THE BUSINESS OF LANGUAGE
A June-ism

A Los Angeles

Press releases

these two people (no doubt
George W. Bush and Rush
Umbaugh) must not get
much sleep.
• Everything I know about
English grammar and usage
I learned from books and
people with impressive
expertise. Note that I didn't
say. ·1 learned from both
books and people,· because,
I'm proud to announce, I've
cracked open at least three
books on the subject.
This particular gripe with
the word "both" Is. as far a I
can tell, a June original.
There's no mention of this
problem in the Oticago
Manual of Style. No mention
in the Associated Press Style
guide (yes, I know that's an
incomplete sentence). None
in "The Elements of Style."
In the interest of
thoroughness, however, I
have now cracked open a
fourth book. "Woe.king With
Words: A Concise Handbook
for Media Writers and
Editors" by Brian S. Brooks
and James L Pinson, which
touches on the subject, but
not in the special June way.
Now. cracking open two
more, I can't find any other
sources to point to this
particular problem with the
word "both."
Here's what "Working
With Words" says.
"The adjectives 'both' and
'differen t' often add nothing.
What's the difference
between 'both John and BiU'
and 'John and Bill'? Between
'three different views' and
'three views'?" {Yes. I'm sure
they know the latter Is an
incomplete sentence.)
Touche. Messrs. Brooks
and Pinson. but you
overlooked what, to me, is
the single most troubling
thing about the word
"both.·
If you were talking not of
John and Bill but of many
people with those first
names, Johns and Bills. by
adding "both" in front you·re
creating uncertainty as to
what the word •both"
modifies.
trailblazing
grammar authority too
mighty to reckon with, is a
rule I just made up:
'Nhenever the adjective
"both" comes before two
nouns separated by "and,·
and whenever the first noun
is plural, ditch the word
both. In fact, as Brooks and
Pinson have sald, whenever
you're considering using the
word "both" as an adjective,
stop and ask yourself
whether the sentence would
lose anything if you took it
out In shon , question every
"both."
Of course, lots of times
"both" is just groovy.
"USC which lost both
staning cornerbacks from
last season. did not sign a
cornerback or a running
back.· In this example fro m
a recent Times article,
"both" actually adds
information. II teUs you the
exact number of
comerbacks lost: two.
Then there are the
sometimes questionable.
sometimes defensible uses
of "both," like this from a
press release from the
Institute for Systems Biology:
" ... the ISR has helped
define both the state-of-the
a n as well as the global
direction in this field ."
This means, "The ISB has
helped define
state-of-the-art and global
direction in this field." But
do you gain anything by
using the "both ... as well
as" c;onstruction? I suspect a
lot of grammar experts
would say no. that these
words are just hot air. But
sometimes they sure do
seem to give a little extra
emphasis. And because the
excerpl above was In a
quote. I'd rule that the
spealcer got the intended
mileage out of these extra
words.
Bo1h my adoring fans and
my har h critks should
agree.

down the street,
most people
wouldn't recognize him as
representative of the people.
He hasn"t run for office, but
friends considered him the
"mayor of the Quonset huts" on
West 17th Street. where he ran a
welding shop for 24 years. He
closed it Jan. 30.
Hildebrand operated a
fabri cation and repair weldJng
shop. doing work for adhesive
maker J.D. Uncoln Inc. and
community members who
needed things repaired. He
closed his shop and retired
because of health concerns.
"lt"s taken the heart out of this
place for awhile,• said Nancy
Stem, who runs a nearby an and
gift shop. ··vou're always used to
seeing him over there telling
jokes, malcing up stories."
Stem and other business
owners in the Quonset huts,
many of whom are craftspeople
or anists, have formed a friendly,
eclectic community, and
Hildebrand was a big part of
that.
"It's quJte a littJe family
around here," Stem said.
Originally from Pennsylvania,
Hildebrand came west to anend
college at CaJ State Fullerton. He
had planned to teach history but
had a change of heart before he
entered the job market, he said.
"I had a job offer, and I didn't
like the way the !education)
system was going, so I turned
around and went back to Orange
Coast College and studied
welding." he said.
After getting his start at a
welding shop that has since
closed down, Hildebrand
opened hJs own shop at the
Quonset huts.
"I never advertised all those
years," he said. "It was all word
of mouth." .
As he befriended other
business owners, Hildebrand's
shop became the social hub at
the huts -perhaps because of
the coffee he made.
"I served the best coffee in
town," he said.

The note read simply: "From

Daily Pilot
Round 5 for trailer park law draft
The chairman says
he's hopeful the
Planning
Commission will get
a version approved.
Deirdre Newmen
Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -It's an issue
so complex that the Planning
Commission has continued it
four times.
On Monday, the commission
w11J again con Ider a draft ver-
sion of a law to expand the city"s
procedures for dealing with mo-
bile hof!le park closures and
conversions to other uses.
"I think we h<tve all the infor-
mation we need, and rm hope-
ful. if not confident, we can !>end
somelhing on to lhe <:Icy Coun-
cil," Otairman Bruce Garlich
said. "I'm jus t not sure what It
will be. There are lot of parts and
a lot of alternative language."
The Cily Council supported
revamping lhe city's procedures
on lhe conversion of mobiJe
home parks after residents of lhe
El Nido and Snug I larbor Lra.iler
parks complained that they
wercn"t being offered fair com-
pensation for ha~g to leave lhe
parks, which are being d osed.
The citycannot deny an appli-
cation for a permit to convert a
mobile home park or prevent a
property owner from closing a
rnubile home park. All it is re-
quired to do now is review a re-
port, required hy the state, ana-
lyzing the effects of the
conversion or clo~ure on the
residents It may lhl•11 impose
measures lhat lhe park owner
must take to lessen negative ef-
fects without exceeding the rea-
sonable co ts of relocation.
In preparing the proposed law,
planners reviewed the orclinan-
ces of cities such as Laguna
Beach and Huntington Beach. as
well as the Golden State Manu-
factured Home Owners League.
The proposed law defines
terms such as "closure of a park"
and ·conversion of a park." II re-
quires that a park owner file a re-
location report, and it speclfies
what must be in the report.
The issue was last continued
on Jan. 12. when the commission
asked fo r more information and
refinements. including clarifying
what the ciry can do 10 compcn·
sate mobile home owners for re·
loca1ion
Planning staff members in-
eluded alternative language lhat
identifies the time frame In
which mobile home owners,
whose homes can't be relocated,
have to chose a replacement lot.
If they reject the replacement lot,
then the park owner is llmired in
what he has to do to compensate
lhem.
·Language was also added that
would allow the commi!>Sion to
consider lhe on-site and uff-site
fair market value in deti:rminlng
lhe appropriate payment to
owners of moblle homes that
can"t be relocate<l.
Garlich said the commission
may have to go through tht: draft
ordinance In the sam e wcty lhat
the City Council handle the
consent calendar. seeing if lhere
are <my pans of ii thal commis-
sion members wan1 to dl'liberalt'
individually.
