AT ISSUE: Judges uphold Newport Beach law that requires beachgoers to leash their pets while strolling the sand. S ome people apparently still don\ "get it" ieprdiDg Che a-sa of the Corona del Mar residents who want to let their dog swim at Bag Corona beach without a leash ("Newport can tighten leash," Sept. 5). The problem is not with their FJden retdeYer, which is evidently a very nice and gies:rtle dog. The probllm is jf ~u allow one dog without a Jeuh. ~u have to allow all dogs. Not all dogs are nice or gentle. I penonally don't want to woay if an unrestrained dog 1s a loving pet or psychotic killer while I'm swimming or walking on the beach. And the famflles that crowd Big Corona don't need the potential threat of a dangerous dog attacking children or even of an overly friendly dog frightening a small child by accident. The dty has laws not to punish responsible pet ownen, but to protect the public from the dangers caused by a minority of inconsiderate, trresponsfble people. I find it the height of a,rrogance that these residents should appuently feel the law should not apply to them because they live beside the public's beach. And I wonder bcMr much tu money was squandered by their lepl appeals fordng the court to uphold the public's right to not be molested by unJeuhed dogs on the bead:i. Maybe the city could designate a location as a "dog beach," perhaps in Crystal Cove, where there would be minimal public effects. Big Corona, however, ls not the place for umestralned pet&. And that's my oplnioo. *>Kin' WAL.CHU Corona del Mar Yeah. I think it'a a sad day. Evidently the judges don't have • fl.EPHOTO /DM.Y Pl.OT Red Baron over1ooks Corona del Mar State Beach where his owners, Lynn and Paul Butterfield, were cited for letting him swim in the ocean unleashed. A panet of Superior Court judges recemty backed the city's law. dogs, and I realiz.e the beaches are crowded but we obey all the lease laws and letting your dog swim in the water certainly ls not going to hurt anybody. They can't bite anybody in the water and, if notblng ebe, they abould have some deslgo.ated areas. You know they've got dog pub and everyth1ng else. I hllve a hard dme with this. ROBERT HOFFMAN Newport Beach I applaud the judges. I believe dogs should be leashed at a'1 times in all places. I alto believe thetr owoen, aorry guardians. abould be leashed 81 well. Or perhape. better yet, laabed. WINTHROP HOPGOOD Newport Beach Of all the stupid things. Forcing ownen to hold the leash of a lwimmiDg dog ii dangeroul for the dog and dangerous for the owner. The whole purpose of a leuh Is so the dog won't pester other dogs or people. How is that possible If it ls swbnming1 Thb is totally ridiculous. JIMVMVORST IIvine As I read the article, the state of c.aufomia has a leash law to keep people from being bit. however. a dog that bas proven not be a threat to anyone else around Is already a safe dog. I disagree with the judges' ruling that a dog caµnot enjoy the beach. Huntington Beach has a dog beach. I think NewJ>ort 8eac.b should also have a dog beach and we ahould actually be rewarding residents who haw well-trained dogs by allowing tbmn to let those dogs out and mlllPd and. m.joy the amneth.inga and the ume luxurles u a child becaule they are ueated like a chlld. I ~ope that the city of Newport STUDENT OUTLOOK Beach will have a dog paik just like Huntington Beach has. They seem to be mlmlddng the growth Huntington Beach bas by having larger structures and encouraging people to come down and enJoy their place. so I would think that people that have dop that have shown they are~ IOdal The state's mandate -wbJch is a law that wu just adopted Ibis year -says a dog bas to be a soda1 animal. that thoee dop that are social animall wae actually rewarded by being~ to be a social animal and-»oYthe same benefits as everyone ~ Bspeci.ally if the animal ii being well-care for and being picked up after. We have a great deal of hatred in this country and I don't think that should be ~ded upon animals that UY' 8'lppoeedµ, be ~-cared for and under the cue of an individual. •tlLORElli Newport Beach Seniors prep for what they 're not q~ite ready for T be days of dtaJlll are upon the dua of 2003.
