PET OF THE WEEK
Sebastian
Sebastian, a 5-year-old cat
named after the crab in the
Disney movie "The Uttle
Menn aid." is affectionate and
prefers being the onJy man of
the house. He enjoys cuddling
up and sleeping in bed and likes
following his owner around the
house.
Although Sebastian's owner
will no longer be able to care for
him since her soon-to-be
husband has acute cat allergies,
the Community Animal Network
is hopeful they will find a new
owner.
"Our foster families are truly
giving to the community by
being involved," said DiAnna
Pfaff-Martin, founder of the
ol'g31lization. "Many have used
fostering animals as a bar
mitzvah project or to get
community service hours in
high school, and some families
use the fostering program to
convince dad that they can be
responsible enough to have a
pet of their own.·
ln appreciation of those
persons who act as foster
families for needy animals, the
organization ls ordering new
shirts to sen. with all the
proceeds going to the network.
The shins will be red with yeUow
letters across the back that read,
"Ufesaver."
"Fostering animals in your
borne that wouJd otherwise lose
their lives without your
intervention is a most incredible
feeling to be a part of,"
Pfaff-Martin said. "Now our
shirts will teU it all."

Where's the beef-er,
traffic?
We attended a garden party
this past weekend and someone
raised the question of the
validity of the traffic problem
that the Greenlighters are
constantly carping about.
Several were of the opinion that
It Is a wfake problem -designed
to aid them In their effort to take
control of the City Councll next
month.
My response was that indeed
there is one traffic congestion
problem here on the peninsula.
It essentially is brought to us by
none other than the
self-proclaimed WFather of
Greenlight," Allen Beek, whose
brother, Seymour, runs the
Balboa Island Ferry. Throughout
the year, day and night,
customers are lined up on both
landings blocking traffic and
pumping exhaust fumes into our
homes and businesses while the
ferries move back and forth
across the bay belching black
diesel smoke into the air. We
have watched this problem
steadily increase for almost 25
years. Why would we now want
to vote for a man who gives us
traffic congestion and pollution,
and happily takes our money,
bu1 gives us no hope for
improvement or even a receipt?

THE RACE FOR THE NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Tom Egan: Investing in matters of trust
Deirdre Newman
Daily Pilot
Tom Egan said his analytical back-
ground and team-building skills will
serve him well as a school board trustee.
ln his extensive experience worlcing
as an engineer, Egan has had to manage
diverse projects and deaJ with a wide
range of personalities.
"I have quire a reputation worlcing as
a bridge builder," Egan said. "[In one
consulting job], there were two teams
that didn't like each other, but I was
trusted by both sides and wasn't even an
employee."
As a 16-year Costa Mesa resident,
Egan has aJso immersed himself m a
wide range of community activities. in-
cluding the library foundation and the
community redevelopment action com-
mit1ee.
He took a hands-on approach to con-
tributing to the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District, installing an interactive
sundial on the playground of Killy-
brooke Elementary School to help stu-
dents improve their understanding of
numbers.
Egan originally considered running
for Costa Mesa City Council but didn't
think he could win. So at the urging of
friends. he decided to run for the school
board.
"It's more of an inteUecruaJ position
than City Council, so I feel quite com-
fortable." Egan said.
Egan said his perspective on educa-
tion has been honed since he spent a lot
of time m school. racking up a bach-
elor's and two master's degrees as weU
as a certificate of urban planning from
UCL
There are two underlying issues that
the district needs to focus on -trust
and resources, Egan said.
While trust has been eroded in most
areas of government, it is an especially
important issue for parents, Egan said.
"I don't like the absence of trust we
have." Egan said. "It's lllce driving with
the brakes on. You can get somewhere,
but it's very inefficient."
Dealing with a limited budget also
puts more emphasis on stretching re

sources. Egan said. He supports increas-
ing technology in the classroom, to
make teachers more productive, and
continuing the district's efforts to create
partnerships with business and aca-
demic entities.
Egan said focusing on critical think-
ing skills in the classroom is also im-
perative.
"It's clear to me that this is vital,"
Egan said. *Here we are in the informa-
tion age in the globaJ economy and a
person really needs a lot of savvy. It's a
special kind of savvy."
Egan would like to see the district not
teach with only the numerous standard-
ized tests in mind. One way to avoid
that is to align the curriculum with the

He also doesn't buy into the notion
that you get quality by testing. He be-
lieves you should build quality into in-

