FootbaJ.l scrimmage
means different things to
different coaches, but

P reeeason scrimmages are lib

evayone has one. Prep football
ooecbes, it seems, have differing vtewa
about how best to utilize the dress
rebeersal. including issues as elemental as: well. bow to dress.
Practice attire has become the
wardrobe of choice for Newport-Mesa
schools. the coaches for which are
among those who believe the

Playing in the afternoon, rather than

diffuse the
"scoreboard" mentality funher by
entering three-team scrimmage
agreemenls.
Preventing ou~1de evah.lation is yet
another concern for coaches. who
invariably shuffle their scrimmage
schedule in order to anend and scout
their Week 1 opponent's scrimmage.
That means a good portion, if not all of
their opponent's coaching.staff is in the
o;tands watching them compete, as weU.
With practice numbers that differ
from those of game Jerseys, it can be a
rhallenge to identify personnel for
..couling purposes. CdM, in fact. makes
11 vinually impossible by competing in
practice jerseys which have no
numbers at all.
5ubterfuge, however. is only part of
1 he motivation for the aversion to
rnak.ing the scrimmage an "11th game."
A c.ouple local coaches said keeping
the -.crimmage expen ence low key
helps to preserve the uruque
anticipadon and atmosphere that
comes with the actual season opener.
Other coaches believe they can learn
more abou1 their teams by slicing the
Oow of the scrimmage into controlled
segments. rather than the
move-the-chains constricts of a
regulation contest.
It is, of course, difficult to improve

the Tournament of Ownpions final
for the second straight year.
"We have nine or 10 girl& who can

"We have quite a few girls up from

iors.·
Wolfe lost six aenJora from last

Alison MdJmzle. Alhena Vasquez
and Carlin Schneider. but expecta
those spott to be filled, keeping the
defense strong.
Vasquez hu a letter of intent for
softball and has been scouted,
Wolfe said.
"We lost our basic back unit,"
Wolfe said.
Even with the losses, Wolfe has
plenty of girl~ to fiU in the spaces
around the relumers that include
midfielder Jill Whitfield, co-captains
Amanda Wittman (goalie) and
Christina Barbatli, last year's Sunset

Wolfe expects verbal leadership 10
come from Wittman.
·The strongest one in {verbal

said.
l\vo players Wolfe pulled up from

the team's only sophomore. whom
Wolfe said will play defense, and
junior Ashley Harrison.
•(Harrison) Is going to be pretty

a tremendous amount of speed and
she's our best player at aeatlng

maturity."
Wolfe has also pulled up thiee
front-line players from lut season'•

with junior varsity midfielder last

Meagan McHone and Dana Owad,
who "should add some good
strength." according to Wolfe.
Tiffany Vandersloot, Dan1eUe

for Wolfe, who said this year's team
"has fairly good chemistry."
Wolfe said the Sunset League
shouid be improv~ from last year.
which makes winnJn8 a third-

ficult.
·we should finish in the top four,
but the league has gonen better,"
Wolfe said. "(Wtnning league) could
happen. but that's more of a long-

talking about a thtte-peat but that's
going to be tough. We are weaker on

Unusually suspect
Sage Hill enters
progr.am's varsity
debut, Friday
against visiting
Midway Baptist,
with perhaps more
questions than
answers, so far.
Barrr Faulkner Daily P*>t
NEWPORT COASf -As a
detec:dve with the ~n
Beach Police Department, Tom
Monarch is accustomed to the
pmsuit of suspects. This
should serve him well as he
prepares to coach Sage Hill
High through its first varsity
foocball season. which begins
Friday at 4 p.m. at home
against Midway Baptist of San
Diego.
There is, you see. much that
is suspect about the Lightning.
which will try to blend the ex-
perience returning players
have gained in two seasons or
lower-level competition with
more than a dozen newcomers.
most of whom are freshman
who bad never strapped on a
helmet -at any level -before
the first day of pads, Aug. 29.
With roughly 10 practices to
date {the team did not practice
twice a day before school
started, a rarity among Orange
County prep programs) and
without the benefit of a scrim·
mage {a planned get-together
fell through due to a lack of
communicadon). formation of
a lineup. let alone a depth
chan bas been problematic.
·1be preseason is definitely
going to be an eye-opener,·
Monan:h said. ·As coaches.
we've got our wort cut out for
us to prepare our young kids to
play varsity competition. Our
theory is to slowly incorporate
the kids with little experience
with the other kids.·
That blending process will
take at least the first few
games, according to Mon.;p"Ch,
who said fundamental instruc·
tion for some newcomers be·
gan with the three-point
stance.
•For the first month and a
balf. we won't scrimmage as
much as other teams,· Mon·
arch said. ·1 anticipate we will
probably begin to click about
Week 3. The first couple games.
we're going to be experiment·
ing with a lot of ldds. •

