
elementary school in the middle
of a residential neighborhood is
simply ludicrous. We need more
classrooms and quality teachers
on school grounds, not a free
clinic.
We would like to propose that
CHOC and the district consider
other locations for this clinic.
We understand the serious need
for health care and support the
concept in general, but please,
not at this location. We ask you
to please consider the negative
impact this location would add
to the already overburdened
Westside residents.
We will attend the next
school board meeting to learn
mo re about what is being
proposed at Rea school and
express our thoughts. In the
meantime, if there is any
information you could provide
for us to share with our board
and membership, it would be
appreciated.

Greenlight efforts will
maintain this residential town
Richard Stevens (Rebuttal,
"Greenllght endangers Newport's
quality of life," Sunday) Inadvertently
makes the case for Greenllght when he
describes his developments In Carmel
and Monterey. He readily admits that
voters would have rejected these
projects had they come to the ballot
after city approval. ·
Apparently, Carmel and Monterey
suffer from the same Jack or
representative government that
Newport Beach <lid prior to
Greenlight's approval. If residents so
clearly opposed these project.a, why
would a representative government
approve them? In Newport Beach, the
city's own visionlng process found that
residents overwhelmingly do not want
any more hotels built. This was dearly
apparent during hearings for the
proposed Dunes hotel a few years ago.
yet the Planning Commission
approved this monstrosity of a hotel
and the City Council was poised to
approve it If Greenlight had failed.
ln short, representative government
only worb for the little guys If the
playing field Is completely level and.
prior to Greenligbt. it was not Developer
interests virtually always trumped
resident opposition. Newport Beach will
remain the residential town that Stevens
loves only because the residents voted to
retain the final say on the future
development of Newport Beach.

Newport Harbor
High product crushes
K.rayzelburg by more
than two seconds in
the 200 backstroke.
FORT LAUD~ Aa. -If
there were any q~tions of who
reigns as the wortd's backstroke
king, Aaron Peirsol answered
them all Thursday at the Phillips
66 National Swimming Qiampi-
onships.
Pelrsol, the Newport Harbor
High product who is headed for
the University of Texas, displayed
his competitive fire in the 200·
meter backstroke and defeated
former world-record holder.
Lenny ICrayzelburg, by more
than two seconds.
Peirsol. the current world-re-
cord bolder in the 200 back. was
just about a second off his record
time, finishing in l :56.21. ICray-
zelburg followed in I :58.67.
Krayulburg, a 2000 Olympic
gold medalist who is making a
comeback from shoulder •sur-
gery, had a 1:59.33 time in ·the
200 back in July, at the Janet Ev-
ans Invitational. That's where
Peirsol also won, by 24 one-hun-
dredths of a second.
Peirsol, who Jed Newport I !ar-
bor to its first CIF Division . I
swim title in May, led throughout
the race. All of his splits were
faster than Krayzelburg's. Peir-
sol's final 50 was a 29.95, while
Krayz.elburg had a 31.27.
With the victory; Pel.rsol cap-
tured hls seventh national title.
He has three in the l 00 back and
four in the 200 back.
Just as he did for the Sailor$ in
May, Peirsol has been contribut-
ing points for his club team, Ir-
vine Novaquadcs, in the National
Swimming Oiampionships. The
Novas have increased the 10~
point lead they had through 20
events. After 26 of the 34 events,
the Novas have 427 points in the
combined team scores. Circle C
trails with 281.50 points. The
Novas, coached by Dave Salo the
head man of the Orange Coast
College swimming teams, have
not won a national team tide.
They have won a women's title,
AYSO
which came last year. This sum-
mer, the Novas' women's team is
ahead of Auburn Aquatics' by a
208-169 margin. Novas' men are
second in their field, tralllng Cir-
cle C 303.50-219.
In May, Peirsol completed one
of the more outstanding prep
swimming performances when
he won two events (200-yard
free, 100 back), and contributed
in two victorious freestyle relays,
the 200 and school record-break·
ing 400. Peirsol concluded his
high school swimming days with
seven CIF individual titles. in·
eluding four in the JOO baclc. Af-
ter his performance he revealed
his version of reward for his ef-
forts.
"The CIF team title eclipses
everything I did in that meet." be
said.
Peiraol's younger sister, Hayley.
will compete today at the Sum-
mer Nationals io the 800 free-
style. She is seeded second. Hay-
ley Pel.rsol, the Newport Harbor
senJor-to-be who finished fifth in
the 400 Individual medley Mon-
day, will also race in the 1.500
free Saturday.
She is seeded ninth in that
event.
Nicole Mackey, who will also
be a senior at Newport Harbor in
.the fall, will compete in the 200

COSTA MESA -Soccer Is life for
James Angelsea, Stephen Nicholson,
Ben Penfold, Mark Coulson and Wtl-

sport has become a strong influence
for the young soccer players at the
AYSO Region 120 camp this week.
Their most important message: fun.
Angelsea, Penfold, Coulson and
Mawson are from England, and Nich-
olson is from Scotland. They are with
the MLS Camps, and they are serious
about soccer. Yet, with the children at
the Costa Mesa Fann Fields, they
have lowered the tone and increased
the enjoyment.
"Soccer is life," Mawson said of
how the sport Is thought of in New-
castle. "Where I come from, it's like a
religion."
Mawson, just as his four friends,
are coaches and they said they are
enjoying their time with the young
soccer players. Their love for the
sport and the belief that It produces a