"I'd like to see everything the d istrict

everyone knows how to dress. Yes,
something should be spelled out, but
you can't lay down rules if people don't
buy into it. You need to get all the
stakeholders to buy into the idea to
dress appropriately. Other students

Gary Monahan: Fighting for the live-and-let-live attitude
GARY MONAHAN ON:
• INTRUSIVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Monahan said he believes in
•stemming the tide of intrusive
government and bureaucracy.'.' Costa
Mesa has many dlaracteristics,
personalities. interests and hobbies,
Monahan said. tt is not a planned
community and the residents need to be
able to fulfill their life's needs and
dreams without local government
standing in the way.
• FlSCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Monahan said he believes in k<!eping
tight reigns on the city's budget by
focusing on safety, emergency services.
roadways and parks. The sitting
councilman fought to cut inflated
programs during budget deliberations
in June because the city could not
longer afford to increase spending, with
California legislators hovering over local
funds like vultures.
-nie state is going to nail us to solve
their budget problems and we need to
be prepared:' Monahan said.
• llETTER PARKS
Monahan said he would like to see
more residents enjoying their local
parts and plans to seek out vacant land

various recreational needs in the city. He

Gary Monahan never gets a break
from his involvement with the city.
As a local business owner, he deaJs
with City Hall for various licenses and
regulations. As a homeowner and fa.
ther of a growing family. he will soon
be going through the laborious process
of remodeling his home.
And every other Monday the incum-
bent councilman is on the dais at City
Hall making the decisions that affect
his follow entrepreneurs, ho meowners
and neighbors.
"I deaJ with bureaucracy at every
level possible, so it is really personal to
me to make sure that we treat people
with respect and work for them, not
against them," Monahan said.
Early In the campaign season,
Monahan considered hanging up his
political hat but decided against it be-
cause or his desire to return Costa
Mesa to the friendly, Uve-and let-live
environment it ls known for.
The city has gotten away from what
makes it Costa Mesa, thanks to the
large push from a vocal minority that
wants to turn it into a planned com-
munity. Monahan said.
•Pretty planning documents don't fit
Costa Mesa, and they squeeze too
many of our longtime citizens and new
families right out of the ability to live
here/ he said.
City Hall needs to recogn.lu that,
aside from unparalleled retailers such
as South Coast Plaz.a, amalJ business
and Industrial companies are the back-
bone of the city, Monahan aatd. The
council needs to work with local entre-
preoeun to help them aotve their
probleou and accompll.sh their goals
Instead of regulating them right out of

conquer
Sailors, Sea Kings hope to
take contrary road to
success in their respective
league football races.
I f the high school football teams
from Newport Harbor and
Corona del Mar are to conquer
the competition in the Sea View and
Pacific Coast leagues, respectively,
both wiU do so bucking their league's
statistical trend.
Newport I larbor. which wiU need
to knock off league favorite FoothiU
to defend its Sea View crown, is one
of only rwo Sea View representatives
with more passing yards than
rushing yards thus far.
The Sailors have accumulated
52.3% of their 1,584
......------. yards via the pass,
while the other five
teams in the league
have produced
56.2% of their yards
on the ground.
Only Foothill,
which has thrown
for 68.2% of its
1,742 yards, has
thrown for more BARRY yards than it has
FAULKNER run for among
I !arbor's Sea View
rivals.
In the PCL, which could be called
the Pass Completion League this fall,
CdM's five league opponents have
thrown for nearly 62% of their
offensive yards, while the Sea Kings
have gained nearly 70% of their 1,059
yards on the ground.
Only Laguna Beach, coached by
former CdM head man Dave
Holland, joins the Sea Kings as PCL
teams that have rushed for more
than they have passed and the
Artists' margin is nearly 50-50.
As both leagues open play this
week, here's a handicap.
In the Sea View League, FoothUl,
formerly in the Century League. is
the clear favorite, though Newport
Harbor wiJJ have four more weeks of
improvement, before it visits the
Knights in the Nov. 14 regular-season
finale at Tustin 1 ligh.
Foothill ( 4 -I), ranked No. 3 in CIF
Southern Section Division VI and No.
8 in Orange County, has outscored
its opponents, 157-82, this fall and
it's only loss was last week's 30-20
setback to San Oemente (3·2 and
ranked No. 6 in the county).
Foothill quarterback Don Poole
.has thrown for 1.139 yards and I 0
touchdowns, while running back
Mike Lid has produced 461 rushing
yards and hu scored eight TDs in
four games.
The Knights are 14-3 under
second-year coach Doug Case, who
coached previously at Rancho
Alamitos.
Laguna Hills (3·2) is averaging a
Jeague-hJgh 34.6 points per game
and Coach Bruce Ingalls welcomed
back more than a dozen starters
from last year's CIF Division VI
~mifinallst. Ulce Newport Harbor,

