NEWSROOM

the story as did television
stations.
Rumors swirled that Holdren
was a victim of either a prank
gone awry or some evildoers
bent on pelting people with
paint, evildoers or pranlcsters
who had not owned up to their
crime.
But slowly, the paintball story
started to change as coroner
officials downplayed the
significance of a paintball strike
and instead proposed that
Holdren had been injured by
falling while inline skating and
then strildng the back of his
head, causing trauma to his skull
and brain!
Finally, on Aug. 9, four months
to the day of Holdren's death, we
finished our reporting with the
story that concluded: "Paintball
pellets not the cause of death."
At least that's what the coroner is
telling us now.
We still get letters to this day,
wging the paintball shooters to
come clean and admit to their
crime-even though it's
possible there never were any
paintball shooters at all.
One of my favorite editors has
a very apropos line in which he
says, "you can't unstir the drink. ..
The Holdren paintball case is
a classic example of that the
drink has been stirred and
there's little chance to keep
things from being mixed up.
Newspapers, by their nature, ·
have to stir the drink. We report
tbinp in a hurry. sometimes
wlth little facu and without the
luxury of taking the time to
double and triple check sources.
We need contention, controversy
and stories worth reading.
Isn't it much more eiciting to
write a sto_ry about a guy getting
ambushed by paintball lhootera
than if he Umply slipped and feD

REACllNG BACK INTO
HISTORY
Water agencies haVe been
chlorinating ddnkiog water for
more than 150 years.. Back in
1850, John Snow first used the
chemical to disinfect the water
supply in London after a cholera
outbreak. Regular chlorinadon of
drinking water didn't begin until
i891, also in London. In this
country, chlorinadon began for
the first time in Jersey City in
1908.
The more widespread adop-
Tuday, local water districts like
Meea CooloUdated 8till employ
the method.
•1n order to awid any devel-
opment of bacteria, a very low
level of chlorine keeps [the wa-
ter! from going bad," said Di-
ana Leach, Mesa's general man-
ager.
Mesa uses small doses of
chlorine, because the water
they pull from the ground water
wells is clear.
Using chlorine on sewage is
another matter. so Orange
County Sanitadon District offi-
cials use much higher doses of
the bleach on its sewage.

Rick Dill, the president of On~ne Builclin'g Products, Inc., in Newport Beach creates custom-designed Web sites to fit a company's specific needs.
Expanding into cyberspace
Businesses can add to its size and customer base not by knocking down walls,
but with a few clicks of the mouse.
ChrlstJne Carrillo

I n an age where computers have
become an integral part of
everyday life, the business world
has needed lo remain ahead of
the game. More and more people
seelcing information look to the Web
to find it, replacing the days of
making inquiry phone calls and trips
to the office.
Now, potential customers and
clients want their questions answered
with the cUclc of a mouse. And what
better way for businesses to oblige
them than through an infonnadve
Website.
"1 thinlc every single industty can
benefit from having a Web site," said
Riclc Dill, president of Online Bullding
Products, a Web site design company
in Newport Beach. "We do
custom-designed Web sites that meet
the company's needs based on the
image the company wants to project."
And just as brochures have done
for years, Web sites can reOect the
quality of a company and even
virtually augment Its size. With one
visit, customers can get a feel for the
capabilities of a company based
en~ly on the productivity of its Web
site.
"It shows what you're company is
capable of," said Elana Siegel, a
marketing assistant for Woddview

interactive."
And many Web site8 aren't just
providing information anymore.
As the computer industry
continueli to replace Its technology at
a rapid pace with increasingly
sophisticated appUcations, the .role of
Web sites among various companies
often expands.
The Web site of Online Building Products, Inc., based in Newport Beach.
ln many cases, a Web site can serve
as a cost-effective means of
conducting business, providing an
economical way to share information
among employees and customers,
said Dill.
By establishing applications that
allow companies to download and
upload files or send mass faxes,
companies alleviate some of thelr
work.load and expense. And by
serving as an onllne storefront to
millions of people around the world,
a Web site can also enhance the
company's business reach.

By providing customers with an
opportunity to make changes to thelr
itineraries. check their flight status
and make reservations, the role of a
good Web site within the travel
industry has proven to be one of
convenlence, especially for Its
corporate clienU. Siegel said.
•
Similarly, the restaurant industry
and its customers have benefited
from the convenience of a site.
"It's just another vehicle that allows
us to reach our guests," said Frank

chief operations officer for Newport
