underground for 1.100 feet.
Barry Olristensen. chairman of the

the single trnck inside the under-

COSTA MESA -Now that the route
for Centerline ha.'> been chosen. city
transportation staff members will work
with the Orange County Transportation
Authority engineers and South Coast
Metro business owner~ to make refine-
ment!>.
The goal is to alleviate as man'y of the
negauve effects as po<;sible.
On Jan. 12, the trnnsportation author·
ity board of dfrecror~ 1>elected a 9.3-mile
route that will stan at the Depot of Santa
Ana and end at John Wayne Airport with
a stop at Santa Ana College.
CenterLlne will enter Costa Me...a
During the public hearing last week,
before the route was chosen, two Issues
involving the Costa Mesa portion of the
route were brought up: the safety of the
underground portion along Avenue of
the Ans and the distance rider!> would
have to walk to get to South Coast Plaza.
Neither poses a significant enough
problem for the route to be reconsid·
ered. tran~portation authority spokes·
man Ted Nguyen said.
Safety is Job I
The underground portion of Center·
Line will be a single track. wrule the
rest of the light rail will be double
track.
"In Olicago. o ne of the operators
wasn't paying attention and a fataJ
head-on collision occurred,• Duis·
liansen said.
John Byrd. director of rail operations
and activation for the transportation
aulhority, said the single-track format
has a track record of safety.
"There have been no fatalities in
Sacramento or San Diego anributed to
single-track," Byrd said .
The way a single track b set up is de·
<,igned to prevent collisions, Ryrd said:
when the light rail engineer gets a red
light. the train is incapable of moving
forward, even if the driver inadvert·
ently tries to do so. It can't move again
until the light turn~ green, Byrd said.

Can't find fault in new laws yet
0 ur Jegi lators take a lot of
heat.
For the last few years
there has been angry talk of
gridlock in Sacramento, and yet I
notice that each year Lhere's a
long li 1 of new laws that take
effect, so Lhey are obviously
doing something.
I always read the list of new
laws to be sure Lhat I h ave not
inadvertently become a
lawbreaker, and I am relieved to
find out that If the state actually
runs out of money and can no
longer pay my pension, I have a
fallback. J can sell churros from

Apparently, before this year,
they couJd only be sold in stores.

Some laws have a more

no-fault divorce law. enacted in
1970. With its passage, the age of

This was so he could ask the
only question necessary to break

said the cla..s would load up on the bus

It goes without saying lha1 some

Smalley sald after they left 1he bus

saw two scrawny chickens wandering
around in the grass.
Hall turned sharply to Blue and asked.
"Is this your project, Jerry?"
While lhe class broke out in laughter,
Rlue cried out toward the house. "Hey,
Mom. didn't you feed the chickens this

Another laugh was drawn from
Smalley one day when he rcc.tlled how
he and lhe 1947-49 fullback Bob Berry
got in a naughty habit of sUpplng inside
halfback Don Knipp's locker and stealing
the sandwiches from his paper bag.
HBoy, Mother Knipp made the greatest
sandwiches, H Smalley said.
Knipp, a sharp detectiw, finally
caught the two players in the act before
• noon one day and confronted them
with the penalcy he was going to
impose.
He told them they could continue, but
It meant they would have to buy his
lunch each time they lifted his
sandwiches.
"Well. we did," Smalley said. "But it
got to lhe point where it was too
expensive so we had to stop.·

Against the Knights Saturday,

A great deal of determination
accounted for Newpon\
victories over the Kn1.-:Jlt~ last

went to game preparatmn and
the Sailors' commitment to
Barnett's training.
Entering Wedne~day's game
against Foothill, Hamett had hi\

Kraus and attacking 1n transition.
He put Ball on Kraus and had
other Sailors help her.
In addition. Newpon's
six-on-five offense included hard
ball fa1ces that seemed to throw
off the Knights.
J'aylor and Melissa Wheeler
'-t'ored a goal each in the fir~t
three-minute ovenime period.
"It was teamwork. definitely
teamwork that led tu the wm,''
laylor said. "We have just been
reading each other so well. We
just know each other from being

The Sailors appeared a!> sf they
were set 10 win in regulation

"Coach prepared us so well for
(that) game," Ball said
Wednesday. "We watched the
tapes and saw what we needed
to do to win and we worked on it
in practice."
The deck without the
bleachers is merely an
inconvenience. SliU. there are
'lome problems resulting. The
c,corer'.s table has become
crowded. The timekeepers and
M:oreboard operators, whom are
high school students, appeared
very nervous and excited during
the Newport-Foothill (,'lime. They
did not stop the clock after a goal
once and they also had a few
other mistakes dealing with the
shot dock. That had much to do
with the action, yet the
congestion around the table also
caused distraction.
The judge agreed with Mu111z
that ii sounded fairly quiet and
Muniz smiled before he got
another shock.
Dodge leaned forward and
said, "Now, Joe, pull the steel
wool out of the exhaust and let's
see how It sounds."
