Orange County's top attomeys'trade

candidates in the three remaining races
for superior court judgeships.
The Orange County Bar Assn., on
Wednesday, handed Costa Mesa trial

rating. Sandoval's oppqnent, Dana

participate in the a.ting process. The
two are running for Office No. 21.
Campaign headquarters for
Republicans, in the Newport-Mesa
area, will be at 901 Dover Drive, #100.
As part of the agreement, Davia
agreed to slash more than the $750
million from a $99-billion budget that
once included a string of tax bikes.
A grand opening ceremony has been
set for Tuesday. Cindy Simon, the wife
of gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon,
has said she will pop in at the
headquarters around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
But after Campbell, the
vice-chairman of the budget
committee, and other Assembly
Republicans drew a tine in the sand,
Davis agreed to cut another $300
million, in a blue-pencil veto.
The group also reiterated Its ratings
for candidates in the other two races.
Volunteers hope to assist Republican
candidates with any of the heavy-lifting

Jo Miller, the headquarters
co-chairwoman. MIUer, a Costa Mesa

'Tm pleased with what we achieved,"
Campbell said. "We got the major tax
increases all eliminated."
On Feb. 25, the group banded Deputy
Dist Alty. Kelly MacP.achem a
"qualified" rating. Her opponent, Vickie
Bridgman, also a deputy district
attorney, was rated as "not
recommended."
"We do folding and stuffing and
anything we can to help any
Republican candidate," Miller said.
Davis bad proposed increas es to

among others.
Both woman live in Newport Beach

In the race for Office No. 27, the

qualified" rating in her race against
David Brent. who was deemed to be
"qualified."
The travel agency has even loaned
the campaign its office furniture. The
office has Mtons of outlets" for phone
banks, Miller said.
No local programs will be
impacted by the spe nding cuts,
including the $9.2 million for the
restoration of the cottages in CrystaJ

Erin Brown, 27, knows a thing
or two about setting goals. While
one of her finit goals as a child -
to be the finit woman in the NBA
-didn't pan out, the petite
Brown did manage to play in the
WN8A for a season.
After accomplishing that goal,
she set out and attained a new
one -to become a firefighter.
On Wednesday, Brown and
two other firefighters spoke to
students at Harbor View El

school's annual campaign -
"Sail Away with the Three R's," or
readiness, responsibility and re·

Brown encouraged the stu-
dents to start getting ready for
their future by setting goals.
"They can change as you grow
up, but it's imponant that you set
goals and worlc toward achieving
them."
The firefighter!> talked about
the three R's, how they relate to
their job and why they are '>O im·

year, school staff thought invit·
ing firefighters to deliver the re-

Saluting our
educators
. and stridents
I t seems like just
yesterday we were
extolling the virtues of
local high school
graduates and all their
accomplishments and ·
bidding fareweU to yet
another school year.
But here it is September and
back to the classroom we go.
Or at least, back to the
classroom go thousands of
combined students from
Newport-Mesa Unified, Sage
Hill and a host of other
private schools, Orange Coast
College, Vanguard University
and UC Irvine.
Reflecting back, we are
reminded that while last
school year was filled with
many triumphs, it also
brought its share of troubles
and even tragedies.
Both Costa Mesa High and
OCC started off the year with
the death of two athletes. At
Newport Harbor, there were
controversies over
Confederate Oags and
cheerleaders. At OCC a
professor created controversy
in his classroom demeanor
and, at UCI, fires broke out in
the science building.
While those lowlights
garnered much publicity, we
don't believe that can ever
take away or diminish from
the hundreds of awards and
citations that both teachers
and students and
student-athletes achieved
last school year alone.
So, we'd really like to take
this time to reflect on those
triumphs and hope for more
of the same this year. So we
propose a few toasts:
To the students who pay
attention and study, graduate
with honors, take part in
sports and make the best of
their educational experience,
we salute you.
To the parents who pack
those lunches, help with the
homework and provide the
moral support and guidance,
we salute you.
To the teachers who work
day in and day out to
improve their students, make
them better cit:iz.ens and
teach them valuable lessons,
we salute you.
To the administrators who
keep up with the latest in
curriculum and educational
trends and push for
improvements in SAT scores,
we salute you.
To the school board
members, for taking precious
time out of your personal
lives to provide leadership to
our youth, we salute you.
To them all. we wish the
best for the 2002-03 school
year and hope that it is filled
with more triumphs than
ever before.

I think this is a wonderful
article {A Ooser Look.
"Residents ask, 'whose flight is it
anyway?"' Monday), but what J
am displeased at is that there is
no answer in there. There's no
numbers. not anyone to reach,
no specifics for Costa Mesa
residents to call anybody to
complain to or let them lcnow
that we don't want this to
happen and that needs to be
published, especially when
you're making an editorial
about, we don't want this, let the
residents speak out and give
them somewhere to speak up to.
We would low to do that and if
it's printed there It would be
much easier.

In my, not so humble opinion. we have

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY
Editorial favors the wrong homeowner
By Ollve M. MHwell
I am a relative newcomer in
our neighborhood, having only
lived here for 15 years, but I
have to respond to a couple of
items In your Aug. 15 editorial
in the Daily Pilot
("Home-addition options must
be kept open').
If you had attended the
several sessions of the Costa
Mesa Oty CoWlciJ and
Planning CoWlciJ meetings. you
would have heard the various
neighbors who have spoken out
on this matter, and written
detailed letters of protest The
homes In this area are not
predominantly two-story on
Aviemore Thn:ace. They are
one-story homes, with one
exception on the south side of
Gleoeagles Terrace. On the
north side of Gleneagles. they
are almost all two stories. Mine
is possibly the only exception.
Nooe of the homes are
precluding the views of the
other homes in the vicinity..
which is our basic argument
here.
The Clarks have been in
residence O believe) for less
than one year, so they are
newcomers In the direct sense
of the word It is further my
understanding that they are
newlyweds and have no
cbf)dren. The addition they
seek to build is primarily to
enhance the value of thelr own
property at the expense of the
longtime residents who will. of
course, have the values of their
homes reduced with the Joas of
their views.
The editorial indicates
that "families grow and need
space.· In this case, this is
not a factor. Inasmuch as
the home is a rec ent
acquisition, surely the
purchasers must have
known that it might not fit
their growing family needs
in the future. Remember,
they have no children. There
ls always the possibility that
these newcomers could add
to their property by building
the requested addition and
could-rum around and sell
the same for a substantial
profit. Meanwhile, those
around them, having lived In
this neighborhood for m uch
or their lives, will be stuck
with properties lessened in
R S RESPOND
value because of their loss of
views, etc.
Have you attended any of
the above-mentioned
meetings and listened to any
of the arguments? From your
editorial, It would appear
you either have not or have
misinterpreted what was
being said.
Jo your editorial, you end
up by stating the
homeowner should be
granted the same rights
enjoyed by other in this
town? lo this case, It Is the
"other" who will be
penalized, while your
so-caJled homeowner ts
enjo~g his rights.
