Thursday was 0 -Day, as City Council-

While about 20 residents, including

representatives from three government

out a coordinated search-and-don't-de-
stroy mission to round up about 60
ducks. Their objective: to get the last
quack in an ongoing saga to correct a
smelly situation on the Grand Canal
Here's how it worked:
Step 1: Slip Donald a mickey: A U.S.
Department or Agriculture official put a
mild sedative into some food, then gave
it to the trusting Grc10d Canal ducks. ln
no lime, all but the three smart enough
to eschew the food were bobbing disori-

Stanton animal-handling firm Safety
First got into another. Working from
either end or a small stretch or the canal,
they closed in on the dazed and con-
fused fowl. '
Step 3: Duck scoop: They were literally
sining ducks, so u was hardly sporting
for the four guys who easily plucked
them out or the water with nets.
Step 4: Cover your tail. A U.S. Depart-

hand to oversee the whole thing, making
sure it was all legal and humane. if not

COSTA MESA -In a state of emergency,
seconds are crucial as employees from vari-

On Thursday, Costa Mesa officials staged
an emergency drill as part of thelr contin-

with the chaos that ensues after a crisis.
The scenario: a hazardous materials spill
caused when a tanker with an unknown
liquid collided with a school bus at Harbor
Boulevard and the San Diego Freeway.
The simulation enabled the participants
to immerse themselves in the heated at-
mosphere of a crisis situation so they will

I would never call for the pro-

ABLE officers offered to give

From that altitude, Costa Mesa

was hard for me to gel my bear-

Gleason took us from over my

heart of the Westside in mere
seconds. Once there, we circled
high above Pomona Avenue and

the binoculars to get a closer

He explained that from the aJr,

("CHOC clinic has no place

Costa Mesa residents are sick

in our neighborhoods.
For those "well-meaning''
school and city officials who
live in other parts of Costa

As for the need for commercial
development and increasing
housing density to increase
revenue, San Marino eJected to
maintain Its zoned.business
areas without the addition of
auto dealerships and rnaJtets. In
order to fund increasing
municipal costs, a property tax

four years to maintain the police

Volunleerism is a nother

Giant squid have stayed
around a lot longer than
expected and have produced a
big mess on the streets of Balboa
when anglers. who have
forgotten to bring wheel
barrows, drag gunny sacks of
very inky squid on the
boardwalk and across major
intersections.
Some locals are also
complaining about the slains
and the stink. but the odds are
that the schools of squid will
soon head to deeper water and
this fishery will slowly dry up.
Albies are mixed in size,
ranging from the slze of footballs
to 30-pounders.
With so-so bait available
fishing has been up and down
on a daily basis for most boats
heading out to the fishing
grounds.

he sighted a tailing striped
marlin. Doug Daniels of
Huntington Beach owns the
boat and cast a live mackerel to
the billfish that swung on the
bait.
The fish was successfully
broughl to leader and released,
which earned the boat the first
fish Oag for the season from the
Balboa Angling Oub.
There are re pons of lots of
swordfish in the channel, some
as close as three miles off Dana
Point, and veteran bWfish
anglers are looking forward to an
awesome season.
There was a 257-pound marlin
caught earlier this week off
Oceanside, which is a big fish for
this early in the season.
With the water temp in the
high 60s, and on some high
spots reaching into the low 70s,
it looks as though anglers who
have trips planned over the
upcoming Labor Day weekend
are In for some very good fishing
out of Newpon.
