The spirit of lnternaUonal
goodwill permeated the
Corona del Mar High
School campus Thursday
as a group of Japanese stu-
dents and administrators
visited the school.
The visit capped off an
annual exchange program
that sends four Corona del
Mar students to Okasaki -
one of Newport Beach's
sister cities -every sum-
mer. In both countries.
students stay with host
fonilies.
The goal or the program
is for studenrs to experi-
ence another culture first·
hand.
·ey having our children
experience a different cul-
ture, especially American,
we want our children to
have the experience as a
catalyst to broaden their
view toward the world,"
said Hiroshi Sawa, a junior
high school principal and
Okasak.i Sister C11y repre·
sentative, through transla·
tor Kumiko Broche. • 1r you

culture.·
The exchange program
has been trading srudenrs
across the Pacific for abour
20 years, exemplifying
how strong the sister city
relatioru.hap is, said Juslin
Myers, 19, a Corona del
Mar graduate who partici-
pated in rhe program in
1997 and is now on the
board of directors for the
Sister Cities Assn.
Every year, four Corona
del Mar students who have
just finished eighth grade
are selected by application
to visit Okasakl In July.
They stay with host fami·
lies. Their families act as
hosts when their Japanese
counterparts visit New·
port Beach.
KeUy Archibald, 14.
stayed with Ayaka Ina's
family. She said rhe most
inreresu.g part was just
watching the family go
through their normal daily
routine, such as going to
the supermarket.
The Japanese studenu.
arrived early this week for
their American experi-
ence.
Kelly has a slew of act iv·
ities lined up for Ayalca. in-
cluding going to Dis ney:
land, horseback riding,
shopping -"so I can get
her some American

her grandparents in 1..alce

While dining o n deh
sandwiches and potato
salad ar Corona del Mar.
Ayaka said one of the ma·
jor differences between
school~ in the two coun·
tries is that in Japan the
reachers -rather than the
srudents -change class·
rooms. She said one of her
best expenences so far
was meeting a friendly
student on campus.

COSTA MESA -A rush of adrenaline
in the first half combined with a swann-
ing defense in the second half created the
ideal combination for Newport Harbor
High's field hockey team to continue their
undefeated ways.
And the Sailors (7-0-2, 4-0-1 in the
Sunset League) dJd so in fashion, shut-
ting out visiting Fountain Valley, 4-0, for
their seventh shutout of the teUOn
lbunday at Harper Community Center.
The Sailors used four different goal
scorers while only allowing one Baron
shot.
"In the fiM half we gsve great support
and pushed the ball up front." said New-
port Harbor Coach Sharon Wolfe. "We
were a little slugiah the second half.
They neec;t to be more patient and need
to ra.ct quicker once a shot la passed out.
But we deftnltely worbd well covering
and hoY'er1ng around the ball in the eec-
ond half.•
Virtually every time a Fountain Valley
forward croued mldfleld, a Newport de-
fender darted to lteal the ball or deter the
opponent away from the ball

COSfA M&5A -CounciJ members
voted narrowly Friday morning to im-
mediately reinstate City Atty. Jerry
Scheer. who had been placed on paid
admJ.rustrative leave three weeks ago
while the councO conducted a more
thorough employee evaluation.
It is unclear whether their action
will mark an end to the city's recent
legal quandary.
The council's closed vote caps off a
tumultuous four weeks for the city's
legal department, during which the
council voted to halt all busines.s with
an outside legal firm, audit the City
Attorney's Office, place its top cwo al·
tomeys on paid administrative leave,
set up a subcomminee to further re-
view their performance, reinstate one