varsity players,• Monarch said.
This year's four-team Ac.ad·
emy League Includes CapbtJano
Valley Ouistian and Bredlren
Ovistian. ranked No. 2 and No.
5, respectively, in the OF
Southern Section Division xm
preseason poll. So. a top-two fin-
ish required for an automatic
playoff benh is not expected
from the Lightning. Monarch.
however. said patience is needed
as his prograin makes the transi-
tion to the varsity level
"It's going to be an adventure
for all of us. which makes it
fun,· Monarch said ·one of
the reasons I really wanted to
coach .!t this school was be-
cause there really were no ex-
pectations. But, through hard
wort. good things wiH happen.
It's a very unique situation this
year and I really couldn't tell
you what to ex.peel or how
we're going to do. But I think I
have a bunch of kids who will
work hard and have a good
time. I think thls group has a
lot of heart.~
The hean of the squad is a
quartet of veterans who have
been with the program since its
inception.
Senior quarterbaclc-safety
Zach Friedrichs (6-foot-2, 185
pounds), senior fullback-line-
backer OJJf Swanson {6 ·2, 2.30).
senior tight end-defensive end·
Jinebacker Scott Oio (6-4. 205)
and junior receiver-cornerbad:
Eddie Huang (5-9. 145) are ex·
pected to carry a heavy load on
both sides of the ball. They att
aJso the team's captains.
Friedrichs. who spent his
first year in the program at re-
ceiver, came a long way at
quarterback last fall, according
to his coach.
"He is a pure athlete who has
really developed his arm,· said
Monarch, who also noted the
presence Of assistant Brad
Gossen, a fonner Washington
State quarterback. will greatly
enhance Friedrichs' develop-
ment as a decision maker.
Gossen shares offensive coor-
dinator duties with Monarch. as
they oversee the single-bad of'
aaid.
Swanson. Cho. Friedrichs
and Huang should also key the
defense, which will operate out
or a mult:ipJe fl\'e..~ tcheme
undet' the di.recdon or coordi-
nator Mike Man:betti .
The offensive and defensive
lines are the lead.Ing question mam. though Monarch sin-
gled out junior Paul Youssef
(6-3, 195) and sophomore Jim
O'Hare (6-1, 185) as the early
leaders ln the trenches.
MaroeJ Sohl a junior re-
turner, and sophomore new-
comer Brian Forest were other
linemen showing preseason
promise, Monan:h said.
Senior Erik Williams. a re·
ceiver and outside linebacker,
is also expected to be an im-
pact pl~r.
•My goal for our first few
games is to get all of our posi-
tions locked up. to become
crisp on offense and aggressive
on defense.• Monarch said.
Midway Baptist could be as
much of an unknown quantity
as Sage Hill, according to vet·
eran Patriots Coach Jerry Webb.
·1 have only two seniors.·
said Webb. who has recruited
32 of the school's 39 male stu:
dents (the school's enrollment
is 75. making it the smallest in
San Diego County. Webb said)
to his team.
The Patriots played eight·
man football last season (an
imposed change brought on by
placement in an eight-man
league). but return to the II·
man ranks this season as a
free-lance program.
·we had played seven years
of 11 ·man before last year.·
said Webb. who lost most of
last year's Citrus League run·
ners·up to graduation.
•stn~ netthet' team lcnows
what the other is going to do.
this game will be about adjust-
ments.· said Monarch. who,
like his players. Is eagerly an·
ticipating Friday's vamty de·
but.
·Tue kids are extremely ex·
cited, especially the senjorS, •
Monarch said. ·r told them the
tradition begins Friday. Now is
the time for them to have some
