Newport-Mesa Unified School Dis-

four years ago for the high rate of suc·

The district's standards are closely
aligned with the stale standards. which
the exit exam is based on. The grade-
spedfic standards spell out what stu-

As of March, 2002, 86~ of district stu-

UCI management deans take over as a trio
The group is intent on

School of Management.
Deirdre Newman

The rebellion tbal toppled the former dean
of UC Irvine's Graduate School of Manage-
ment baa reauhed in a new management sys-
tem for the tchool -one interim dean and
two vice-<leens.
The trlumvtrate wW be overseeing the

bustneu school professor who stepped up to
du: chaDeoge of interim dean: to support her
in her efforts to ameliorate the probl~ that
precipitated the departure of David Blake.
who re5i{pled last Aprll amid scathing criti-
cism from some senior faculty; and because
the unlYeraity ls open to hiring a non-aca-
demic dean as a permanent replacement.
The two-tiered management structure
would also be necessary if a non-academic
dean was to lead the school, Pearce added.
So Pearce turned to two longtime col-
leagues as vice deans: Mary Gilly. who is in
charge of academic affairs, and Joanna Ho,
who will oversee the MBA program. While it is
unusual to have three women presiding over
a business schooL the trio prefers 10 focus on
their goals for the future rather than their
gender.
Finl and foremost is raising the morale
within the business school and its visibility to
the outside wortd. Many of Blake's critics had
complained that the marketing resources for
the school were misguided.
"We haven't done a good job of communi-
cating wftlt Our programs are," Pearce said.
Pearce. who has been at UCI since 1979.
said one of her lop priorities is to help the
business school adapl to the changing world
around it. One of her first steps was changing
the school's focus to downplay information
technology.
-Before. IT was something broad in the
dot-com days,· Pearce said. -Now IT is more
narrow. A lot of lrn companies collapsed un-
der their feet."
Pearce's background is in industrial organi-
zational psychology. which involves applying
psychology 10 organizations. Working at vari-
ous jobs throughout college, she said she was
cons1antly appalled by communication
breakdowns in the workplace.
One of the highlights of her academic ca-
reer was 1eaching one of the first MBA classes
behind the Iron Curtain. after communism
collapsed in Hungary.
"I -.aid I had to do this because this will
only happen once," Pearce said. "Commu-
nism will only fall once."
More recentJy. she has been involved in re-
search examining the role of social relation-
ships in buslnes.s.

Costa Mesa football may
waste little time cashing
in on the windfall of
opportunity that is the
Golden West League.
D wing the I 0-year period from
1992-2001, the C:Osta Mesa
High football team produced
eight winning seasons, seven
trips to the CIF Southern Section
playoffs, the lone outright league title in
the program's now 43-season history
('93} and a complete image
transformation from perennial doormat
to perennlal contender.
But the biggest victory the program
may have coUected during that time
took place in the Fountain Valley High
library, where those charged with
Orange C:Ounty releaguing plucked the
school from the Pacific C:Oast League
and placed it in the Golden West
League, for a four-year cyde beginning
this fall.
Perhaps Golden Opportunity League
would be a more accurate title for this
configuration of football also-rans,
whose win-I~

aforementioned
decade makes Mesa

(28-73-1),
FAULKNER Saddleback (38-63-1), Santa Ana
(16-85) and Westminster (42-62-1)
reveals a cumulative 191-415-5 mark
from 1992-2001. This translates to a
winning percentage of 31.7%, roughly
half the number posted by Mesa during
the same lime frame (63.8% with a
67-38 mark).
The six teams with which Costa Mesa
will compete, beginning Friday when
the Mustan~ kick off their first Golden
West League campaign against Ocean
Vie:w at Westminster High, have posted
just 11 winning seasons in those 10
years, while also coUectively recording
eight winless campaigns, seven with
just one win and nine more with just
two.
Only Orange, co-champion of the
Century League in 1992, and
Westminsler, which claimed the Golden
West crown last season in more than a
mild surprise, have topped their
leagues during that 10-year ~riod.
