. ~ersonal care and companionship for
seniors in the comfort of their own home
My aging mother informed me that of her four children: she designates me,
her eldest daughter, as the "plug puller" if and when she becomes a burden or
dependent upon her family. She values her quality of life and dignity and
prefers to remain at home and independent as long as possible. Pretty straight
talk from a strong lady.
Fortunately, my m other is in excellent health and since that conversation I
discovered Caring Companions At Home -a program designed for seniors
who do not require constant care, but do need help with personal care, meal
preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, laundry, errands and
companionship in their own homes.
Many seniors and their loved ones do not realize that there are alternatives
to assisted living and
nursing homes for a
situation that does not
require extensive care.
Owned by Diane
Mondinl, Caring
Companions At Home is
a trusted resource for
affordable, at-home
companionship and
caregiving for seniors.
They have 18 years of
experience and service
in the Orange County
senior community.
Caring Companions at
home offers a personal
touch and maintains an
ongoing relationship with
their bonded, Insured
companions and clients.

A bit of relief for full-time caregivers
He was a colonel and a fighter pilot. But today, at age 85, he suffers from a
form of dementia called Leuey Body and can't be left alone.
The colonel's wlfe prefers to take care of her husband at home. She likes to
work out at the gym, but it's hard t.O get away from her responsibilities.
The FJexCare program at Aliso Laguna VUlage provides her with a needed
respite. The program gives those who care for people with memory loss a
chance to sleep all night without worrying, visit with friends or perhaps even
go out of town for a few days.
"I've used the flex care program for over 18 months," said a resident's wife
who asked not to be identified. "My husband goes to AJiso Laguna Village
three days a week for four to six hours, which gives me a chance to run
errands, go to a movie and just be able to do things on my own."
The FlexCare program is not your typical day care program as residents
actually have a semi-private room and ~athroom during their stay. Licensed
nurses are on-site seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Regardless of when a
visitor may stay at Aliso Laguna Village, there i s always some type of activity
-games, physical exercise, entertainment, bus trips and even cooking
demonstrations .
"On Fridays, there is a Happy Hour complete with non-alcoholic beer and
hors d'oeuvresl"
Using the FlexCare program is also an excellent way to transition a loved
one into the routine of residential care; many residents have actually used this
program as a stepping stone to permanent placement.
The cost of FlexCare includes all of the care and amenities enjoyed by our
regular residents. Take advantage of the Summer Special: stay one night and
receive the second night free.

· UCJ Coach Paul Smolinski
wants that provetbial switch on
througbout the year, especially
s~ce there are lofty goals. lbe
Anteaters are setting tl}eir sights
on Stillwater, Okla., where the
NCAA Oiampionships will be
held.
Last year, Irvine finished 22nd
in the NCAA West Regional and
did not advance. However, the
Anteaters have three key return-
ees and two additions, whom
plan to give Irvine the opportu-
nity to return to the NCAA
Ouunpionships, as it did in 2000.
"The big goal for us is to
qualify for regionals and then to
qualify for the (NCAA Champi-
onships," said Smolinski, who
will be in his fifth year with the
Anteaters. He has been the Big
'West C.Onference Coach of the

players. We feel with the guys we
have coming back and with the
new guys, we have a real good

Seniors Mike Lavery, Ryi.n
Annstrong and Jeff Coburn are
three reasons the Anteaters have
confidence they will repeat as
Big West champions.
Lavery finished second in the

ballero Country Oub in Tanana
Last year, he was named to the
PfNG All-Pacific Region team. He
led the Anteaters with a 72.44 av-
erage last season, recording
three top-10 finishes and six
top-20 showings.
"Mike has shown he has im-
proved his game every year,"
STEVE McCRANK/OAILY PILOT
Mike Lavery is one of UCl's blue chips as the season approaches.
Smolinski said. "As Jong as he
can keep doing that he can be a
great leader, just as he was last
year."
Armstrong won a three-way
playoff for the Big West individ-
ual title in April He edged C.0-
bum and Pacific's Matt Hansen
on the first hole of the playoff.
Armstrong and Coburn continue
to improve, as th'e Anteaters pre-
pare to open the season at the
Pacific Invitational in Stockton,
Sept. 23-24. The second half of
the season begins in February.
Freshman Jay 01oe, from
Yorba Linda High, and junior
transfer Vinnie Poncino, from
Saddleback College, are two new
additions who are exp~ed to
deliver key contributions. Senior
Nick Asbrock has been diligent
in his training to improve his

he wants to wait and see how the

"It's hard to repeat (as state

Expectations are very high for
