right to continue providing water

The credits that appear on the

based on the assessment taxes

homeowner will get about $720
this year. though some will get as
little as $80 and a few will get as

SANTA ANA HFJGI ITS -The pride of

a l p.m. tee time at Santa Ana Country
Oub, and defending champion Debbie
Albright of Newport Beach Country
Oub summed it up best for the golfers
competing in the 18-hole event that
celebrates the four club champions in
the Daily Pilot circulation.
"We have all paid our dues to get out
there and play together,· Albright said
of the featured foursome in Tea Cup
Oassic VI at Santa Ana, where the pub-
lic is invited to gallery at the oldest golf
club in Orange County (I 0 I years old)
as long as individuals meet the required
dress code.
Albright, a seven-time Newpon

tive Tea Cup field in Akemi Khaiat of
Mesa Verde Country Oub, Olivia Slutz.ky
of Big Canyon Country Oub and lhree-
time Tea Cup winner Marianne ToweP-·
sey of the host club, which also hosted
Tea Cup Oassic lJ in 1998. 'The four
clubs in this newspaper's circulation ro-
tate as host site.
"Ir's always a little more difficult play-
ing in the Tea Cup Qassic, because
we're not used to playing with a crowd
around us. That brings added tension to
the game." Albright said. referring to
past Tea Cup galleries, in which rolling
auwds reach about 200.
The winner ofTea Cup Oassic VI, part
of the Aetcher Jones Motorcars/ Daily
Pilot Oub Championship Series that
was launched in 1997, will receive a per-
petual trophy to be displayed at their
home club, as well as a championship
glass vase. And, of course, the chance to
be crowned the Pilot's local golf queen
for 2002.
"It's going to be great." said Towersey.
who won Tea Cup titles in 1998, '99 and
2000, and is the Newport-Mesa commu-
nity's all-time leader in club champion-

In addition to playing on her home
course, Towersey enters Tea Cup Oassic

shot a career-low 4)9 last month at Santa
Ana Country Oub -one of the few golf-
only clubs in the state -and a women's
amateur course-record 68 at Newport

"Marianne has been playing very

said Khaiat, who will play in her first Tea

six straight Mesa Verde women's club ti-

Pirates are trying to come
together and .shed the
individualism that
haunted them a year ago.
Steve Vlr1en

COSTA MESA -In community coll ege
football, or as some call it. juco football.
selfishness is practically expected. It
seems as if everyone is out for them-
selves, trying to move
on to the next level,
hopefully NCAA Divi-
sion I-A football.
Such was the case for
the 2001 Orange
Coast College foot·
ball team.
One year removed
from their dream
season with a One LA-=.;;.:a;;;o..-::-....i

appearance, the Pi-Taylor
rates came aashing
baclc to earth. Individuality enveloped
the Bucs last year, and that was one of
several reasons OCC had an under·
achieving season that resulted in a 3-7
record. Coast went 1-4 in the Mission
Conference Central Division.
While not as extreme as the 2000
team concept, this year's Pirates are in-
tent on shaking off the WI" mentality
that plagued them last year. Gone is
Marvin Simmons, a 2000 Parade AlJ.
American out of Long Beach Poly, and
the hype that followed him. He trans-
ferred to play at Compton College.
WThe Marvin Simmons situation sel
us back qulte a bit," Taylor said of the
star linebaclcer who was injured in the
6rst game of the season and did not re-
turn. ~We never really had an opportu-
nity to deaJ with a guy like him. He was
never really part of the team. Unfortu-
nately. that happens at a junior college."
However, there is a solution for the Pi -
rates, Taylor said.
WThe kids have to buy in to our men-
tality," Taylor said. wThey have to forget
about their own reason why they are at
a community college. (Juco football) is a
little selfish because the players are
looking out for themselves. They have to
realize that If every one does well then

every one will get paid (so to speak). If Steve Vfr1en

If the Pirates are looking for an exam-
ple of the teamwork mentality, they
need look no further than their most
valuable facet the offensive line. Taylor
calls rus offensive line the team's
strength and goes as far as to say they
are the leaders of the squad.
The OCC offensive line has .also made
a concerted effort to mesh because they

COSTA MF.SA -At this time last year. the Orange Coast
College football team could hardly contain ttself with its
excitement for the 2001 season.
Fresh off their Mission Conference Central Division co-
championship. the Pirates' coaching staff said OCC had
completed its best recruJting season in 16 yea.rs. One
coach, offensive coordinator Sean Ponder, stamped high
expectations on the Bucs with the following statement
MThis year we want to win the whole thing and go
10-0," Ponder said before the 2001 season. "That set.a up a
pretty high standard. But IQ definJtely attainable."
All of that went for naught. Injuries. individualism and
inexperience accounted for the Pirates' demise last year.
However, the 2002 campaign I.a a season of change.
Ponder left to coach arena football ln Kansas. Ool.18
Smlth, the 14-year NFL veteran who coached the offen-
sive line the past two years, tabs over as the Pirates' of-
fensive coordinator. OCC also added defensive line coach
Scx>tt Odoft', who waa the head cbacb at Dana Hills Htgb.

also the defensive coordinator.
