Fear cannot dictate
attitudes toward wildlife
I sit holding my daughter. who
just turned 45 h ours old. As any new
parent, I have prepared for her
arrival with a naive confidence Lhat
was shaken, slightly. the first time I
held her. 1 began thinking about aU
of the hazards she will encounter -
for the rest of her life. I began
considering the consequences of a
Ufe spent with fear as Its focus: life
marred and mired by worry.
I am noc suggestJng a carelessly
cavalier approach to life. but I am
suggesting that we place our fears
where they belong -In proper
perspective. I don't see people
overly concerned about driving (or
riding in) cars on metropolitan
streets and freeways. I do not see
people particularly concerned about
working in factories in close
association with toxic materials. I
don't see concern for the levels of air
pollutants, wa1er quality, and soil
con taminants -at least, not an
appropriate level of concern.
In spite of the fact that domestic
canines lc.111 appro1dma1ely 200
people and inflict 200,000 wounds
that require medical attention In the
U.S. per year, I do not see a mad
rush to destroy our beloved pets.
Why is it we don't fear these
hazards with any real conviction?
Maybe it is because we love our pets
and our vehicles, and we require air,
water and land, in whatever
condition they are offered . Maybe
we recognize that although the risks
associated with these h azards are
real, they are also fairly low relative
to each Individual. You or I may
endure an entire life time without a
single dog bite, motor vehkle
accident or an illness due to
environmental pollution.
In the newspapers of late, there is
no shonage of people commenting
on human and cougar encounters.
Each person has their own views
and their own fears. I am concerned
that so many people are so afraid of
these relatively elusive felines and
that these disproportionately fearful
views will bring an Inglorious end to
California's largest wild cat.
And, for those of who have
anlmals (I.e. livestock) In open pens
and do noc expect losses: Get a clue.
That is analogous to chumming the
water and then complaining that
you attracted sharks; neither of
these examples exhibits anything
resembling common sense.
Are cougars capable of injuring or
killing a person? Absolutely. Are ydu
anywhere near as likely to be
attacked by a cougar than to be
killed in an automobile accident,
struck by lightning, afflicted by
cancer due to environmental
contaminants, car-jacked, etc?
Absolutely not. ln fact, not only are
the odds of being attacked by a
cougar in CaJlfornia relatively
negligible, but 80% of people
attac~ed by cougars survive.
Your chances pf actuaJly seeing a
cougar are less than the chance of
occurrence of the previously
mentioned hazards. That does not
mean that humans are not seen by
cougars. We are under the watchful
eyes of a cougar more often than we
can, or wish, to fathom. ln spite of
this, attacks are rare.
Why don't we accept the
negligible risk of a cougar auack.
with the same cavalier attitude that
we accept these other Infinitely
greater risks? There are many
reasons. But I would like to suggest
that those who favor cougar
eradication simply do not believe
that cougars favorably contribute to
the ecosystem. They seem to believe
that if cougars were extirpated,
there wouJd b e no adverse
consequences. And. apparently. they
hold no reverence for this cat that
many people believe fills a splrltuaJ
niche in human life.
Th be concerned about a cougar
attack with concurrent antipathy
towar.d panlcuJate·lnduced asthma
In children or public parks b eing

absurdity beyond reason . But It Is
understandable. It ls apparently

I believe humankind's philosophy
boils down to this: If It is dangerous
and has no apparen t utility to
humans. kill it. But, I know in my
heart and soul that this kind of
thinking and acting Is far more
harmful than what we are actuaJly
preventlng. If, In thJs current,
unprecedented period or species
extinctions, we exterminate cougars
from Southern Clllifornia, a new
haz.ard will replace the one we
destroyed. What is this hazard, you
ask? It is difficult to predict,
specifically. But if one looks closely
at similar extinctions In the past (1.e.
great whales, gray wolves, grizzly
bears), one will notice that na1urc
enjoys surprises.
Look at the majesty of a cougar
sometime -if you can find one -
and try not to be impressed. Nature
loves surprises. Let us not ruin the
surprise of nature that brought us
this fabulous feline because we are
too afraid to appreciate the fact that

irreplaceable awe. If. by that lime,
there are no more cougars in
Southern California, then we will
just have to move to a place where
the people haven't yet let fear rule
their actions. If no such place exists,
then we are all in serious trouble.

My well·dressed and witty colleague is

"Yes, I am, Sue," she said.
"What's the Year of the Monkey going to
bring?" I asked her.
"It's a year of creativity and fun," she
replied.
·Any downside to the Monkey?"
Pearl, in her wisdom, repUed, "We
prefer to emphasize the positive."
for me. emphasizing the positive is
always about food. My best thjnking
about the Year of the Mon.key brought me
to Mongolian Bar·B·Cue Pan Asia on 17th
Street in Costa Mesa.
lWenty years ago, writing for tl1e old
Newport Ensign, I wrote about the food al
MongoUan -as it is commonty known -
with a toddler trying 10 crawl all over my
strange new word-processing typewriter.
Who knew that years later, she'd e-maiJ
from UCLA to say, "I miss Mongolian!"
If you plan to eat at Mongolian, you get
there early. as it is. inexpensive, delicious
and therefore usually busy. You order your
shaved raw meat at the table and follow a
line of hungry patrons along a cafeteria
counter in the back of the restaurant.
adding vegetables, sauces and spice. l11en
your bowl is placed in order on top of the
counter and you watch the contents
being stir-fried on a big Oat gridd1e. Make
sure your bowl is in proper orc:ler. Bowl
cutting could be dangerous with this
crowd.
The old adage that watching your food
cook makes you hungrier is never truer
than In this hungry line. I often go in jui.t
after a hard workout at 24 Hour Fitness,
and I often fear I may starve before my
bowl gets thrown on the si2.Zling griddle.
There are some customs to know if
you've never been there. First of all, you
can spot a barbecue rookie by the way
they pile the food in their bowl.
Experienced patrons have mastered the
technique for squashing as much meat as
possible in their bowl and then piling
truck loads of sprouts. broccoli, carrots
and chives onto thi11 compacted brick of
meat.
The i.casoned professionals wilJ order,

they cast about for a plate or eXlra
porcelain teacup. Finally, with the
strength of a state governor or a trash
compacter, they pulverize and squash the
meat into a little brick.
111e result? More room for other
goocties. You can teU an expert when you
sidle aJong the counter. I have seen bowls
piled almost a foot high with vegetables.
The true masters have perfected the an of
balance, and their bowls arc cause for
envy among those of us who aren't strong
or coordinated enough to achieve these
masterpieces.
One note of caution from Sue Oark.
designated Worrier for the World: If you
use a dish or cup to fl atten your shaved
raw meat, please don't eat off of It later!
OK, enough from mom.
I prefer to skJp the oil and pour only
sauces on my bowl, as there Is plenty of •• ~
oil already on the griddle. Watching your
nasterpiece being cooked is almost
unbearable, but they finally hand you
your steaming bowl, and you race back to
the table. My custom Is to stuff the '
sesame buns with the cooked mixture . : ..
and eat the little sandwiches first. Then I
use chopsticlcs, whJch I have mastered, · ' ~
and devour the rest In a voracious
manner. I always plan to take some
home, but I never do.
When I went to the register to pay the
last dme I was there, I saw a young
big-haired woman In a hideous dress
smiling down at me from a yellowed

even the most zealous competitor's tolerance for
complacency.
Still, Mustangs Coach Dan Johnston said bore·

It was apparent during Monday's 2-0 league win

But Johnston continually provided strong verbal