COSTA MESA -This game
had it all: A pivotal match in the
Golden West League standings. a
clash of crosmown rivals. four
ties, three lead changes, and a
last-second shot anempt that would
have sent the game into overtime.
In the end. the F.stancia High f.agles cele-
brated a 9-8 victory over their rival, visiting Costa
Mesa. Tuesday. when F.stancia senior Jess HeU·
mich scored the decisive goaJ with 1:30 left.
Later, with two seconds remaining. Hellmich
blocked c.osta Mesa's final shot anempt at send-
ing the game into overtime.
"We were going in with the mentality that we
had to win and we wouldn't accept anything
else," Hellmich said. "lf we lost this game our
season was pretty much over. I was totally ex-
cited we won. We only have two league games
left and we have to win the next two in order to
make the playoffs."
The Mustangs (6-8, 1-2 in league) overcame
an 8-5 deficit in the fourth quarter. Mesa went
on a 3-0 run in 3:29, led by sophomore Adam
Douglas, who scored the three goals. After Mesa
junior Brian Tipton stole an Estancia pass at·
tempt, Douglass went down to set and drew an
ejection. He then took an entry pass from Tipton
and tied the score, 8-8, with 2:24 remaining.
In the closing moments. the teams traded
missed shots. But with 1:20 remaining f.sUoda
junior Paul Collier found his teammate. Hdl-
mich, on the wing. and Hellmich spun away
from his defender and finished his clear look to
the cage.
The excitement continued when Collier re-
corded a steal with 1 :16 left, but 25 seconds later,
F.stancia was called for an offensive fouJ (push·
off). Costa Mesa called another timeout and set
up a play, which ended up being a shot from
about six meters out by Douglass. The shot went
through the hands of F.stancia junior goalie Nate
Marsteller, but the goalie grabbed the ball before
it Ooated into the cage, with 30 seconds left.
All the P.agles (4-8, 2-2) had to do was run out
the cloclc. but they actually fired off a shot that
went over the cage with two seconds left. setting
up the dramatics ended by Hellmich.
Senior Frank Gamboa led the Eagles with four
goals. and he. along with Hellmich, keyed Estan-
da's big third quarter when the F.agles outscored
the Mustangs. 5-1. At halftime, F.stancia Coach
John Carpenter told his players to increase their
intensity and the P.agles responded.
F.standa scored four unanswered goals In a
1:47 span. The highlight of the run came with
2:46 left in the third quarter, when junior An·
thony Herman recorded a steal and quickly
started a fast break.. He passed it to Estancia jun·
ior John Bates, who threw it forward to Collier,
who caught it at half-tank and In one motion
passed to Gamboa. who scored the goal for a &4
lead.
About 30 seconds later, Gamboa recorded a
steal that ended a Costa Mesa six-on-five situa-
tion, and Gamboa went out on the break and
finished it off with a lob shot for what was
thought to be a commanding 7-4 lead.

still be searching for their defin-

that moment did not come.
However, Newport will assuredly
have Its opportunity in the up-

The Sailors (13-3, I -I in
league), ranked No. I in CIF

15-8, 15-13 victory over the
Hawks. Sailors Coach Dan Glenn
said he was glad to see his play-
ers come back in a third game
that saw them down. 13-6. It was
also imponant for Newport to
prepare for the Santa Barbara

"We're just trying to get belier
right now," said Glenn, whose
squad lost its Sea View League
opener in five games to visiting
Aliso Niguel last weeL "We have
lo pick it up because we're going
to play some real good teams."
Newport showed moments or
brilliance throughout the first
two games Tuesday. with Kmtin
McOune, the Pepperdine-bound
senior, leading the way. McOune
recorded a match high 25 k.ills.
while junior Kellie King distrib-

his squad faltered because of

game.
·Alyson do~ aJJ of the little

Contrary to the days

The Sailors' kickoff Matt Encinias coverage team showed both Fernando Castorena Mike Toole
